For the past month I've had just an awful time getting to sleep. Normally I'd read a book or listen to some mellow music but that just keeps me up now. So then I tried just shutting everything off and laying there in the darkness but that didn't help because my mind seems restless. And when I finally do fall asleep it's for maybe 2 or 3 hours and I wake up and can't fall back to sleep.. arg.

Anyways topic; Have you ever suffered from insomnia and if so how do you deal with it? Cause this 24/7 tired feeling is really bringing me down.

I've never been diagnosed as having insomnia but I've found it hard too sleep a few months ago. Fun fact: Most "insomniacs" are asleep less than 20 minute after their head hits the pillow - read that in the little book of sleep, could have been Q.I book of general ignorance though.

EDIT: Apparently the potassium in bananas helps you sleep.

I'm not diagnosed but I will seriously just sit in bed for maybe an hour and a half without sleep coming on. And honestly the wait for sleep is not as bad as waking up for no good reason 3 hours later.

Anyway, generally if I find that I'm not falling asleep, I'll stick on a DVD (generally a TV series), put the volume down (still enough that I can hear it though) and I tend to fall asleep during that.

Stress-induced insomnia, yeah, I've had that. Luckily, once my stress levels are back at their normal 'highly-strung for anyone else' levels I find it much easier to fall asleep.

I've had sleep problems all my life. Night terrors from my early teens until now, irregular sleep patterns, sleep walking, sleep panic attacks, sleep apnea (brief, caused by dental work). I'm just pretty damned bad at anything involving sleep.

Omg the nightmares too. This past month I've experienced nightmares like never before in my life. Why must the brain be so weird?

Sounds like you have a case of stress-induced insomnia. Are you really worried about something lately? I'm having a bit of that myself right now. Fucking rats... Usually the best way to solve it is to fix whatever problem you have or get an answer to whatever question is bothering you.

I've never been able to fix my main form of insomnia without sleeping pills. I don't feel safe until it's a certain time. Usually 3-4am or I have to go to bed really early. I always feel like something is going to happen and I need to be awake when it does. Sleeping with a form of light helps along with sleeping in an elevated place. The whirling of a fan or some sort of white sound is also helpful. Keep all door closed and windows shut/curtains closed. The best one is usually having my pet in the room. I figure she'd heard or notice something off long before me.

I haven't been diagnosed with Insomnia and I don't always have trouble sleeping but sometimes I just can't get to sleep. I'll be in bed at 11 and won't be asleep till 1:30. I'll just lay there restlessly for two and a half hours.

I usaully don't have trouble with waking up constantly though, sometimes i'll wake up way too early, like 3:00 and not be able to get back to sleep but that's not very common unlike my trouble getting to sleep which happens much more than i'd like.

Never bad. I've had times where it might take a little longer to fall asleep, but if I notice that happening after 15-20 minutes, I do something until I become tired. Put on a movie, usually.

And if I do have trouble sleeping one night, it'll more often than not be fixed the next night.

If I have something to be up for, but don't feel tired, I'll take out my lenses and do something restful like reading a book.

If I don't have to be up for anything, I'll just accept it and settle in for some gaming or movie/tv watching.

If I can't sleep one night, I watch bad 80s movies until I fall asleep.

If it's happening to you every night, then look at if you're doing something to contribute to that, like eating late or doing stuff while on your bed (like watching TV in bed is supposed to make it hard to sleep, I think). Otherwise, do more stuff during the day to help you tired, I guess.

Parasomnia and night terrors here (lucid nightmares/sleep paralysis are worse than not being able to sleep :/ )

I've got hypnotic drugs but they make me a zombie for the next 48 hours, so I hate using them.

I've found working out more than usual helps, especially cardio.

Sleeping pills can be really nice but they're also very addictive. Doing a load of exercise, not eating anything 2 hours before bed, and keeping a regular time when you go to bed are the best things you can do.

I have insomnia on occasion and there are a few ways I am able to deal with it and their effectivness varies.

1. sex: After an amazing night of sex its very rare that I have insomnia unless I am required to stay up for an hour after talking.

2. Exercise: working out yourself to the point of exhaustion is a great way to get some sleep. Many times your body has so much pent up stress and energy that you arn't releasing and therefore your body doesn't want to rest.

3. Medical Marijuana: When options 1 and 2 both fail, MMJ has never failed to help me sleep a full night of peaceful sleep. I know many people are ignorant to its medicinal benefits so I suggest you look it up yourself if you do not know it. Also please make sure the type of MMJ you get is indica and not sativa. Reason being is indica gets you the relaxation in order to rest and sativa is for the mind/deep thinking. Also if you visit a dispensary do not forget to ask them for a grade that has a high CD count. CD is how potent the relaxation and removal of pain is. THC is the psychoactive part. So you can get high without turning into a stereotype stoner.

The worse thing you could do is get sleeping pills that are incredibly expensive and has so many chemicals that are bad for you (including harsh addictions). I have seen first hand experience of the toll those have created. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I generally need some time to fall asleep, 30-40 minutes most nights but I don't consider that insomnia it's just the way I've always been likely because I have a joint condition and it takes that long to find a spot that I can be comfortable in long enough to fall asleep.

However about 2 years ago I had a period of about 2 weeks when I hardly slept at all. I'd go to bed my usual time not be able to sleep and then i'd get up and do something I knew I wasn't going to get caught up in. Watch an infomercial or something that I've seen before or read a random chapter in a book I'd already read something like that. Then i'd try to sleep again and an hour later I'd get up again. usually around 7 or 8 in the morning I'd finally fall asleep and then I'd be up at 9-9:30 and in a stupor and do it all over again. I knew if I let myself sleep though the morning though I'd never break the cycle and sleep at my normal time.

I tired just about everything to get myself to sleep right. hot baths, changing what i ate and when. I even got a paint by numbers to have something to do that was soothing but didn't require a lot of thought. In the end I need to get a mild over the counter sleeping pill and as soon as I got too nights of sleep in a row I didn't have any trouble after that.

I'll go with this answer, I know for one I used to use medication to sleep standard pill shit, had no effect after awhile and then I got shit withdrawal symptoms, never had that problem with MJ, my advice, look for a good kush, bluberry is awesome cuz it doesn't tend to stink as much, smells more like a fresh blueberry plant, that stuff will put you to sleep, trick is, finding a doctor who'll hook you up with a card, can be difficult depending on where you live, and in some places medical marajuana hasn't been recognized as legal yet, unfortunately, fortunately I live in canada people, CANADA FTW!

I play Dwarf Fortress either until sunrise or until my brain is too addled by all its crazy shit to continue normally.

Also getting up earlier tends to be a good workaround for me.

I have quite bad insomnia, in bed at 10pm fall asleep around 4am wake up at 7am.
For me it's due to having a huge melatonin deficiency, I had it under control for awhile untill Australia banned the only thing that worked for me. Now I'm back to the old cycle and once again hating the place I live.
