Is every fighting game like this?

I really couldn't say. I've only managed to get online once (not even a ranked match) and I was lucky enough to find a group who could kick my ass without even spamming. I beat the game with every character (ie: unlocked everything in the gallery) and got the achievement for getting through 180 missions in mission mode. I thought I had a chance but out of about 20 online matches (unranked) I managed to win exactly 1.

I suck at fighting games...even when I try spamming an attack out of frustration I get countered and end up dead in seconds.

These are my thoughts on fighting games; there are spammers who are bad and then there are the button mashers which are even worse and don't know the controls. Although I'll admit I'm really one of the button mashers xD. Anyway, on the point of fighting games, I think they're really all the same. Even though all games of a certain genre have the same core and a few special tweaks, the fighting games are where it's most prominent. 4 buttons to move, 4 buttons to attack. And that's it. Maybe one game has combos and another has interchangeable characters but it's really the same. Now someone please prove me wrong so I can give fighting games more credit.

Both of you, unfair (at the moment, mostly directed Space Spoons). OP's first fighting game ever and had the insane misfortune of meeting a spammer on his first match. You can't say finding a way around is simple and that he "deserved to lose." While I agree that spamming is a perfectly viable tactic if you want to win (I play Lambda-11), I still hold back when I meet players Level 15 or under unless they start kicking my ass. I don't want to turn them away from the game before they get the chance to get better. I want to see new blood that can eventually put up an exciting fight and hopefully surpass my fairly weak play (PSR is floating around the 110-112 range and won't go any higher).
I understand your point of view, but taking it easy on a new player won't do that new player any favors down the line. The simple fact of it is that most people who play fighting games online don't pull punches. It's better for him to learn that now and adjust his tactics appropriately than it is for him to gain a false perception of his own skill level that will make his inevitable defeat that much harder to handle.

For what it's worth, I think you're right, it's not fair. But those are the breaks, that's the way the fighting game community has developed; it's not friendly to newcomers who can't develop a thick skin. Personally, I'm just grateful we're living in a day and age when you can play with real people, get destroyed, and not feel completely ashamed about it, whereas in the old days, you'd get laughed right out of the arcade if you couldn't bring the skills to pay the bills.

Definitely agree to that last part. I may disagree ever so slightly about your opinion of not holding back, but I see where you're coming from. I still wouldn't bring the "deserve to lose" line on a newbie though. Not really calling you out on it. I just feel like I have to say it.

Edit: reading that all back, I'm realizing that there are way too many I's

Spamming is a legitimate tactic, such as it is. While it's usefulness greatly depends on the game and character (try spamming in Guilty Gear and see what happens), it can still be a viable part of a character's game plan.

There are ways to get around it. It all depends on your options versus your opponent's. Here's a free Sage Tip: Captain America's Charging Star can completely tear through projectiles. Someone pulls out a super version, respond in kind with Hyper Charging Star. Problem solved (for the moment at least).

If something as minute as that is getting you flustered, then you may need to put the game down for a little bit... or use the tactic yourself.

Whoa, easy there young Padawan. I said nothing about him "deserving to lose". I have my own thoughts on that which I'll kindly keep to myself.

I'm just saying that coming across a "spammer" is inevitable, especially in a game such as this. Even more so since the game isn't even a month old and so there's still a veritable mountain of tactics just itching to be revealed. Sure, fighting spammers is annoying, but if you can't do anything about it despite your best efforts, you can't do anything it. Get up, brush your shoulders off, find something else that works or works better, and show those spammers what's really good.

If not, then stop for a bit before you end like a friend of mine who launched his arcade stick at his dresser (3 guesses as to what became of that).

There are spammers in all the fighting games I can think of, the effectiveness of spamming varies from game to game, in my experience after a certain level of skill spammers can quite easily be beaten.

But for low to mid skill level players it is a pain in the ass.

The VS. Capcom series have always been like that.
Play Street Fighter, or BlazBlue instead.

I did that through the arcade mode to get achievements ..
I don't think I'd use that approach online though, it wouldn't be very fun.

The only players that lose to single move spam are the ones who don't know how to play. Sorry, but its true. Low block advancing guard, learn it. Its a very basic move.

I'll agree that in low levels of play (meaning a match with a couple of new players) spamming flurry moves is a little to effective. Just practice your guard timing.

It just gets on my nerves when you have a good game like MvC3 and people just up and decide the game is broken because they don't bother to learn it.

This is one of the things that slightly annoys me about Tekken 6. Since Tekken has a juggle system, they decided to make 6 very juggle-centric for some reason and you get jugglers all the time online. It's a valid tactic but I suck at juggles so lose all the time online.

Spammers though...they're just cheap and frustrating. There are some really good tactics against them, counters are a good start. I would say utilise the sidestep...but MvC3 is a 2D fighter.

*is not biased against 2D fighters at all, nooo*

I know. That one was directed at Space Spoons who's comment was a bit more rough than yours. Sorry for the confusion.
