So I generally try to avoid doing this like the freaking plague, which is to heavily speculate about a game that is yet to come out. Because a) if I'm wrong I'll look a bit dumb, and b) I'll be bummed out when the game comes out and my ideas won't correlate with the actual plot. However, with the latest trailer for The Last of Us 2 dropping, things have started to click in my head. And I think I might have an idea where things are going.
This is mainly contained to the cult that seems to be at the centre of every trailer we've seen yet. First time knowing there was a cult I was a bit disappointed, because the post-apocalypse and cults generically go hand in hand. But there is one way this cult would make perfect sense in this universe. Humanity is struggling to survive, what with the infection and people killing eachother for safety and resources. I don't think it's crazy to say that at this rate humanity will slowly but surely go extinct. So what if this cult is violently dedicated to preserve the human species in the simpliest way one can; by procreation. Where the only human lives they value are the ones that can reproduce, and all the ones that don't are seen as wasting precious resources simply by existing and not adding to the birth rate. Hence why these individuals get the noose + disembowel treatment. This would include people who are sterile and maybe also people who don't want to have sex with the opposite... sex, i.e. gay people. Or maybe they deal with gay people in a less perminent, but still horrible way. Since I also doubt artificial insemination is a viable option anymore in this world.
This would give the cult's existence and actions some logical motivation, instead of them just being evil crazies. Maybe that girl Ellie smooches with gets nabbed and killed (or worse) by this cult along with several other people from Tommy's compound for this reason, and Ellie goes on a murder rampage to kill every last one 'm. Not just because they killed this girl, but because they killed them in part because of their sexual orrientation, and are traveling the country doing the same to other people.
And judging from the latest trailer there even seems to be an emphasis on gender in this cult. The goons seen thus far have been a mix of both men and women, with the men all sporting a bald head and the women having this sort of Princess Lea braid thing going on. And in the second trailer we see that the asian woman who pretty excessively gets her elbow smashed has this same hairdo, and the asian kid that saves her has a bald head. And apparently that kid is transgender in the game and is played by an actor that is transgendered. So this might serve as a subplot about this kid being forced into a gender role he or she doesn't feel comfortable with.
I've even sort of had a theory that maybe this cult arose from what used to be the Fireflies, after Joel laid waste to their headquarters, and killed the only medically trained people they have along with their leader. So that ontop of Joel screwing up one of the rare chances for a cure for humanity, he also unwittingly created this ruthless cult. That might be stretching it though, but it's the only way as of yet that I can think of including Joel and more importantly his past actions into the plot.
So what do you think, is this just really bad speculation, or am I on to something?
