Dammit. Darwinism defeated by technology. Everyone should know not to hide under a tree during a thunderstorm. New article title "Ipod saves stupid bitches life" -.-;
Haha, I was thinking the very same thing. Oh well. Technology is great but stupidy is often bigger -> In the end darwinisme always wins.

ITT, people acting like complete and utter pricks.

Honestly, they were in the middle of a thunderstorm and probably freaked out. But of course, this being the Escapist, we get such wonderful comments like "she deserves to die for being stupid".

Who knew the Escapist was simply bursting with pretentious, "I am superior to thee" jackasses?

she is fourteen years old, you can't really blame her on not thinking to clear when being surprised by a thunderstorm and finding herself suddenly in a potentially dangerous situation

Sophie Frost, 14, and her boyfriend Mason Billington, also 14, sheltered under a tree in King George V Playing Field, in Rayleigh, Essex, during a thunder storm on Monday night.
STUPID MOTHERFUCKERS, you do not ever take shelter under a tree in a lightning storm for that very reason!!
This.^
Agreed.

Mind you, the only thing Sophie seemed worried about was that her new iPod was frazzled.
What? She could've died. If the headphones were in her head the lightning would've hit her in the head and she would've died, yet all she cares about is her iPod?

Was reading the paper this morning and found this story in an article:
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20090619/tuk-lightning-teenager-saved-by-ipod-6323e80.html
For all the naysayers out there who think teens spend too much time listening to their Ipods ;)
Actually, if they had spent less time listening to her iPoo and MORE TIME PAYING ATTENTION, she wouldn't have been so dumb as to hide UNDER A TREE IN A LIGHTING STORM. She is so fucking <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.120306?page=3#2358896>Christian...
iPoo.. Thats a good one hur hur hurr

You can't really blame a couple of 14 year olds for having a lapse of judgement when they got scared. Also, her earphones were out, so I can only guess she wasn't actually listening to it.
Not only that, but is it not inconceivable that they were sheltering from rain, and didn't knwo there was lighting until it struck?

I was in that thunderstorm! I was walking through a field with my bike, i was so scared i thought i was going to get hit.

Shes lucky she had her boyfriend with her to take her to safety, she could have been left for dead under that tree.

...Steve Jobs, you evil marketing genius.

The iPod acts as a lightning rod for senseless teenagers, eh? No, seriously, lightning storms and trees don't mix. They can be sadistically hilarious, though, given proper circumstance.

Maybe I misread it, but wasn't it the Ipod that almost kill her, her only lucky break being that it wasn't hooked up to her ears? And I have to agree with Orannis; hiding under a tree was stupid.
No, I can see how the Ipod (or, more likely, the rubber ear buds) saved her. Much the same as how a car is safe because of the rubber tires, even though most of the rest is metal.
Umm... no... Rubber doesn't stop it dead. the reason a car is safe is due to the "Faraday Cage" effect.

Why would you hide under a tree? you're so much safer in the open than under a tree.....Even at 14 I KNEW that......maybe I was just smarter than 14 year olds today......hmmmm

The fact that she was more concerned over the iPod being fried than her safety says something doesnt it?

Hmm? That's not why a passenger in a car is safe from lightning strikes -- the rubber doesn't do much to insulate the car. The car acts as a Faraday cage, meaning the static charge travels along the outside of the car, safely diverting the lightning strike from the interior. In this case, the headphone wiring is a better conductor than human flesh, but it got extremely hot and probably melted the insulation, causing the burns.
Exactly. The rubber in the earbuds didnt do anyhting for her. Lucky they wernt in her ears or she might have lost her hearing from those burns. Also could possibly have lost some memories if the current jumpred form one bud to the other while they where on opposite sides of her head.

^ Both of these. Seriously. Say you're in a storm. Heavy rain, winds, dark, and you don't see a building. You have an iPod and probably don't want it getting wet. You go under a tree for shelter. THEN the thunder and lightning strikes, after that. Do you run into sheets of water and strong winds or do you stay under and hope that it doesn't strike that particular tree. Who's to say if it'll hit where you are or not? You're not sure. And to top it off you're afraid and confused. Cut them a bit of slack.

Oh no its a lightning storm!
Lets see, if I remember correctly I should run under a tree and I should wave a big metal pole to keep the lightning away.

I may seem like a jerk for that but I am seriously happy she's alive.
