Is anyone really THAT surprised about Colonial Space Marines?

Yes, but I didn't realize just how many other studios had a hand in creating it, even if its just what Randy Pitchford said about it, saying Gearbox made roughyl three-quarters of the game. Of course, this particular interview only came out a few days before the release of the title. Gearbox definitely had too much on their plate, I mean, just look at what they've done since 2006, when they took on Colonial Marines. They bought the Duke Nukem IP, pushed out DNF rather cheaply for a buck, and maybe to gauge market interest, they made both Borderlands games, Borderlands DLC, I believe two or three Brothers in Arms games, and most likely started development on Brothers in Arms Furious Four (now just Furious Four), all while mostly ignoring this. Quite frankly, I'm surprised SEGA hasn't sued them yet, even just five days after the release of Colonial Marines. I mean, they were about to anyways.

I guess I could say I'm mostly surprised because I assumed that they weren't so stupid as to spread themselves so thin. Colonial Marines is for Gearbox as to what that one chore you hate, whichever it is, that you have to do, and always put doing it off for as long as possible. Quite frankly they just shouldn't have made Borderlands 2, or at least, not with the amount of manpower they were using. They should have fufilled their obligations and made Colonial Marines their main project. From the beginning of 2011, but its clear that they didn't, regardless of whether you believe any of these anonymous posters on the internet.

Plotwise, its utterly pointless, non-sensical, and an insult to your intelligence. I don't know who was in charge of it, but it seems...

that the entire point of the game was to retcon Hicks' admittedly needless death from Alien 3. I guess 20th Century Fox wanted to bring Hicks back so they could make another movie or something, rather than start with a fresh character, which in my opinion is a mistake for many reasons unrelated to how the plot plays out itself. They didn't even do it so that it could makes sense. I literally could've done it better. The plot of the game was written out by somebody thirty minutes they needed to present it - it doesn't even have the quality of a last minute all-nighter essay. The game raises dozens, if not hundreds of questions, from the revelation of him being there - and then it gives you a middle finger when Hicks says something along the lines of "Thats a story for another time". Seriously, 20th Century Fox, hire me, please! I don't even need to be paid. I'll do it for free, it'll be cheaper than that methhead you must've hired to write it. Did you hire the guy who wrote Mass Effect 3?

So yeah, the plot was awful, but to be honest, I probably should've been expecting it, especially after there was so much tampering with the Alien 3 script (which I still think turned out good, but point stands).
Yes, it did come as a surprise to me, but it's one of the few franchises I have this weakness for, normally I would have alarm bells going off about a game that went through what this did, but the fan in me was like "I don't care, I just want more."

To do with your spoiler tag
But he does explain why he wasn't in hyper sleep etc, the bit he says that about is who the body that they thought was his belonged to. I know it's kinda lazy writing, but the story made sense, it was just predictable, simple and a bit stupid.

That said, I'm still enjoying the multiplayer :)

I thought it was going to be fairly average. I was surprised at just how bad it turned out to be though.

I wasn't surprised because a friend of mine who works as a bug tester for Sega told me it was crap. He's the kind of guy who buys every major game that comes out, so being told that a game wasn't worth buying was a pretty strong indication of how bad it'd be to me.

I find it odd that people on here are more than willing to forgive Gearbox for two terrible games, but Bioware makes 3 average games at worst and you might be forgiven for thinking they had invoked the power of Satan and permanently tarnished every last gamebox with the demons' seed, for the level of bile they took.

If we're operating on a three strike system for companies, I expect to see mass riots and possible lynching of the creative staff if Gearbox ever falls out of line again.

If you're going to jump on the 'This game is crap' bandwagon, you could at least put enough thought into it to get the name right before you make terrible examples.

I mean really. We've all seen the commercials. We've all seen the game-play footage that looks dated even by 2004's standards. When I see a commercial with clunky animations and ugly, well... everything. I tend to take that more seriously than a demo released by the company.

Am I the only one who thought this game was going to be crap from the start? There must be others who were turned off by those dated-looking commercials.
I love when people jump on the bashing bandwagon to claim "they were already know" or "it was that obvious" etc...

I think there's a point you are skipping...
Yes, the commercials never claimed the game would be graphical wonder or have ultra textures like Batman Arkham City or Battlefield 3 (for PC of course),
but the commercials did show a great atmosphere, intelligent aliens and thrilling combat scenes.

The problem of the game is not textures, is not graphics, nor being dated.
The problem of the game is this:
There is a game with enough potential to be an amazing Aliens game with horrific atmosphere. They showed that they can do such atmosphere with their demos.
Instead of a such game, they removed every element from it, and gave us a half assed unfinished pre-production.

