Ign - 9.2
Gamspot - 9
Anything over an 8 imo is a hit, except for some but imo, it's more fun than GTA4 and I've only played the demo too and I have the full GTA4 game and beaten it.
If you look at gamespot and ign's reviews you need help. seriously.
They rated The Last Remnant over 8.0. Rent it and try to play for more than an hour. I dare you. It's that bad. It's not just bad as a game, it's even bad as a JRPG. And that says something.
If you only look at one or two websites for reviews of games, you need help. It pains me to see someone go "IGN/Gamespot/whatever are horrible reviews, why listen to them?" when there's really no poitn in not at least looking at their reception.
What is so hard about conjuring up a
general consensus of a game? Seriously, look at Metacritic of Gamerankings and look at the average of all the websites reviews together and you get a good idea as to how the game fares. It's not that hard.
First off, the Last Remnant was blatantly terrible. The story line made no sense, the combat system is pretty transparently them wanting to make a combat system where you control groups of people instead of individuals, but then they decided it took too long to give orders to that many individual units, so they scrapped the individual unit control idea, reduced your customization ability on your characters, and what you end up with is you only get to give them "general guidance" on what to do instead of specific orders, which makes the game less interactive.
Secondly, commercial gaming magazines with online reviews in general, and IGN and GameSpot specifically, have no reason to NOT give good reviews to sub-par games, like The Last Remnant. Those game developers pay them for ad space, and as long as people keep reading good reviews, they're going to continue to buy those games, and the game developers will in turn have more money to dump into advertising on those websites. So yes, reading those reviews skews your perception of what's quality and what's shit.

First of all, isn't an 8 lower than a 9? I think so. Also most of the games that are around 7-8s are usually iffy and I said "over an 8". Some even like The Last Remnant. But for the most part, their ratings are accurate.
Yes, 8 is lower than 9. But, as I've quoted you, and will requote you "Anything over an 8 imo is a hit". 8.0 isn't "over" an 8, but it is in fact an 8, and thus should be at the very least borderline "hit", which it obviously is not. It's crap. Little to no customization. The cutscenes are horrid. The voice acting is horrid. You have absolutely no desire to find this kid's parents or save his sister because you have no story-based attachment to them, yet this king of the city dude and his 4 generals are all about it diverting massive amounts of time, energy, and resources to helping you out. Farming out instances of areas for rare monsters sucks. The combat is boring. So, bad gameplay and gameplay mechanics, worse graphics than on PS2 (read: FFIX), poorly written storyline, cutscenes, and voice acting = bad game. It's not iffy, it's not borderline, it's bad. I'm sorry you're so wrong.
