They could have just added this feature, I wouldn't mind but I probably would use it.

"I want to meet these mythical creatures who don't know how to use the server browser." -Comment on IW's blog. =D

While they have implemented a few things, it's barely a huge thing to add in friend lists and so forth. I would still prefer dedicated servers, as then I get to know the community of my favourite servers easy as well.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warefare on PC sold 1.88 million copies.
Currently 128 thousand people have signed the petition and is still rising.

So currently about 6.8% of its ales would be gone. You might say it is a small amount, maybe, but the game would make $7.68 million dollars less then it could have.

No matter how small an amount of people, $7.68 million is a lot of money. The amount of money lost will continue to grow, but MW2 will still be a hit on consoles at the very least.

I hope MW2 for PC sells likes the PSPGo in Australia, like a piece of shit.
The funny thing about petitions is a large portion of the people who sign them will still end up purchasing the game, because in the end they are going to want to play it either with their friends who did buy it, or just for the sake of playing it.

As for my view on things I could really care less about Dedicated Servers being dropped. I've been a PC gamer and a Console gamer for many years now. It could be the fact that my connection is pretty decent but the lag factor is very little for p2p vs dedi. I just play the game because I like playing it. Just because they change how you end up starting a match really won't stop me from enjoying said game and shooting people. ^^

^ for you, in your big-city connection, maybe, but the internet is NOT even close to equal, meaning that there will be people whom simply don't have the upload rate necessary for p2p games, making for horrid experiences if and when they pull host. these people typically just connect to a local, dedicated, server which is MUCH MORE RELIABLE than a home user.
Also, its the things like custom maps and mods that we play PC for that are removed, which is why i am disappointed with IW for doing, bucking a fairly nice trend in the franchise

Just because it doesn't affect you means you don't care? Wow what a heartwarming thing to say. I'd love to have the option to connect ot a server here in charlotte on the 360, but we get shafted when it comes to multiplayer. So I get the laggy 12 yr old down the road who's brother is watching youtube at the same time as host. I have no conotrol of this. Maybe I'll sell all my games and xbox for a decent gaming pc...

I honestly don't see the problem, oh well......Yeah I've nothing creative to add to the discussion. I've always preferred the console matchmaking.

Full LAN support on Starcraft II. Because what they offer is NOT LAN, it's something else.
Why not give the option for dedicated servers? Seriously, they are underestimating people's intellect too much.

Btw, is it just me or every game published by Activision must have one or more controversies attached to it?
Guitar Hero 5: The Kurt Cobain thingy. In addition, some bundle packages included the World Tour guitar rather than the new one.
Starcraft II: Lack of LAN support.
Diablo III: Supposedly colourful, WoW-influenced art design.
Modern Warfare 2: First the price increase on UK, now this.
People complaining about the colour in Diablo 3 are.... /facepalm I don't even know what to say. The previous versions of Diablo mainly lacked colour due to lack of graphics, even then Diablo 2 was plenty colourful. Just look at Act 2! Bright yellow most of the time. As for the cartoony graphics argument? Really have you looked at the older ones? Do they look realistic at all? All of blizzards games have had some form of cartoony element, or at the very least never went for realism.
Hey, I never PERSONALLY complained about the whole "Diablo has kiddy grafixz! ZOMG!" I made an observation that games coming from Activision-Blizzard seem to attract quite a bit of controversy. Call the reasons stupid, the controversy still exists.

The problem is that MM caould always be done in a dedicated server environment. You just pick a raondom server with a good ping, BAM instant lag-free MM. But they take away the servers, and many people dont have the upload rates necesary to host games larger than a few people. It's like if the governemt decided to completely censor all aspects of the internet. Me and you'd all be fighting against it, the Tv crowd would be " I dont really care, I like tv more' and you'd say 'why cant we have BOTH?' and they'd start arguing how internet is a confusing experience and tv is funner and more streamlined and stuff. Now wouldn't you be disgruntled at their opposition to you when they dont even have a stake in it? This is what the Pc people are going thru, opposition from consolers who dont really understand servers yet are uncaring for the pc cause. And opposition from spiteful pc gamers who dont want the option to have both and would rather force their preffered MM on everyone.
It's good though that you aren't picking sides without being informed first, the Pc users would rather have everyone neutral and let them fight it out than get opposition from people who dont even deal with pc's anyway.
And I play 360 and wii only. I really dont know why I joined the fight, maybe I just dont like it when ANYONE gets shafted.

