The Singer from Raqe was at one point rumoured to be doing an album with DJ Shadow & he appeared on a Blackalicious track. That's the closest he has got to Rap as such. If people like House of Pain & early De La Soul they should check out true party Hip-Hop with an awesome DJ in the form of Ugly Duckling. Saw them live & they had breakdancers, Graf artists & a magician with them. People who keep saying Hip-Hop is just poetry set to music are clueless. Poetry is spoken word, not all rap is. Check out the Latryx album & then tell me it's poetry. The two MC's use their voices as some sort of mad sonic soundscape. Before you can say what a genre is you need to have fully explored it's murky depths, until then your opinion has no base. It's just the same when people write off Reggae after listening to Shaggy & Shabba ranks.

Sorry for ranting people.

Zack de la rocha sure looks a bit close to rap on this track. Not necessary extremely good rap, but some kind of rap

Take a look at Fort Minor. Also I believe Lupe Fiasco was mentioned above.

I like good rap and I have to agree with you about the "my dick is bigger then your dick" stuff.
I think System of a Down had a song about that.
Yeah, but in between lyrics like die, die, blood, die, satan and a cock contest, I'll go with what is the funniest.
True, I will definitely take funny over all that. I would take thought provoking over funny though. That's why I like System of a Down they can do both sometimes.

I will also add Rage Against the Machine to that list of good rap. I assume you've already heard of them but I'm just making sure.
Wait, Rage Against the Machine is rap? Aren't those guys long haired swinging electric guitars and screaming? Are they rhyming even? I don't know them too well, but I remember their first CD back then and it didn't sound like rap. Maybe they changed afterwards.
Are you sure it's a consensus though? If I go to the CD store, Rage Against the Machine will be in the rap section?
It won't be in the rap section but it's genre is debatable. Definitely rap/metal.

I think Rage are even harder to define than that, some of the bass lines are straight up funk. Lets give them their own special section they deserve it & lets pretend Audioslave never happened while we are at it.

Okay Rage Against the Machine is now a new genre.

I like Audioslave by the way. They just happen to waste Tom Morello's talent a bit.

EIDT: I forgot Wyclef Jean! Sorry, add that to you list of stuff to check out.

Thing is though when you compare them to Rage & Soundgarden they just seem meh. I envisioned some messed up hybrid of those two bands & instead I got middle of the road rock with a couple of decent tunes thrown in. Each to their own though :)

Counterpoint: "Rapture." It's just a new-wave song but halfway through Debbie Harry does this rap part, complete with references to some hip-hop pioneers that the band presumably liked. And that kind of thing definitely wasn't standard for rock music in 1981. Nowadays it seems that almost any kind of rock that doesn't involve singing in that Blink-182-style whiny-white-guy voice qualifies as "rap" or "rapcore" or "rap metal" or whatever (case in point: Limp Bizkit).

(If I found you a video it would be from the early 80s and would, consequently, suck.)

Yeah because screemo metal is totally rap. I really don't like your tone buddy boy, chill out. Just because people have different opinions than you doesn't mean you have to be trollish.

A few examples would be nice for the sake of the guy who made this thread.

EDIT: Fuck. My bad dude I forgot you already did that. Sorry.

Yuuuuuuuuuuu Deeeeeeeeeee!

Saw them live a couple of years back when they came to the UK. Excellent show.

To the OP, I would personally reccomend checking out Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash (old school!), MF Doom, J5, Roots Manuva and the like. Perhaps check out some trip hop if you want to hear the more experimental beats and rhythms. Rap and Hip Hop are much wider genres than people give them credit for.

I agree that it probably shouldn't be. However, when I look up "rapcore" on Wikipedia, I see these bands among the examples of the "rap rock" genre: Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Red Hot Chili Peppers, 311.

-- Alex

EDIT: I mean physically whiny more so than lyrically whiny, by the way. Like, it's a certain affect that has really come to dominate what's seen as mainstream "rock."

I don't see how people can complain about mainstream rap, while there is just about as much violence, degrading, and language in tv and movies (if not more). I also hate it when people listen to like three radio songs and watch B.E.T. for 30 minutes and think they know about hip hop. Not all mainstream rappers are bad, granted a lot of them are but no one ever looks hard enough. Take TI and Chamillionaire for example, both are mainstream and have had there time on the radio but I bet a very little amount of people actually heard TI's "Dead and Gone" or "Live in the Sky". Or Chamillionaire's "It's just pain" or "Think I'm Crazy". Everyone just loves to be on their high horse and judge hip hop from the very little they know.

There's rap for everyone to be inspired by, if you want to kill people, and rape girls, you got gangsta rap, if you wanna be insightful, scientific even, you got common, or even "psycho-social biological and electromagentic manipulation of human conciousness" by Jedi Mind, way back like 7 years ago. Even MC Front-a-lot or MC Chris has the nerd rap stuff down. That's why I love hip-hop and rap in general, it always speaks to what I'm feeling at the time.
