Won't know if it's going downhill until Black Ops releases with Treyarch now in charge of the series. Although if Activision's track record continues to decline as being total pricks as a publisher, then it could easily nosedive fast.

This thread is doomed to fail actually.

MW1 was a good game, loved it. MW2 just plain sucked someone's asshole dry and devoid of any actual fun or noteworthy singleplayer campaign.
You're quite wrong about this. If you disregard the story and focus purely on the gameplay, Modern Warfare 2 had some of the best single player levels in the series. Wolverines, the Gulag, Contingency and Of Their Own Accord were all brilliant.

The original Modern Warfare was a very succinct take on the nature of modern war, but with the sequel IW obviously decided to forsake any emotional depth for a more glitzy and action packed campaign. Enjoy the single player for what it is.
The things you mentioned above are exactly what I consider a singleplayer devoid of any fun or quality. I am someone for a more narrative approach. MW1 handled it perfectly from the beginning to the end. MW2 on the other hand offered a weak excuse of a 'story' just to guide me to shoot more pixels without any depth.

But each to their own I suppose.
I'm not so picky when it comes to first person shooters. I was disappointed with IW's entirely OTT approach to the MW2 campaign at first, but at the base level the single player was largely a lot fun and filled with a lot of new concepts.

A great narrative is always welcome, of course, but for a 7 hour action game i can overlook that if the gameplay is at least engaging and interesting, and for me Modern Warfare 2 was.

You rely to much on the story. You've forgotten that most games like CoD and Halo thrive on their multi-player, and that's what their going to put their effort into. Or maybe it's because you've played the game to much. Just buy the new game and see how you feel then.

MW2 was the first CoD that appealed to me. In my opinion, it's only just gotten good.

But yeah, I thought it went downhill after Cod 4. Witch was the peak of the series. Cod 5 had a fun nazi zombie mode but the rest was meh, mediocre campaign. MW2 was just bland and unimaginative.

For a second I thought someone necro'd an ancient thread. I don't want to be a dick, but another COD hate thread 'it used to be better', seriously?

They threw away the realism and put in lots of explosions. Also, the developers got greedy and stupid.

I thought all the CODs up to MW2 were at pretty good. It's just that MW2 failed SOOOOOO hard that the integrity of the COD series was left sorta destroyed (to me anyway). I've just drawn a line under MW2 and said "if Black Ops fails even half as much as MW2 no more COD for me"

1. Game series starts as a PC exclusive, gets very positive reception although isn't particually memorable

2. Company releases a sequal, still good but franchise is getting stale

3. Company Releases an innovative sequal that kills WW2 shooters while creating and amazing experiance with innovative multiplayer that ends 6 years of halo's rain as king of Console FPSs

4. ???

5. Profit

6. RUINED FOREVER

Going downhill? Sure, after that mess of a game, modern warfare 2. On paper though, Black ops looks set to redeem Call Of Duty a bit. But I still suspect that the community will find a way to wreck it.

COD used to be a premium single player series for the PC, What went wrong? First the shift from premium single player game to multi-player game, this allowed the developer to skimp on content and was effectively the end of the original COD franchise.
That alone is a massive blow but it wasn't the deathblow, the deathblow came when the focus shifted from PC to console... ruined.

They're trying too hard. Call of Duty 2 is one of the best of the series, because of its simplicity. Call of Duty 4 found a good equallibrium between simpal game play, and complex story shock and awe. An addictive multiplayer that the series had been working on perfecting since the beginning didnt hurt either

Right. Care to explain to me why changing focus made such a big difference. Because last time I checked, a poorly made game is going to suffer on any platform, elitist attitude or not.