Oh Jesus CHRIST THIS!!!

Infinity Ward has already lost my money and all they are doing now is trying to save as can get more money back (from which is understandable)

No dedicated servers= no clans, also they didn't mention didly about mods.

I beg to differ, clans go strong on the consoles without dedicated servers.
But its understandable, youre used to dedicated servers and its hard to force yourself to change.
Also I dont understand why some people want mods so much, I always thought people played the game because of the way it's made. Then they go on about how the game is wonderful when they play mods that completely change what the game is about!
Ignore that last part, because Im tired and kind of rushing so it might not make too much sense in your head considering that I dont usually dont read over forum posts.

No don't worry I can see how on consoles it may be a bit of a different story, also count in the fact that I've only played a bit of consoles, and was immediatly driven off by the attitude of the playerbase (Oh god I'm tired of 8 year olds screaming high pitchedly, and others telling me to go **** my self and that I believe in Juddism (Since when did religion become a insult ??(I'm not religous(Too many brackets lol.))) I think that if you have a dedicated server that you can add to your favourites, because it has the lowest ping, or all of your friends play there... It might not be impossible on consoles, but surely it must be hella harder.

Mods give developers new ideas, you know that mod in CoD WaW ? Nazi Zombies? Based off of a COD 4 Zombie mod. Great ideas come from mods, and if those mods get popular then the developer doesn't have to fret if the players will like it or not

Essentially thing about mods is that think of it as DLC. Now think of it as creative, different. Think of it as free. Think about it as a way to squeeze a couple dozen more hours out of a game.

See the picture?

I just hope it doesn't catch on :(

Dedicated Servers are the source of so much good in the gaming world.
It's easy to focus on bad points when these fork-tongued developers sugarcoat everything they want from the customer but in reality, Dedicated Servers have been the staple diet of online gaming for nearly 2 decades. Give us a break IW!

I not to upset about the dedicated servers, all I want to know is 'will my ping be under 70?' as Im in ireland (eg: the arse end of europe) Im a bit worried. As long as its better than the console version Im happy.
Glad someone else knows the feeling... me and my buddies from Cork get the most frustrating lag and non-host disadvantage in most COD4 lobbies.

It can drive you round the bend watching killcams where you haven't fired a shot, even though in your game you emptied half your clip into someone's face.

These are also the same people who have trouble simply playing the game. I watched a neighbor's kid of ours, trying to play a game... He couldn't aim, thought the zombies were on his side, and that the people should be killed. He thought he was winning.

The scary part is that he is 13.

the lack of full lan support on starcraft 2 (was/is?) still a very stupid move on the part of blizzard. as for MW2 if I play it, I'll play on a console.

personally i don't have an issue with this way of gaming, though making it more like the console's online system(which i have no problems with) i think the only people it will really effect are the hardcore people who will play for hours on end

Given the resemblance to another PC multiplayer controversy from earlier in the year, it almost makes me wonder: If gamers could choose either "Full LAN support in StarCraft II" or "Dedicated servers in Modern Warfare 2" - but not both - which would they pick?
Uh.... uh..... oh dizamn uhhhhhh.... UMMMM... FUCK THIS IS A HARD CHOICE
UUUUUUHHHHHHHHHH
LEAVE ME ALONE!!
scurries back to the traditional comforts of Quake III Arena...

OT: It doesn't sound so bad, but I'm still skeptical. As long as it includes a server browser, I don't care what matchmaking features it includes. Every PC game with a matchmaking feature that I've tried (only two that I can think of... BF2 and L4D) made for a really really horrible experience. BF2 had a server browser, so no problem. L4D only had matchmaking, so I didn't buy it. Matchmaking only seems to work well when there's a strong backbone like Xbox Live behind it.

