Hilarious how many people in this thread have been suckered into the rumours surrounding the band. It also sucks ass that the singer left, because I liked him :)

Non-metal fans look down on it because it's metal.

Power metal fans look down on it because it's not Blind Guardian or Sonata Arctica or whatever.

I dunno.
This is probably the best description of it. I know that's why I don't like them, lol. Seriously, everyone has put forward the reasons why. Me, I don't much care for them, because their sound is safe and uninspired, a band which exists solely on the talent of their guitarists as a selling point, and they are a very commercially accessable metal band. All these factors combine to make the metal community as a whole not give a damn about them.

Have to admit, I like Dragonforce, particularly for their epic nonsense fantasy lyrics.

They're bad reputation comes from their awful live performances in the past, which was the result of a lousy sound tech and short rehearsal time.

The other reason is the "repetitiveness" of their songs, which I frankly don't see. I love all their songs.

They are bland and tasteless, mainly because the whole band revolves around how fast they can play. This sort of thing appeals to some people, mainly teenagers who say "epic" a lot. The band is formed on a gimmick, not how well they play, not how good their songs are, and not how good their shows are. People listen to this band because "zomg they play so fast!" which does not in any way appeal to me at all.

I'm sure there are bands out there that can play just as fast, but actually have some depth to their songs.
That's very prejudice of the band and the fans. Or to phrase it even better...

The problem with Dragon Force is not that they dont know how to play, it's what they play!

....And the lyrics are corny

Seen them at a terrible show. Whatever the excuses that's enough to turn me off. They also suffer from being well know which unless you've been around 20-40 years (eg. Mettalica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest ect..) will make you a laughing stock in some metal communities.

Like others have said, they're horrible live and all their music is done up in the studio. Plus, they got the majority of their fame from being in Guitar Hero, which was horrid anyway as the game has you playing Dragon Force keyboard solos with a guitar.

Add one to the count. I heard at most 3 songs from them. The ones I remember were the famous "Through Fire and Flame" "new world " something something, they sound almost exactly the same in terms of guitar. Quite generic and without any "gripping" touch.

Dunno why they are so hated and trashtalked tbh so.. why?
Because they're very show-offy when there's not much reason to be. Don't get me wrong- Herman Li and Sam Totman are good, but what they don't seem to understand is that playing speed does not equal playing skill. Personally, I'd say that Stevie Ray Vaughan was better than either of them, and he NEVER played that fast, because his skill was so blatantly obvious in his flawless rhythm control. One can liken rhythm to driving a car: the faster you go, the harder it is to control and the more disastrous the results are if you mess up.
Am I making any sense?

Guitarists like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai have been playing for, what, 35-40 years, and their 'tires'-so to speak- stick to the pavement like Velcro. I have all the Dragonforce albums, and there are several occasions in which the whole band almost loses the rhythm entirely. There's more, though: Herman and Sam went public in '99, so they don't have as much polish as Slash, Buckethead, Zakk Wylde, or any of the other 'guitar greats'. You know the screechy noises you hear in Dragonforce songs? Those are caused by moving up and down the fretboard too rapidly, and it's something you don't hear when you listen to John Petrucci, even though he solos even faster. That's because Petrucci changes strings instead of going up and down. It's just something you learn from experience.

As to why the rest of the band is trash-talked...
Their singer has a very impressive high tenor, but he lacks dynamics, and frankly, I find him to be a tad annoying. Their drummer suffers from a lack of experience (listen to Mike Portnoy and compare- that guy is GOOD). The keyboard player is, well, not great, but he's gotten a lot better. I have no real criticism for the bass and rhythm guitarist- he does his job quite well.

Overall, I see a lot of potential in Dragonforce, and I hope they ditch all the extra studio doctoring, because they won't live up to that potential if they cut corners.

In the meantime, if you have not done so already, I HIGHLY recommend checking out Dream Theater. They're a progressive metal group, and their lead guitarist, drummer (both of whom I have mentioned above), and keyboardist are all supremely talented- each is near the top of his respective field. They're very much like Dragonforce, but they're more experienced. Oh, yes, and their singer has pretty much the exact same sort of voice- the kind I'm not so fond of- but again, the music makes up for it tenfold.

They're trashtalked?? hmm I didn't know that and I'm very surprised. I think Dragonforce is great but that mostly taste.
I think I can say that the guitarists who the band is formed around, Herman Li and Sam Totman, simple are good guitar players. But lots of people don't like that squealy sound and Dragonforce's lyrics are kinda cliché and not so deep.

Well, its because they all sound exactly the same, and they are exactly the same for a long time. and this is coming from someone who likes power metal. If they cut out there samey 5 minute long guitar solos they could be better. I do like "Cry for Eternity" though.

Pfff... Bingo. They seem to have the same speech impediment shared by politicians and Hideo Kojima: plenty of words come out, but very little is actually said.

I dunno, I always got the impression that, unlike politicians and Kojima, they're doing that deliberately, for fun.

They're hated because they're complete shit live. If you can't play your own stuff, people begin to question your integrity.

I like them as much as the next guy. They sound good and everything, but they're pretty much a "studio only" band. If you look up their live performances the guitars are all over the place (not in a good way)and they can't keep time too well. Plus really the only thing that separates them from other power metal bands like "hammerfall" is their guitar speed, which does more to say "hey, look how good we are" than it does to add to the music. And I dunno, something about showing off talent that you only have when you're at liberty to fuck up doesn't rub me the right way. Still, their music sounds good, and I guess that's pretty much all that matters in the end.

There was a video I saw that completely turned me of to Dragonforce.
It was one of those "Behind the Scenes" style videos showing musicians recording.

Herman Li plays a scale at medium speed (The type of thing you could do after a few weeks of guitar lessons), and then hits a button on his computer. It turns into one of those crazy up and down solos they have in every song. Do-do-do-do-do-do-do. Basic, then one button and it's in perfect rythm, at least an octave higher, and multiplied by about 10.

I used to respect them for their talent, but Studioforce has nothing now.
