Not gonna lie, that was a little creepy. Maybe because I actually know some of these people, but come on.
I doubt it. Calling people out for terrible entertainment is pretty common (Michael Bay, George Lucas etc). Pitchford already knows that these games were poorly received and the joke is just a heavier version of Your Music's Bad and You Should Feel Bad.Demon ID said:I tend to stay away from this whole Sarkeesian thing as it just seems to be rocket fuel for the eternal debate of sexism within videogames but I do think it's quite sick and twisted that such a fan fiction exists because someone was involved in a game you didn't like.
I don't feel comfortable when people dislike me, I can't think how I'd react if I found out someone had great fun depicting my death for the amusement of others. What I'm reading doesn't sound tongue in cheek either, just a bad joke and Randy Pitchford dying is a punchline because... he did that thing you didn't like?
I'm finding myself trying to figure out how I'd react if I were Randy Pitchford stumbling across this. I'd likely cry a little.
In what way does it imply she thinks it's ok to kill someone you don't like? That is a gigantic leap of logic and makes you lose a lot of credibility in my eyes.Tenkage said:http://femfreq.tumblr.com/

Easy, by putting it up onto her tumbler, not mentioning anything about the fact SHE KILLS A HUMAN BEING, it is clear she condones it. If she would put on her twitter she doesn't like the killing part, then I wouldn't put this on the forum.bluepotatosack said:In what way does it imply she thinks it's ok to kill someone you don't like? Were talking about a real person here, not a fictional person a real living breathing human creature.Or maybe I'm too desensitized to understand what's so sickening about killing people with poor excuses in a fictional universe. Damn you, Internet.
I feel saying 'I hate michael bay movies, he sucks as a director' is quite different to describing killing him in cold blood after you listen to him begging for mercy.Nonomori said:I doubt it. She may not have a problem with someone writing an absurd story about it, but that is nowhere near the same thing as condoning actual murder. The truth is much more disturbing. "I want to kill Michael Bay", the exact phrase, 674 results on Google's search. People say/write things like that all the time. Fictionalized real person. It is not rare in parodies or satires. Unfortunately, I'm certain that the words "the systemic problems of sexist depictions of women in the games needs to be stopped" never left Pitchford's mouth.Deadagent said:Were talking about a real person here, not a fictional person a real living breathing human creature.
It's a valid response. I used to not bat an eyelid to these kind of things thinking it's harmless but I guess something triggered me along the way to start reacting. Just that someone felt the need to write that, to take time out to type out those words, spend time thinking 'yeah... I want Randy to die this way' makes me feel bad. I don't like that people think it's an acceptable response for them to have to disliking colonial marines.
To keep this closer to Sarkeesian, I would of figured she might of paused for thought when you consider the hatred that has come her way.

I don't know much about Sarkeesian's case with the exception of some rape/kitchen jokes, but I'm willing to believe that she is no saint and can be insensitive at times. Or maybe she's cool with that kind of criticism.
Pretty much, yes. Of course it is, I searched for an exact six words phrase about killing someone. You can be creative with wordplay and find millions of "death threats" about Michael Bay.Deadagent said:Thats not a full on story and with 674 results it isnt exactly common now is it. You're talking as if that was horrible and I'm still not mad about it. I guess we cannot agree about what is really offensive humour, but as I understand it, the story has a clear critical meaning and was not intended as a hate speech or death threat, or anything that left me disturbed.Deadagent said:Even in satires most of the time it's not under the persons real name even is it's obvious who it is, also you have negleted that it not just a real person dying in the story, it's a real person doing the killing.
You're getting strangely specific here. As I said, doesn't make it right, of course. But saying and writing things like that because of anger or for a cheap laugh is pretty common occurrence. In my opinion, it's much less disturbing in a fictionalized humoristic short story, but maybe we disagree about that.wintercoat said:And how many of those "I want to kill Michael Bay" are fanfictions posted on the blog of the person depicted murdering Michael Bay? Im pointing out the hypocrisy of the situation, when this game hit the interwebs, alot of feminists and gaming journalists lost their minds over this. That you think liking a piece of fan fiction which depicts her killing someone is tantamount to condoning actual murder is laughable. Completely and utterly laughable. Honestly, you lose any credibility you may have had because no sane person capable of following even basic logic through to a somewhat reasonable conclusion could ever make the flying leaps you have to make to come to that one. I honestly have to wonder if you're just trolling because that conclusion is so patently absurd. It's like saying anyone who ever gave a Grand Theft Auto title a positive review condones killing hookers, mass murder, and vehicular homicide.Tenkage said:Easy, by putting it up onto her tumbler, not mentioning anything about the fact SHE KILLS A HUMAN BEING, it is clear she condones it. Whether or not Ms. Sarkeesian is a hypocrite or liking this is open to some debate, but she probably is on some level. Though I'd argue the problem she has with people making a game about beating her up had nothing to do with her kickstarter or the quality of her work, and everything to do with the fact that she was a woman and dared to say that there's some sexism in games and the industry. People would be absolutely right to make that argument by the way, though the key difference between that and this is that absolutely no one would argue that they didn't have the right to make the game just because some people disagree with its contents. Also, no sane person would argue that by making or liking the game, people were advocating beating Ms. Sarkeesian half to death.wintercoat said:Guy makes a shitty flash game where you beat up Anita: "Rabble rabble rabble rabble!!!!!!!!!!"

It's like hypocrisy grew hands and joined the forums.
Then you chose a poor target to try to make that point. Did you follow the quote that I was directly responding to? The OP stated that posting this fanfiction on her blog meant that she was completely okay with murder. I find that to be an absolutely absurd assertion. Do you disagree with me on that point? So to recap:
Beat up Anita in a flash game = Worse than the holocaust
Murder Randy Pitchford in a story = Hilarious
I don't give two shits what other people are arguing. I'm arguing that the same people who are acting like this is no big deal were hootin and hollerin about that "Beat Up Anita" game.Vivi22 said:That you think liking a piece of fan fiction which depicts her killing someone is tantamount to condoning actual murder is laughable. But people are arguing that because she enjoyed a work of fiction she condones murder. This assertion is utterly ridiculous on the face of it, and is the thing that people like myself actually take issue with.
You can feel free to argue that it's in bad taste, that she may be a bit of a hypocrite for liking it, or whatever else you can come up with relating to the work itself and it's value. What you can't argue is that liking it means someone condones violence because that is the most ridiculous thing I think I've heard someone say on these forums in weeks. There is no line of logical thought that will take you from the events that have transpired and that conclusion. If you think there is a logical line of thought that gets you there, you are objectively wrong and I can say that without any amount of exaggeration or hyperbole. It's not something that is a matter of opinion, or which you think and is some unassailable idea because you're just throwing it out as a hypothetical. It is a conclusion which is literally not supported by the facts nor rational thought.
So no, telling some people that they need to lighten the hell up is not hypocrisy. Some people are coming to conclusions which can accurately and objectively be described as completely ridiculous and wrong, and pointing that out is merely the logical, and correct thing to do.
But excellent job completely missing the point of what most of us take issue with in this whole debate.
To be honest, if anyone here does agree with the assertion that posting that fanfiction means they condone murder then they probably aren't worth debating with anymore. If they can somehow follow logic so ridiculous that it takes them to that conclusion then I'm not sure it's possible to reason with them.bluepotatosack said:Then you chose a poor target to try to make that point.
