I've also found that there are no measures that work against it so far. Massive exercise does not work, reading boring stuff does not work, relaxing hot showers don't work. Getting drunk and stoned enough to fall asleep typically defeats itself by making me stay up long enough to get enough alcohol/THC in my system. I tried taping my math teacher's voice, because it always put me to sleep in class, but that turned out to be a regular occurrence due to not getting enough sleep in the first place. Melatonin stopped working after two weeks. Post-coital drowsiness has yet to be tried, if you'll excuse my vulgarity there, and it is my last hope. This has been going on for as long as I can remember, and until my dad and sister told me how quickly they fell asleep, I thought it was a normal thing. Then, because it was dinner, I winged a bun at their heads.

I'm a really poor sleeper, no matter how tired I am, I just don't sleep well, or for long.
Same here, but my bed is like an inclined plain because people always sit on one side of it, it's hard to find a comfortable spot.

I always sleep for 8 hours.
But that doesn't say anything about when I go to sleep, which used to be between 3am and 11am(great to ruin any day, missed a lot of birthdays because of it).
I am able to completely switch my sleeping pattern in a few days(from monday to wednesday I would be asleep around 1am, thursday I would be unable to sleep until 11am and then go to bed again around 10pm and sleep until 11am the next day only to go one or two days without sleep)

The last few weeks it's been a lot better though. About 2 weeks ago I asked my doctor for some medication to help me sleep, something extremely rare for me since I refuse to take any medication. My doctor told me I should try one last time to adjust my sleeping pattern and since then I've been able to sleep from 1am to 9am.(trying to find a job for some time now and move out of my mother's house) My only fear is that when I no longer have the 'threat' of medication, I go back to my old sleeping pattern.

I normally go to bed at 11 PM, but I can't sleep for hours after that. Sometimes I only fall asleep in the wee wee hours of the morning. And If I do fall asleep, I only sleep for a few hours. I'm almost permanently exhausted. But hey, it's my own fault. I think too much.

No matter the severity?
Well, it takes me about one to three hours to go to sleep after lying down in bed, no matter at what time, no matter how tired I am. Reading books during that time helps though.

I'm also extremely sleepy in the morning and quite capable of falling asleep again under a cold shower.
Same with me.

I seem to go through cycles where every so often my sleeping habits are all over the place. I'm a pretty light sleeper anyway...most times the slighest noise will stir me during the earlier hours of the morning. My deepest sleep, if I'm lucky, is around 3am-6am.

I think the two biggest contributors are heat and stress.

When it is generally warmer I have a difficulty sleeping at night...tossing and turning, can never seem to get comfortable.

I think during the most stressful times of my life: big exams when I was in college, arguments with past girlfriends or (now) my wife, work....when I know a huge project is due and no one seems to know what the hell is going on or cares except me, when I was unemployed.

Those were the worst times and I seem to be immune to most sleep medications. Ambien, nightquill, Tylenol PM, etc...don't really seem to do much for me. Actually the only surefire thing I know that tends to knock me out is champagne if I drink a few glasses.

I'm 38 now and I look back and think I average about 5-6 hours of sleep a day. That's an average...sometimes I actually get 7-8, sometimes 2-3. Been that way for years.

I have this problem where my brain wave activity is off the damned charts. I went to a sleep therapy centre for a while and they hooked up the big ol' brain machines and everything. The problem is that because I have a massively fast metabolism that I have stupidly large amounts of energy I need to burn off. When I don't get the most out of every day, I can't stop thinking for about four hours before I finally fall asleep.
That sounds just like me. I just start thinking about everything once I get to bed, mostly about The Escapist and school.

2:30 to sleep, 7:15 to wake, practically every night. Otherwise I just sit in my bed feeling unproductive. Generally any homework is done late at night.

I tend to develop insomnia during any periods of vacation. With no school or work to occupy my thoughts, I start working on things that require large amounts of uninterrupted time and concentration. It starts off fairly modest, but it always ends up at the same place: I look up one night, and it's 4:30 am. I'm on my third cup of orange juice, I don't feel tired in the least, I don't want to derail my train of thought, and I know the sunrise will be beautiful to watch... And so I stay up. If I manage to get to bed at all, it's not until around 9:30. I wake around 4... And the cycle begins again.

Strangely, I'm most productive in the wee hours of the morning. Go figure.

This is more popular as a thread than I actually expected.

I suspect that gamers tendency towards insomnia is something to do with the stimulating nature of computing. It's been scientifically proven that staring at a screen can shunt a normal person's sleep pattern about an hour foward. Just think of what hours and hours of relentless pixilation can do to one. The joy.

Gee, I wonder why... (yes, I'm being sexist and cynical, what a shock!)

Because, absolutely, I call out my legions and legions of adoring fans just to make a thread hit the front page more often.
