Who's Maggie Thatcher?
Think the British Equivalent of Ronald Reagan. They both share the plaque on the wall o' history of "people who are either adored or scorned for their leadership in the 1980's."

So, I got to ask, is the play a drama or a comedy?

The poem it is based off of? Or the actual play? The poem is nowhere near a comedy, total drama, and the play is most likely going to be a drama, too, but you never know

step one: turn on one of the Hitler channels(history, military, or discovery channel).
step two: watch one of them for thirty minutes.
step three: use the names of Hitler's generals as people in hell.

works every time.

Also, I am accepting people for the limbo sections, people that were good, but didn't know about god. BTW, I am not trying to get a relgious message across, I am agnostic, it just seems like a fun play to do.
Richard Dawkins...looking really cheesed off at there being an afterlife.

Ghengis Khan
Attilla the Hun
Blackbeard
Bonnie and Clyde (would work well as a stand in for Mark Anthony and Cleopatra)

What's the time frame? If it's modern you gotta put in some pop culture icons that might be linked to some sins, sorta depends on your moral position.

JFK, Oswald, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Ghandi, Kurt Cobain, Churchill, John Wilks Boothe, Steve Erwin, Anna Nicole Smith, Tupac/Bigge, Malcom X

The above do not reflect my beliefs but I think might work better than more obscure historical figures, even if their evil is more severe. Dante wrote about a lot of contemporaries.

You can put L. Ron Hubbard or Tom cruise in the circle of the heretics, due to their scientology. And if people criticize it saying "Tom Cruise isn't dead yet" answer that when he does die, he'll more than likely go there.
Well, in the source, it says that people who are really evil, can be pulled straight to hell and a demon will inhabit their body until the end of their body natural life.

I just need recognizable people, like a person who would be rcognized by their name or by just seeing them, IE. Cleopatra and Hitler

T'would be a hard thing to do. You want an inspiration in play, don't go for Inferno. Inferno had novelty going for it, but if you want a format or setting to borrow, try Our Town by Thornton Wilder. It would be easier to represent the modern day by putting all the modern day characters in the same community, and focusing on their interactions. If you still want the novelty value of something unique, then Act III of Our Town may interest you a lot; it's essentially the arrival of the latest death in the town, the lead female act, her interaction with the people who had died before her (her mother, the town drunk who committed suicide, etc) and highlights what's important in life and what isn't. Easier to pull than something based off of Dante's Inferno.

But I just find that Dante's Inferno has a great message to convoy.

The Son of Sam was a mass murderer in the 70's who believed that his dog was some big space demon lord or something and was giving him orders to kill several people. Cerberus is like a dog (at least in Greek mythological terms) and i thought it was funny making a parody situation out of it

While that would be funny, Son of Sam would be in violence, while Cerberus is in gluttony, sorry about that :p
