I'm sure you'd be glad to know that the Lego Idiana Jones idea has gone down well, it's going to be our next attempt and hopefully won't be a repeat of Sonic....not sure my sides could take it again.

You're better off to build her a shoe-shaped house in it or something, my cock-shaped rocketship didn't really go down to well.
Clearly you need to find your audience; showing that to me would have had me in tears (of pure joy).

Umm...
Kotor?
I mean, it's good.

Ok, maybe something simpler...
Well, you can never go wrong with God of War.

I'm trying to find a simple game to help ease my girlfriend into gaming and I'm struggling a little bit so I'm wondering if anyone else has done this successfully and what they used?

She's not against gaming and is actually willing to give it a go but trying to get her playing anything harder than Peggle/Bejewelled isn't working out too well, the last game we attempted (Sonic 2) was a bit of a disaster (although it was hilarious to watch).

So...suggestions anyone?

*Edit* If it's possible to keep to console based suggestions I'd appreciate it, 'Animal Crossing' etc. would possibly work but it wouldn't be that easy to make into an activity we can both enjoy (I would assume).
Pokemon. Everyone likes pokemon.

Anything Co-op. Then you can help her out actively and teach her the ropes while keeping her more or less alive. Borderlands, Halo 3, Crackdown, etc.

I've not had much contact with Harvest Moon before...is it solely single player? The idea is for her to start co-op/multiplayer with me before I surprise her with a console of her own later down the line (I will convert her to the gaming way of life eventually) so this could be considered later on....what is it even on? From your description I want to assume Nintendo are involved...

TL:DR

Just kidding. I read the whole thing and was impressed with the quality of information you provided. Its a great guide actually. Just wanted to give your effort some recognition. Its making my "play lego games' suggestion feel inferior. He has a complex now. Thanks
I completely forgot about the lego games.

which is silly, because I just finished getting 100% on Lego Batman.

If you have a PS2 or a Wii, get her Okami.

As for something you both enjoy... I'm not sure. There aren't many games that offer offline co-op anymore. Which is disappointing.

But if you have a PS3, try starting her out on Little Big Planet.

Nice. And since we have definitelty helped this gentleman, time for a derailing thread hijack. Congrats on the 100%. We just 100% lego star wars the complete saga last week. It took forever and a day. Blue minikits and white ones, come on.

Thats funny becuase I tried sonic for that same purpose and it failed bad. By far my "other half's" favorite game is anything in the lego series. Infinite lives helps alot. Me getting frustarted that she pays no attention to me, the story, or where to go next, not as helpful.
Ugh I deal with the same issue. Picked up two coppies of LegoSW for the DS and well it kind of turned her off on gaming for a while.

ot/ My only sugestion is to make it something she can play on her own, but make it accessable to experience together. Offer help but do not insist on helping.

oh, and most important, whatever your girlfriend lands on when it comes to gaming, even if it's just farmville or neopets, be happy with it.. It's nice to share similar interests, and playing games together can be really fun, but don't force a square peg into a round hole, and don't force someone who isn't interested in gaming into gaming..

Not saying that's you, I don't know you from anyone on the street.. I'm just sharing some of my observations of other couples trying in vain to share interests that neither of them share. It leads to a mess, and I just thought I'd share the caution. Make sure she wants to play games, and be happy with whatever games she lands on, even if they're not your cup of tea.

Pretty much everyone in this thread has helped out so thanks and metaphorical cookies for all!

Congrats on hitting your 100% as well, always feels good regardless of the game.

*EDIT*

Never fear, in my limited experience trying to ecnourage girlfriends to do anything they don't want to always ends up bad!

Take this advice. It's good.

Also, we as seasoned gamers probably take a lot of our skills for-granted and already know what our preferred genres are. We already sorta know if we will like something if we hear and see a bit about the game. You kinda have to take a step back and break down the elements of the game you are looking at and see what a newcomer would think of it.

When I had to listen to my brother explain the controls for a guy starting to play Modern Warfare 2, I was amazed. (Right stick to look, left stick to move, click right stick to knife, right trigger to shoot, left bumper to aim, A to jump, B for stance, etc.) You have to take into account how multi-tasking intensive the game is, how many actions are assigned to each button, how many buttons you'll be expected to use commonly throughout the game or within a period of time, etc. You don't want her to be overwhelmed by the stuff you have to memorize and the things on the screen that you have to pay attention to.

Out of curiosity, how did she end up messing up Sonic 2? Is it really that hard?

it is a series of games made by natsume with games going as far back as the nes(or snes, i forget)
one is A wonderful life on the gamecube, and Friends of mineral town, for the GBA. there are also a few for the ps2. there are a few for the DS and wii but they arent as good.
for the co-op 4swords adventure for the gamecube.

if I had to venture a guess, it's because Sonic 2 uses negative reinforcement. Get hit once, all of your rings fly away in a shower of you failing, and sonic looks at you with a surprised look that basically says "WTF ARE YOU DOING!?"

plus, it's really really fast by definition, and newer gamers prefer games that let them move at their own pace. Try getting someone who's never played a game, and putting them in one of those Auto-Scrolling levels in any of the old platformers. The ones that will crush you against platforms etc.

They'll HATE it.

I guess it is! I think, as you and a few others have mentioned, pretty much everyone on here has been gaming for years so to think of Sonic as a challgen is a bit of an alien concept.

Sadly, as someone who hadn't been gaming for years the idea of making the blue hedgehog jump, move and not die all at the same time seemed to be a stretch too far. Especially at the speed the game asks of you. Possibly Mario would've made more sense.

I don't think I've seen Sonic drown as often before though...hopefully won't see it again either, the look on his face the umpteenth time was almost accusing *shudder*
