Most people didn't like Cole's look/voice.
A lot of people were just fine with Cole's look/voice. They didn't feel like piping up about it because there was no reason to do so - the character was fine for them.

Some of us don't believe in a single iconic male protagonist archetype.
Actually, no, he was right. According to SuckerPunch a LOT of people hated his look and voice. That's why they wanted to change it. The voice especially.

Maybe for the whole duration of last game, Cole was feeling the affects of the blast, you know face was screwed up voice was raspy from stuff (ash?) getting in there, then in this game (presumably atleast one year later) he's much better, voice is back to normal, face doesn't look as bad. Also I think they showed a comic book cutscene of him before the blast looking messed up, but that's because the person who made that comic book only knew the Cole as seen on the streets after the blast.:D

He had more hair in the comic scenes then he did in-game >_< lol. Though, I think I see your point. That is a VERY good point of view of how it may be. I will keep my mentality on that and try to drop the hatred :D

Play Condemned: Criminal Origins.

Then play Condemned 2: Bloodshot.

See who you can identify before the game introduces them.
ninja'ed, I was thinking the same thing

I thought Cole's character design/voice acting was totally at odds with the story they were trying to tell about him. Everyone referred to him as a "kid," yet the guy looked and sounded like a grizzled Vietnam vet. Also, he looked exactly like EVERY OTHER PROTAGONIST in a major recent release. I'm so very, very tired of the shaved head/stubbly beard/gravelly voice thing... I'll take anything else.

I immediately responded more positively to the redesign, and I can't wait to play the new one, which I hope alleviates a lot of the tedium of the original.

And, equally according to SuckerPunch, Cole's new look isn't final. There's no reason for them to even mention such a thing unless there's a sizable backlash against the change - which there has been. It might be enough to influence a major character redesign, which is pretty much unprecedented.

So, no, it's not at all cut-and-dry. A bunch of people hated old Cole. A bunch of people hate new Cole. That's where we stand.

Ah, you have a point there. I give you the win xD lol. I really hope they make this new game more amazing then the first, which was spectacular. And hopefully a third game even, but I am speaking far ahead of our time.

All I dislike is the character.

But fuck, everything else looks amazing.
It's like... you and I were meant to be together... uh, in a totally non-romantic way, of course! That's definitely what I meant!

In all seriousness though, it looks like they've improved gameplay tenfold, and kept the basic feel and story of the original. The only problem I have with the game really is the new Cole: the old one wasn't perfect, but this type of change just seems much too drastic (and they've turned him into such a douche!).

Alright, I've just seen the trailer, and I have concluded that THAT IS NOT COLE. I don't care what they say, it's a completely different person. Even if he does have the same personality, he's so unlike the first game's Cole that it's not even funny.

Honestly, Infamous 1 is one of the 5 games that are PS3 exclusive that I actually enjoyed. And seeing the changes done to the character... it's gonna ruin it a bit for me, I'm not going to lie. It's still going to be awesome I'm sure, but... it's just not Cole.

The only thing I don't really like about Infamous 2 is Cole's redesign. I really liked the gravelly voiced Cole of the first game. He was able to be badass even when being a good guy who was consistently dealt shitty hands. That's really difficult to do, usually in that circumstance the good guys just baaawww about everything, but Cole just shrugged it off and kept being badass.

It should be an awesome game regardless, but I'd really enjoy an alternate costume/appearance that more closely resembles the old Cole's aesthetic. I'd also appreciate it if the voice actor at least tries to mimic some of old Cole's dry, gritty delivery from time to time. Tone it down for all the Uncharted fanboys if you have to, but don't change him completely!

Just had a thought: maybe this is some kind of alternate timeline Cole created by Kessler's interference with the space/time continuum. Yeah.

I too miss the Cole of old. Infamous was a great game. Then they had to make him generic action hero #3000000000000020101...

Hey, top of a page? That hasn't happened in a while!

inFamous is definitely one of my favourite PS3 games, and I'm pretty excited for the second. As with others here, I'm a little upset about the character design change. Its not huge, but Cole is this huge character now that's reasonably recognizeable, and I liked him that way. I suppose we'll see when inFamous 2 comes out how much of that person Cole still embodies,, :/

still excited for infamous 2 though

He does try. If you listen to his voice in the Trailer he tries pretty hard to make it sound gravelly and closer to old Cole.

Or, like the one guy earlier in this topic said, it could be that his voice and face and hair got burnt and ruined curing the explosion. The smoke clodding his vocals. And now it is like a year or two later and it could be healed a bit, and maybe this is his original voice.

I can accept the fact that Cole grew hair and got tattoos, but the voice actor thing bugs me as well as changing his face.

They didn't really change his face much. It is the same character model, they just built more on it. My only thing is that he looks younger. It could just be that THIS time he is actually smiling for once lol. It looks closer to his comic book cutscene look.
