I think over time the Halo series is really losing its appeal. I could name about 5 games right away with the same premise of an out-door shooter with a loosely relivant story: Haze, Far Cry, Crysis (basically every game made by Crytech), Lost Planet, and Just Cause 2
Was Halo ever anything but generic...? We're talking absurdly basic "space marines" plot here...

This thread can't end well..

For me Halo is 'meh'. Nothing more, nothing less. I don't care if it's generic or not.
Sure, it's fun to play it with friends on splitscreen, but then again, I've only played Halo games 3 to 4 times.

Which at the time was pretty new.

Halo is just one of several FPS's, along with Goldeneye, that made this particular genre accessible to those who were console gamers. That's it. It didn't really bring anything new to the table, but what it brought worked, and worked well. So well, in fact that everyone started making Halo killers.

In 2001?

They weren't particularly new when DOOM did it in 1993...

No, Halo is not generic, nor is it average.

I've yet to see another "mediocre" Console FPS that offers the same level of awesome story telling and universe that Halo has.

Halo Killers ruined the genre for everyone.
I disagree, I enjoyed quite a lot of said Halo killers.
I mean, sure, Halo 3 is probably better than most of them, the most competent example being Killzone 2, but both games are enjoyable in its own right.
Do WoW killers ruin the MMO genre?
Maybe but I am so tired of this crap.

"...we were trying to craft a Halo-killer, you know a product that would squarely go after what Bungie built with our partners at Crytek. So the Crysis 2 product is spectacular, very high-end, and is going to be a multi-year franchise," said Gibeau.
Just so tired.

Bungie has fucked up Halo once and for all and dont get me started because that list would be even longer than the biggest post on escapist!

No, other games are being Halo clones, which make Halo look generic by comparison. Don't forget that it was Halo: Combat Evolved that revolutionized Fist Person Shooters forever.
To be honest it didn't revolutionize FPS games, Doom, Quake, and Unreal Tournament were doing that long before Halo existed.

You can argue that it revolutionized console shooters and i would agree with you.

Halo started the trend of "accessibility" over all other concerns, a concept that is killing gaming one day at a time.
Wait... "Killing gaming"? Do you realise that the Wii sells more than the 360 and PS3 combined? Accessibility is certainly not killing gaming.

I've always seen Halo (excluding ODST, and maybe Reach) as the definition of generic FPS. But when you're the standard benchmark of the genre, that kinda happens.

Edit: To answer the question, as it gently moves away from the original Halo formula in it's recent and upcoming title, I feel it's becoming less generic.

Carrying limited numbers of weapons to kill enemies whilst utilizing regenerating health bars? I don't know about you sir, but that is the most originalestest thing I've ever heard! What'll they think of next....

Halo is and forever will be generic. A victim of it's own success. It may have gotten away with it if it was a better game. Everyone saw how much money was being made by a game consisting of a clad armoured space marine protagonist fighting off menacing alien forces in a galaxy far far away and wanted in. After which a number of wank copies were made and a selection of "wank-tastic" sequels, draining what originality was in Halo until it's creative grapes withered down to generics raisins.
