I like jazz. The Sam and Max soundtrack always delivers on smooth, instrumental jazz.

I'm a musician and have played symphonic, jazz, swing, rock, pop, funk, you name it. I love insturmental music personally, it's great for having the zen garden music to relax to and get ready for bed. I fell in love with the Turnabout Jazz Soul album, which is Phoenix Wright music orchestrated into jazz band arrangements and they're excellently done. I really can't stand classical (save the Moonlight Sonata) and with symphony I'm extremely picky but I do like the more passionate, powerful symphony like Sons of War by Two Steps from Hell or Preliator by Globus.

Yay. I love it as ambience.

I think Vidna Obmania or Lustmord is my style when it comes to lyricless music, although my tastes are varied.
Check out A+ art movie Brian "Lustmord" soundtracked and did foley for:

Zoetrope (2006)

Eraserhead / Tetuso: IRON MAN - esque adaptation of Franz Kafka's "In the Penal Colony".

Available at amazon.com and record label website mentioned in link. Worth it.

Soundtrack sold more than actual DVD. [/tidbit]

I love it. Especially as a techno lover. I can't tell you how many electronic songs are ruined by stupid vocal samples or half-assed rapping.

About 2/3 of my iTunes library is instrumental music. I tend to prefer soundtracks, simply because there is added meaning in the music's association with its source material. Even old game music, before it was actually orchestral, is amazing (especially the work of Nobou Uematsu).

I listen to a lot of instrumental music. It's just more relaxing to me, and lyrics tend to distract me when I'm working (why yes, I am easily distracted).

I listen to all kinds of instrumental stuff. Post-Rock, Classic, Instrumental Metal, Chillout/Ambient, Jazz/Nu-Jazz/Doom Jazz, etc.
Whats Doom Jazz? It sounds fun and completly hard to picture in my head.

I'm the same way with distracting lyrics too. It helps when I can't make them out, as in most songs I hear.

It's depends. Some instrumental stuff just repeats and recycles, but when it's good, it's really good. Take John 5's solo stuff for example.
*gasp* Someone knows of the best guitarist ever! :D

I was gonna mention him, I love all his stuff. When it comes to instrumental, I prefer when the main focus is the guitar.

Metal is all about the instruments and the skill and art invoked when playing them.

That is why I fucking love instrumentals, even if most of them album is instrumentals.

Just take Warmen's albums for example, good classic masterpieces, hardly any vocals, but who cares?

Ah, Warmen, you gotta love them. They make such a beautiful combination of metal and classical music. And I especially love the Salieri songs. Thank God for Janne Wirman. He's part of two insanely awesome bands.

I would rather point out that most vocal music tends to repeat itself to the point where it's just absolutely redundant. That aside though, I'm not sure why there is a differentiation between instrumental and vocal music.

Listen to something like uh, the Evpatoria Report or any post-rock ('tis but a scratch to the surface but you might undestand what I mean) and you will never ever be looking back to vocals.

Try looking for these bands on Youtube:

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble
The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation (same band as the first one, just different releases)
Bohren & der Club of Gore

It's really slow, heavy music with Jazz influences. It's sexy+scary.

I have listened to some post-rock, and it's alright. Some of it's pretty good, but I still much prefer songs with vocals.

Gershwin, Steve Vai, Pink Floyd, Benny Goodman just to name a few. It's all good, but like what some other people have said some can be crap.

Oh yes.
I love instrumental, especially the stuff you find in the Escapist Music Library.
Unfortunately, that place is about as used as a fish enema.

well I love my game music, most of which is instrumental so I guess that counts, I also have my share of soundtrack/remix albums

OP: I don't see why you'd get stick for liking instrumental music, a lot of popular music is instrumental or someone repeating the same phrase over and over again(which is on the same level as instrumental, sort of, in terms of complexity, unless there's a lot of different stuff going on). I like some music that might be described as "obscure" or "dodgey" (namely Japanese stuff) and I've only been called out by 3 people on that, all of which think JLS actually have talent and their music is actually mixed properly.
