Its not a big deal. The main people who're complaining are probably without a job and still in school, or a student who can't afford it. In which case, i have this to say to you...

DON'T USE IT.

To respond to the penny arcade article, is it really worth the price tag to get cross game chat and a "better" invite system?

I'll take my free PSN any day.

OP: Depends on how you look at it. When a competitor offers a comparable service for the low cost of $0.00, then a price hike is in poor taste. A tiered system like the one offered on PSN (PSN+) may be more appropriate.
2 things:

first xboxlive is already tiered. all owners get silver level for free and pple are speculating that live with come out with an even higher tier then gold http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.229830-Pachter-Predicts-100-Xbox-Live-Platinum-Membership

second the reason for the increase in gold level is overhead. inflation, and the fact that they have added hulu, netflix, movie rentals, etc(who i might add all must get paid something by m$ or at the very least cost money to maintain on/through their network)

so for the little babies whining about the $10 increase i gotta say STFU

Except that its not really comparable. I own both a PS3 and a Xbox 360, and I think PSN is inferior in almost every way possible from the services provided to the download speed (PSN has horrible download speeds compared to XL).
Well people like me can wait for 10 more minutes if if means I can can hae an extra $60 to buy a game. PSN has a wide variety of exclusive ad mulitplatform titles and so does the 360. Where is it justifyable (?) to make me pay $60 to have a party up option and cross game chat? I don't get how PSN is horrible it basically has everything XBL has. Elaborate?

Pretty much this. Xbox Live (and gaming in general) is a hobby, nothing more. This isn't something you're required to have. If you can afford it, great! If not, find an alternative.

Bitching and moaning about inflation is like bitching about the sun rising every day.

Im sorry, it's not comparable, it doesn't even offer the same baseline features.

To answer this "is it really worth the price tag to get cross game chat and a "better" invite system"

Abso-fucking-lutly. It's awesome. Say im goofing off playing defense grid and a buddy wants to co-op L4D2, he sends me an invite and i hit accept and BOOM. im in his game. ( I might have to actually get up and put the disc in if it's not already there) No bullshit, no puttign in the game first, then searching for his server or any of that crap. Cross game chat is awesome. I have friends that live rather far away, I can chat them up while we play two seperate games.

10 minutes? There have been times where I bought a new PS3 game, brought it home and inserted it into my PS3 only to find out I had to download a system update, and then a few patches for the game as well afterward, with the total process taking over a hour and a half. I literally have never had to spend more then 10 min on a update for the Xbox 360.

Basically, Xbox live is just everything the PSN is but faster and better. Also, XBL keeps its gamer servers alive for longer.
I don't care for that kind of explanation. "Its just better" doesn't do anything for me. I never had to wait an hour for any update. The longest system update being 20 min and the longest game update (fucking Bioshcok 2) and installation being 15 minutes. Tell me the features that make this totally worth paying $60 to M$ rather than towards a game developer.

The servers for all the PS games I play have never fucked over and made me incapable of playing a game.

I have had my 360 since launch and never once had issues with it, not even a RRoD. Doesn't mean others haven't.

Honestly it amazes me that PSN still doesn't have an equivalent to LIVE's party system, I probably use that more than I use my 360 for gaming.
I was told it did have something like that.
Then I was told it involved PlayStation Home.

I don't want to find out.

It's a big enough deal for me to not be renewing my subscription once mine is up at the end of this month. I can get better multiplayer on my PC, and that's all I use Xboxlive Gold for anyway.

$10 gives me 3 packs of cigarettes. Yeah, it's a pretty big deal.
Wow, here we pay about 15-25 dollar per package. Sheesh.
Yeah, seriously Andy. Where are you getting your smokes? I'm paying close to $20 for three packs.

Having both a 360 and a PS3 I must say that if I am going to play multiplayer I would much rather be on the 360 paying $60 than the PS3's poor excuse for online. Not everyone will agree with me but I would rather pay my 5 bucks a month for a far superior online system. That said I still play all of my fighting games on PS3 because that controller rocks the 360 one.

No, the increase isn't that big of a deal. What most are bitching about is that it's $10 a year more to Microsoft. If Steam started charging extra for the ability to use the service they wouldn't have a problem with it. It's double standards and hypocrisy that some companies are ok to want to make a profit and it's wrong for others just based on what the rules of the "indie cred" movement says.
Uncalled for comment here? That's kinda missing the point of the topic here...

Where the hell are you from? Here it's $3 a pack. That is, unless you buy Dunhill which is a bit more expensive but still, $15 for a pack? That's just insane man.
It's £5-6 pounds here in the UK.
I see you're eastern European, doesn't surprise me it's cheaper over there.

It's true, our incomes are completely different when compared to Western Europe. One of the many reasons why I've decided to move to Canada.

Good choice, I'd love to move there myself.

xbox live is pushing buttons, they should compartmentalize their service, but everyone has to pay for all the shit they don't want. Guess what Im in canada you dont have netflix, take off money, I could care less about your zune, majors minute or all of the other up to date bs. I got off of the escapist, ign, gamespot first. I have to pay extra monthly for stuff that I don't want.

Not really when there are comments saying that Steam is a better service in the topic. I used Steam as an example because the people that like it would goladly pay it just like the people that like XBL Gold will (mostly) happily pay the extra .83 cents a month. What I meant about double standards is that (since I mentioned Steam I'll use Valve as an example) a lot of people don't like Microsoft (some replacing the "s" with a $) making a profit, but have no problem with Valve trying to make a profit.

I wasn't meaning any disrespect to people who like Steam if that is what you are thinking, just using them as an example.
