My fellow gamers!

Fear not, for gaming should not die!

Gaming can save itself by going to space!

Imagine playing video games about space IN SPACE!

I think games are trying too hard to challenge the player with poor designs hidden behind graphics and physics. We have characters that are shallow and unbelievable compared to the wonderful stuff we had in the SNES and PSX era. It feels like games these days just don't know what they're supposed to do anymore. They try so hard to gather as many gamers/fans/people as they can, sacrificing gods knows what in order to pick them up.

I think gaming today just isn't anywhere near as appealing as it was 12 years ago. We've got way too many FPS games, lackluster action games, and only a couple of semi-decent adventure games. You see hardly any of the classic puzzlers or strategy games and if you do it's either a casual game or something that obscure that no one will know about it.

As Yahtzee said once before, everyone is ignoring the gems and going for the mainstream garbage we're being fed today. The days of games as art feels like it's being buried under a massive mound of mediocre games that have about as much quality as a 5 year old's picture of their family. Cute as it may be, it's still nothing compared to the Mona Lisa's we were playing back in the older days.

Well..unless they start making games more challenging then the system isn't going anywhere, no a days it seems that games are hyped up so much..when you get it you don't have anything to
be exited about...but i mean the next gen era only just started...and it is like the 3rd generation of gaming.... and there aren't any MMO's that can stand up against WOW...

Think about
Next gen just started
SONY is slowly dying
Microsoft is now going toe to toe with nintendo...i think when the console war is over...we will have another generatoin of gaming?
3rd generation? That would mean gaming started at the PS1? In my view, that's when gaming hit its prime. In gameplay, anyway...

And if anything, I see it as Sony and Microsoft going toe to toe, and after the PS3's poor start, Sony have now shot past Microsoft in the ratings, and quality games. In Nintendo's words; "Let them have their console war". They are their own style of gaming.
No the first gen started when we where using pixel gaming..second was the ps1 3d... then the ps2 and xbox..and now the next gen..so i guess this is the forth then sorry my mistake
Nope. If you get technical, this is the seventh generation of gaming.
Haha, I don't think many people saw the sarcasm in my comment... I knew the generation we are currently in, I just didn't want to call the guy out on his mistake. I hate doing that ;)
I love doing that!
Why are the names of the people you have quoted wrong?

Seriously? Anyone else noticed this?
He's gone and changed them. It's not terribly difficult. It's a bit silly though. I only noticed because my name was in the quote tower. He could have at least made them funny ;/
Never been a fan of the S&G I'm afraid. ;D You should stop trying, I doubt you'll get anywhere which will make me laugh at this point in the wee hours of the morning.

In a sense, this is more like the 7th gen of consoles.
1. Original Pong machine
2. Atari 2600 and the like
3. Dreamcast/NES
4. Sega CDi, SNES
5. PS1, Nintendo 64
6. XBOX, PS2, Nintendo Gamecube
7. XBOX 360, PS3, Nintendo Wii
Chronology may be a tad off, but this is CLOSE to right.
dreamcast/NES?

what weird alternate dimension do you live in?

is there space available? rent cheap? good schools?
Haha! excellent.

I think gaming is dying only as a fad. Like movies and popular literature, it's becoming a way of life that defines people. There are cinephiles, biblophiles, and now...uh...

Gameing-o-philes. Yeah.

That's why I think the games are becoming ultra-developed, majestic piles of sameyness. Back in the old days people just wanted something fun to play, so an Italian plumber could stomp evil mushrooms to defeat a giant anthropomorphic turtle dinosaur and we just rode the crazy wave. But now it's gotta be all serious and in-depth to justify the $60 price tag and 40+ hours of gameplay or the "gamers" will throw a hissy fit.

On the Internet. Because gameing-o-philes don't like confrontation with real people because you can't reload and try again if you mess up. Unlike in our precious, precious games. Which we worship. And make love to.

It's just like a romantic relationship, really. Now that it's gotten all serious and expensive, it's not quite as fun as it once was.

Unlike said relationship, though, it's actually gotten prettier as it's aged. Which is why games are better than girls.

I'm going to go climb in a jug of whiskey now.

I know, I stopped trying a while ago. But the sport of altering quote towers is quite fun.
Made me laugh. Mission complete.

Dying fad. Nope, not at all. Gaming however, has gone more mainstream though. The Wii's success points to that. Sadly that also seems to mean that there is a lot more crap being made as well.

Still plenty of great games being made though. Just looking at this months launch lineup proves that!

UK Thinks it will outsell DVD's and CD's in '08. I doubt it, but it seems like Gaming is here to stay. [http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/55754]

You know, people were saying the EXACT same thing in the Atari days

It always appears to me that the main-streaming of anything, including videogames, ruins much of what's enjoyable about said things.

I'm hoping the same thing will happen with gaming as for art. Once artists where able to achieve photo realism in their art. They started to go for abstract and interesting. Will the same thing happen for gaming? Or will games continue to try to be just like halo?

Well since things all work in somewhat of a circle, I do believe the another dark age for video games could emerge. Not as bad as the first one, but if this dark age becomes apparent to developers you will probably notice an extreme drop in casual games and a rise in games more focused hardcore and serious gamers.

This can be a mixed bag because I'm sure that people will eventually become overwhelmed with the return of hardcore games and as such may give them mixed reviews. Then again another path is that people can smarten up and realize that realism (though the original goal to make such advanced systems,) is not always the best option to choose from. This goes for graphics and physics, people will always play games to escape reality to some extent so you have to at least dramatize certain aspects to remain interesting.

Another thing is, that as games get produced, originality will become harder and harder to obtain. I do believe that gaming is to an extent a sum of its past, but simply improving on it nowadays will have you being called out as derivative.
