You mean, you don't think those guys should be calling the shots? Yeah, I agree with that.
Can't tell if really good counter-pun or serious..

Yes, I'm not exactly comfortable with some guy with a bow pulling the strings.
Is that Dora the Explorer?

If it is, I'm bolting it.
I'd say it's her, but it's a shot in the dark.

But anyway, if you're with me, enlisting others, so we can fight these archers who menace in the media. Quite frankly, I quiver at the thought of them.

Sweet Jesus... I saw Hunger Games a while back, I regret that immensely, but more importantly, Holy shit you're right, Neither of her hands are doing anything remotely correct in terms of archery. The hand on the string looks like she's got 3 fingers underneath (which is all well and good despite the fact that the pinkie isn't meant to be one of the 3) but what the hell is she doing with her thumb and index finger touching the top of the darn arrow? And her hand on the actual bow isn't much better, she's guaranteed to send the arrow way off course.
Ha you think that's bad, try learning how to use a sword or a spear, then watch a medieval history type thingy, even good one's become cringe worthy. It kinda spoil's the experience a bit if your watching this ultimate saviour of the world/realm/princess or bacon sandwiches and all your can think is this man is just looks ridiculous I could tear him to pieces with a gauntlet and a dagger.

On the whole archery thing, can't say I think it's new, but there again I grew up in Nottinghamshire so the whole robin hood thing spoils my judgement
I know what you mean, watching how the character swings their sword or thrusts a spear is sometimes terrible. watching a character using a sword and shield is the most painful, you watch as they just put their entire body into a single swing and you think "What the bloody hell is he doing? Openings galore Huzzah! Either that or watching a person wielding a Claymore/Zweihander/Other Swords larger than a Bastard Sword. They don't seem to grasp the importance of the weight inherent with those weapons, or the ability to maim or disarm an opponent with a powerful blow.

Haven't got much knowledge at all on spears though, all I really know about them is to optimise the advantage in reach you have and to make sure you keep it positioned in a way that you aren't going to tangle with the spear/pike of the guy on your right or left while advancing in a line.

We could try to, but it would be a bit of a hit and miss.

Damnit I'm running out here..

Well, we must always aim high.

(Me, too. Maybe we should stop before we shoot ourselves in the foot.)

You do realise that hardly anyone today knows the slightest thing about archery technique right?

So while can understand people who do practice archery getting a little bothered by mistakes shown on film. But surely they must realise that it's never going to be a priority for film makes to spend base their casting of a role on an actors archery ability. something that only a most minute part of their audience is going to notice and that part shouldn't really care.

And regardless of how skilled any of those actors are, it's obviously going to help bring a lot more people into the hobby.
Yeah but there's a certain degree of care that should be given, even if it's not perfect. Take, for example, the pictures listed in the OP. When the chick releases that arrow in the first picture she is going to shred her hand from the fletchings, the arrow is going to go maybe 3 feet, and it is going to go in a random direction. The rest are, at least, passable in terms of technique. Not perfect but not terrible.

The problem is there needs to be some degree of accuracy because there ARE people that will mimic the film exactly. Look at all the tools that pick up a gun after playing CoD and have never held one before. Half of them almost kill someone.

I don't think Hawkeye's a particularly good example. He's always used a bow and arrow in the comics, it just so happens the Avengers came out this year.
No, that was the original Green Lantern.

But yeah, eh. Maybe a bit more archery than "normal", but not that big a difference.

Maybe.

Fairly recently, my club has been overran with new people although not many of them were happy of having to wait to collect the arrows.

Um..... archery instructor here, few things. Three underneath is a technique that is actually taught, not that often mind you, but is a basic string technique. The pinkie, well, sometimes it's on the string, sometimes it's not. Also something that some archers need to do if they have problems pulling back the bowstring.

As for the other hand, lacking a notch or arrow rest, you have to use your own fingers to guide the arrow, this if from experience. I've shot like that fine with a 40lb bow that didn't have an arrow rest and no notch. Takes some adjustment and practice but that's what archers used to do most the time. They may have a slight notch to make it easier to keep it in place and standardize their shots some but it was a necessary technique.

I never noticed that ô_o I've been arching, wait no... Archering, done archery, arc- SHOT ARROWS, for about 10 years now and it is cool for it to get some light. Plus, I love shooting arrows in FPS. Archery in Skyrim was a lot of fun. They could do more of that.
Yeah, it was awesome, and at first, I dismissed it based on how incredibly useless archery was in oblivion, but soon I came to realise that archery is actually one of the most powerful skills in the game, and now most of my characters use it to some extent, even my tanking orc loves to "shoot da pointy stiks at da humies", especially with dawnguard adding crossbows into the mix.

I dunno, archery has been cool for a while, especially in videogames. Hell, it was even cool in the turok reboot. Maybe it's more that bow-weilding protagonists have become cool in less-geek-orientated media too recently.

Oh. My. God...

At this rate, Native Americans might actually become the next space marines!

Gotta love Turok logic. "Sup dude, you're an Indian. Clearly you'll kill better with a bow!"

My apologies for the inaccuracies, just basing most of it what I was taught over several years of archery, but yeah I only have experience with the one kind, that was with Recurve bows that had an arrow rest, I was taught the 3 fingers underneath but the pinkie was kinda useless in it. and with the hand on the actual bow, i'm still kind of confused about her index finger placement, it seems like her fingers would be touching some of the feather(right word to use for it?)

It's not like there's only one way to hold a bow. There's lots of different techniques in the world.
Edit, nm, refer to BabySinclair. Clearly he's seen it before.

Archery has been a part of our media for quite a while, and with good reason. There's nothing particularly new about this trend.
It hasn't really been as mainstream as it is now though, especially thanks to the Hunger Games and The Avengers.

My own archery club did say that archery is getting a lot more popular the last few months. I haven't asked why they think that is, but I wouldn't be surprised if they point to popular media for an explanation.

As for me, I wanted to start with archery way before The Avengers or anything like that. I just picked a lousy time to actually start.

Archery's always been a thing. It's been around for thousands of years with a cult following.

I think archery is awesome and love that its getting more attention.
Archery does actually have some uses in modern day combat, besides being silent, it also penetrates kevlar a lot easier than bullets. While I doubt its actually being used by anyone because of the massive drawbacks (way harder to learn, tends to be quite huge, cumbersome to carry, only one shot at the time, not as long range, etc), its still cool to see in movies and games.

Technically speaking, archery isn't a new thing... they've been around for a couple thousand years *Bud-dum, ch!*
Nonetheless, bows look cool. They're simple, they're antique, and unique--many people can shoot guns, but how many can shoot arrows? That's right, not a lot (Unless you're playing Mount and Blade on Siege...annoying buggers are everywhere). Bows take practice to work correctly and hit a target, while you can fire a gun incorrectly but still hit a guy. There's this arch in archery, while bullets are straight projectiles. As for the characters themselves, it makes them look more elegant in comparison to a gun, as it's a quiet, accuracy-based weapon instead of a possible spray and pray.

This guy was doing it before Bows in FPS games were cool. Don't even have to photoshop the hipster glasses.