Of course, stopping, cancelling and then restarting a project, and outsourcing most of the work to small developers can turn it into Frankenstein's monster.
However the studio behind the game was Gearbox. The franchise they used was Aliens. Even the demo and commercials showed Gearbox want to do a really good game and could do great things for the game.
End result became less than %25 of their commercials and demos. Therefore gamers highly dissapointed.

Watch this if you want:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lGXDM3LGnk

Alleging ideas like "Am I the only one, surely there must be others" is too silly. It is just egoistical, and just for jumping on the bandwagon and trying to get some profit from the bashing trend...
Don't do it.

i actually like the game. I play it on te pc and the controls work well for me. The gun wheel and upgrades are a bit meh but i'm willing to overlook it. Its a fps so saying the story sucks isn't really an argument for me. You have a couple of fps that have a good story but they are overshadowed by the number of fps that don't.

It isnt bugged out to the point of being unplayable (on the pc). graphics are fine. I wouldn't introduce the game to my parents because it is so fucking pretty but it gets the job done. Voice acting is meh but ive heard worse. It is not a gem that I will look back on with nostalgia in ten years but I can have fun with it on those lazy sunday afternoons. And its still better then avp II.

I thought it would end up being OK-ish but over hyped.
Checking your movement dot sensor for closing in dots before aliens appear is a pretty cool mechanic you can do a lot with.

The more they love 'em, the more they'll hate them when they feel betrayed. Bioware had a fanbase which was completely obsessed with the games they made, but as soon as those games stopped being the ones they wanted, they fell on them like rabid dogs. This is pure speculation, but I'd guess fewer people who enjoyed Borderlands started start posting on the forums and obsessing and nitpicking over every single detail, unlike a Bioware game, which has to withstand this treatment of extreme critique after every single release.

What I'm trying to say is, powerful love easily turns into powerful hate, and since Gearbox didn't have to quite frankly endure the same adoration, the fallout when they fuck up is also smaller.

I think both companies are getting more crap than they deserve (Yes. I am defending Bioware despiste the trauma they caused on me with Dragon Age:Origins. I dont know what is wrong with me), just 2 or 3 bad games shouldt really mean they are the worst of the worst, cmon on...

From what I saw (Gameinformer a few years has been waiting for this game) I thought it didn't look good and I am NOT surprised.

Every screenshot and trailer I've seen for the PC version of Aliens: Colonial Marines looks absolutely gorgeous on a technical level. Maybe the console versions look like ass, I don't know.
At a point where they're using PC footage to advertise the consoles, I think you're being a bit absurd. Especially if you consider the actual game footage "gorgeous."

Unless this is a new use of the word I'm not familiar with, like how everything these days average or better is "amazing" because we live in a land of hyperbole and a desire for everything to be the best. But then, calling ACM gorgeous is on par in terms of hyperbolic statements with calling it "dated even by 2004's standards."

If I had known that Gearbox were the ones behind Duke Nukem Forever, I would have expected this. Thankfully, I never preorder anything, so I just feel disappointed instead of feeling robbed of $60.

I'll just play through AVP2 and Alien Resurrection, and pretend that A:CM never existed.

Related Topic: I just found a review for Alien Resurrection where the reviewer's main criticism for the game is that it uses the dual analog sticks for the primary controls in an FPS. He closes the review saying that people would be better off waiting for the recently announced Aliens: Colonial Marines. This review was posted in October of 2000.

I was actually planning on buying the game EVENTUALLY. It was on my list of "Games to buy since I'll spend what remains of my game money on Metal Gear Rising Revengeance" list. Featuring games such as: Bioshock Infinite, Alien CM, and The Last of Us. That way I could get opinions for weeks while I'm busy hackin n slashin.

But like I said, it "was" on the list.
OT: More or less surprised. This was Sega and Gearbox behind it, but it was the Aliens license, so I don't blame the people who bought it.

Another small detail:

Just before the launch of Borderlands 2 Gearbox called themselfs mid-tier developers, and people are suddenly shocked that when they were working on 2 AAA games at the same time one of them sucked and wasnt actually even made by them.

I fucking loled hard, first at the fact that dual analog sticks for aiming and movie were poorly received back then and now everything NEEDS them, second at the fact that people were actually expecting something good out of a game that has been in development hell for more then 10 years.

I honestly fought that the game had been announced in like 2008 (at most) or something, I never payed that much attention to this game.