But if there were no consoles would Matchmaking for L4D have ever been created?

The main loss is the Mods, Dedicated with clans, Competitive mods, and I fear the most....NO CUSTOM MAPS....if that happens I will personally kill the whole MW2 team, because Custom maps give a PC game life.

Just so you don't have to look too hard, I'll put the MM points in nice bullets for you.

-Faster: Push a button. Wait couple seconds to a minute or two. Done.
For a start, joining a server using a browser takes hardly any time at all. At most it's 10 seconds to choose. 0.1 to double-click, and you're connected. All of my friends, who play exclusively on consoles can fathom it with me simply saying, "Now pick a server.".

Besides, there's no reason we can't have a "Quick Join" button. It's been done before.

-Easier: No setting up filters, pings, or anything like that. MM does it all automatically, using general settings like desired gametype. No need to know how to manage servers either - P2P is user-friendly.
No Filters? Desired gametype is a filter.
No need to know how to manage servers? You don't need to know how to manage a server to play an online game on PC. Simple as that. You think I know how to manage a server? I'm the head of the Escapists' PC gaming clan and I don't know. I get along just fine.

-More reliable: Since your playing doesn't rely on the whims of a server host, or if someone feels like being a dick, you get a more reliable online experience than servers, which are hit and miss.
Having compulsory listen servers will make finding a low-lag match the most hit-and-miss endeavour possible. I loathe the amount of time it takes me to get into a game of Halo 3 or Resistance 2 on my consoles. Not because It takes me more than a second to find the buttons, but because the lobby has to fill up, then you have to connect, then you have to wait for everyone else to connect, then you have to deal with whatever immense lag that is plaguing that game. And it is always plaguing.
With dedicated servers, there is certainly a variety of servers. A lot of which will be poor for you- laggy, bad admins, poor ping- but then there will also be many more that are good.
And you know what's better? Your connection won't alter depending on the size of the game, or on the whims of the host. The internet is not equal. I know that I have a terrible connection. Now, because of this local hosting set-up, almost all my games will lag. I know I'm not the only one.

-Self-regulating: While servers depend on individual rules and enforcement, MM is based on 1 rules set, and is universally enforced by one or more official enities. Get banned on a server? Find another server. Get banned in MM? Find another game, 'cause you're done punk.
Get banned on one server because the admin is a douche? Find another server.
Get banned on MM because the admin is a douche? Tough shit, you've got to call tech support.

-Player Control: MM offers basically the same flexibilty as servers, without the work. MM systems offer many stock filter options, such as Deathmatch, Objective, Big Teams, etc. usually with a little something for everyone. Further almost all MMs offer Private Matches and Party Lobbies where friends can get togther before looking for a game, or to join their own custom game wth any number of tweakable options, for everything from screwing around to serious competition.
I'm sorry, I thought you didn't have to deal with filters?

What work? Clicking "Find server", copying and pasting the IP given, and hitting enter? Is that really work? Christ. I'm a bloody hard labourer, then.

What people need to do is stop bawling, realize this isn't Burger King, that you can't have it your way, and shut up and play. Stop throwing around that "personal freedom" phrase like it actually means something. You have no qualms restricting the fun and freedom of the people you cut out of playing what they like when you have nothing but 2Fort, Karkand or de_dust servers, but when someone levels the playing field you cry foul and bawl and ***** and call home to momma.
I find it incredible that you're dismissing almost everyone's opinion like they don't mean anything. Do you really think that this many people, including the majority of game journalists, almost all game admins, and almost all gamers, are wrong?
And even if they are, why aren't the developers listening to the community, as they do so claim to be doing?

And if this is all wrong, and we're all jumping the gun and they will somehow not cut any features from the current method, then whoop-de-do, I owe you a beer.

I do wonder though. How much would console gamers complain if they forced you to use only a dedicated server system with a browser?
