Yeah... I'm not buying the "entirely new show" thing. We live in a time and age where we're encouraged to throw overboard everything we know about anything to quickly appreciate (i.e. consume) its newest recycled form. No disrespect for MLP or its fanbase, I'm just not a fan of revisionism of any kind. I read about MLP and all I can think of is this:
I agree with you somewhat. Recycling old ideas over and over can lead to a creative dearth. However it is nice to use old ideas as a jumping off point to create great franchises. For instance, Battlestar Galactica, and Nolan's Batman series. Though sometimes, it doesn't work out so well: V.
I can't speak for anyone but I like the new My Little Pony because it's good. It's just that simple. It has nothing to do with it's history or the fanbase. The show itself is good. End of story.
Other shows I like: My Life as a Teenage Robot, Stargate Universe, 24, House, Awake, FlashForward, Doctor Who, et al. Funnily enough, with the exception of Doctor Who, all those shows are off the air.
Who cares what came before!? My Little Pony has interesting characters and a compelling plot (most of the time but I think it's best to ignore this season for now). It has nothing to do with the branding. Make all the characters gerbils, and it would be just as compelling... possibly more so.
Honestly, if the only reason you're avoiding the show is because the franchise originated in the 80s, you're needlessly crippling yourself. I'm not saying you have to watch it, because I'm not that much of an asshole. I just think that's a really bad reason.
