Look, I'm all for being skeptical of games before they're released, especially games like No Man's Sky, which promise a lot of things that are going to be very difficult to deliver on. And we certainly need to keep our hype in check for games that we don't actually have that much information on.

But on the other hand, we do need to keep our worries about a game a little more in line with what we actually know about the game. Yeah, a lot of trailers focus on pretty environments, but they have outright stated (and I think shown in previews, although I'm not 100% sure) that the game is going to have combat and shit. Will it be any good? Who knows? But I think we have more than enough information to say with confidence that yes, there is going to be more to do than fly around and look at shit.

The devs have stated there will be various activities and goals besides sightseeing, including resource gathering and combat. It's all optional, though. Apparently, you can be anything from an aggressive mercenary to a flat-out pacifist. That's part of the game's appeal for me.

Frankly, I've been wanting a game like this since I was a kid.[footnote]My adolescent self would have wanted it to be set in the Star Wars universe, but hey, beggars can't be choosers.[/footnote] While there have been great open-galaxy games like Elite 2 and Wing Commander: Privateer, they tend to focus more on combat and earning a profit than the pure, simple joy of exploration and discovery. After all, space is the final frontier.

The notion of exploring the (admittedly romanticized and scientifically inaccurate) cosmos and finding wonderous alien worlds strikes a chord with me. With a gorgeous art style and a mind-boggling 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets, No Man's Sky seems like it's quite capable of scratching that itch of mine.

I'm doing my best to curb my enthusiasm, of course. Plenty of game developers have promised the moon to players in the past to no avail. I fully realize that unforseen complications may end up toning the scale back, the procedural generation could result in same-y or borked planets, or the game may end up playing like a piece of shit. For now though, I can't help but be excited.

Yeah, I'm a bit cautious about that game too.

I mean, an Indie dev going full-in on a next gen Space Sim/Exploration game?

That's very ambitious.

I am skeptical of a lot of games before they come out, especially anything that has anything to do with Ubisoft, but with No Man's Sky, I really want it to be good. That being said, we haven't really seen anything new since the game was first revealed at last year's VGAs. Sure, there have been 3 different presentations, but each time it has been pretty much the same thing, just with a different planet setting. Hell, the only thing that I know about the game is that there are planets, colours, wildlife and spaceships. I don't even know what the game is about, and usually they lead with that kind of thing. I understand that they had that flood a few months back that ruined some equipment, and that was bound to slow development, but I am really eager to see some footage with some actual substance and gameplay, not just flying around for about a minute or two. I am still excited for it of course, but yes, I am still skeptical.

I have the same worries. I know there will be space exploration/combat. Also the ability to discover and mine planets. But what's my goal? Is it just flying about and finding resources to upgrade my ship? Someone said finding the center of the universe, but that sounds kinda boring. I'm hoping they allow planet colonization, making me attached to all these random planets in the galaxy.

I'm pretty sure they've already stated in interviews that you can build shelters and stuff. I read those interviews when they announced the game last year though, so my memory may not be perfect. If anybody is curious about what they'll be able to do in the game, maybe they should actually look at the information that's readily available.

Other than that, any skepticism leveled at the game is the same I would expect of any ambitious video game in development. Personally, I remain optimistic for this since indie developers seem to compromise their ideals less often than AAA developers. When you couple that with the funding they have, we have little reason to actually be worried about the state of the game at this moment in time.

I actually had a thread about this, back during the LAST trailer and following 'What's The Pooooint Of It?' stream, trying to explain based on what I knew. I think I shall update it based on what we know now, and then give it a bump back up. =D

Meh, there's no need to worry, look at Minecraft (unless that's not your cup of tea, which I can understand).

Plus they did say they'll give players stuff to do, so they'd be crazy not to.

Not really, there are games like this around already by indie devs like the Evochron games that are open world sandboxes with planetary landing/atmospheric transition. Procedurally generated games like this have been a thing for more than 20 years as well, No Mans sky is only slightly more ambitious than stuff already around.

If anything I would say they might be reaching to far with the multiplayer, the game itself should be doable with enough talent.

Suspicious? No.
Curious? Yes.

I really like the look of what I've seen so far and want to know more about what the actual moment to moment gameplay will be like, including any sort of over arching goals. If it turns out to just be fly around, explore different planets and see cool stuff I can't say I'll be too disappointed but the HUD they are using just seems to imply more traditional gameplay elements are going to be in use (which could be bot good and bad).

When a dev goes "EVERYTHING IS PROCEDURAL!!!" I tend to dial that down to "Everything is governed by an RNG, and technical limitations prevent us from delivering on truly random forms of gameplay or world and creature design".

With that in mind, I'm expecting something pretty and versatile, but not something that'll blow my mind.

Im not suspicious at all of it. I am very excited for the game, but I rarely buy games day one anymore. So I shall wait until initial impressions are out before taking the plunge. If it is great, great, if its not, then I won't buy it. Problem solved.

Skeptical, yes, but also looking for my old 'I want to believe' poster.

I'm excited and hoping it can live up to even a sliver of the promises being made.

I do believe in faeries! I do, I do!

No Man's Sky, though? Yeah, I doubt that'll turn out all that well.

They keep saying there's more to this game than just exploring procedurally generated planets but unless they actually show these then I'm going to be very, very skeptical. They've had 5 big events showing off this game (VGX, E3, Gamescom, The Game Awards, PSX) yet the trailers have all been exactly the same in terms of the gameplay they've shown. Honestly I'm very much expecting this to have more failed promises than a Molyneux game.

I'm extremely skeptical, actually. What they're promising to deliever would need more than a small indie team to complete properly, and seeing as they are just a small indie team there's no way the game is going to be as expansive and large as they're saying and as the demos/trailers are showing.
