Halo 1 and Halo 2 revolutionize FPS gaming. Halo 3 kinda just... rode their curtails.
What? What about Forge? In my opinion, the creation and inclusion of Forge I what made Halo 3 so great. You can make anything : a map to play some kind of mini game, and the ruleset as well.

Has Halo ever been anything other than generic? at least the main series anyway. nondescript space super soldier beats down on evil aliens that look funny to save the humanity from impending doom?

Not necessarily a bad thing, I'm a fan of the series, But all FPSs are generic to me. It's good fun but nothing particularly special.

Are these threads getting old ... YES!

Halo created the foundation for a good FPS game. Pretty much every game since has been just like it just different graphics.
Correct.

What happened to you, Escapist? You used to have good threads with topics that weren't just mindless dribble. You changed, man. You changed.

I think over time the Halo series is really losing its appeal. I could name about 5 games right away with the same premise of an out-door shooter with a loosely relivant story: Haze, Far Cry, Crysis (basically every game made by Crytech), Lost Planet, and Just Cause 2
Crytech games - sandbox games with a completely different engine - therefore completely different.

Lost Planet - 3rd person shooter, not 1st person. Completely different story, characters, control scheme slightly different, a different way of fighting (weak points, T-ENG hotspots, environment manipulating your health, etc.) - therefore different.

Just Cause 2 - oh come on, how is that even remotely like Halo? You can parachute out of a plane to land on an enemy's back nd knife them in the chest, for goodness' sake... - therefore completely different.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You just lost all your credibility with that argument. Now here's mine. Halo: Combat Evolved set the genre and provided the groundwork that led to almost all other FPSs today. Yes, that's right, including the likes of COD. Also, Halo has deep characters with interesting backstories, motives and reasons for what they do. So they aren't one-dimensional space marines, and far from generic. Story? The story of Halo is one of the deepest I've seen in any game, not counting things with stupidly expansive universes like Star Wars and Warhammer. Read any of the books, comic books, play any of the games outside the main trilogy, or watch the anime shorts, to see what I mean.

Overall, your whole point is wrong and unjustified, with no evidence to back it up. I have evidence to back up my claims, and you lose the argument. Thanks, and goodbye.

Umm, Halo 3 pushed the boundaries of mp, Combat Evolved gave to breath to the genre. But Halo 2 and ODST were for show. These ones are generic.

As for CE being the pinnacle of FPSs or something like that, that's pure crap. UT was way better, along with UT and UT.

What about contra and metroid? Not FPS, but still shooters about aliens.
Why is metroid getting not love?

That is right it is the advertising not the actual game.

Also halo has always been generic it is just over hyped like FF7 because it was on Microsoft's first console and hugely announced game.
A company already rather well known with its computers.
FF7 because it had several other games before it to build the hype and was it's first 3-d game.
This goes along with many games we have today the biggest examples are Sonic,Mario, and Megaman.

The concept is at least 1930's story wise maybe even older book wise.

When is my mars attacks game? and I don't mean destroy all humans!

Saying Halo revolutionized anything is odd if any we are the ones doing it the consumer we constantly demand better things, something other than halo would have done it sooner or later.

Though halo isn't that real though shooting a pistol and the bullet going through a tank?
Ha!

"Read any of the books, comic books, play any of the games outside the main trilogy, or watch the anime shorts, to see what I mean."
Because clearly people want to waste money on a game that barely puts any story in the game and are you suggesting to people to watch that piece of crap anime?

Are you nuts!!!

Haha please don't even get me started on people who talk about all the bullshit that goes around the game. Suffice to say that if I expressed my opinion on the subject, a lot of fanboys would get butt-hurt and I would almost certainly get suspended.

Considering the fact that Halo might be ending with "Reach" (As far as Bungie goes anyways) and the fact it has had a Main trilogy with an expansion, an RTS and now a new fps on the way to finish off the series... No.
However, as a Fan of Halo I can see it as a Run and Gun game, "Move forward, shoot bad guys, see a bit of story via character interaction/and/or/cut-scene, rinse and repeat" However there have been games like this before and after. Some of them might even be thought of as classics in there own right...
so Four main FPS games, and expansion and an RTS seem to be a good running for a game like Halo.

Edit: "Though halo isn't that real though shooting a pistol and the bullet going through a tank? Ha!"
Huh, wish I could have had that in Halo when I was playing, would have made fighting a tank a heck of a lot better >_>

I don't think there is any consensus among Halo fans to make people read the books, play the other games or watch the anime shorts. The reason it is so often mentioned is that, simply, it exists and that as a rule most Halo fans would prefer it if people at least gave the franchise a proper look before they wrote it off.
It's not so much a demand as it is a suggestion, a suggestion that people don't have to follow and therefore have no right to continue to get angry about. If you don't like Halo, that's fine, you don't have to read into the deeper expanded universe if you don't want to. But also don't just deny its existance or assume that it must be poor quality as that annoys people quite a bit.

Ironic, you're part of the reason these treads exsist. You think Halo is still unique even thought its basically the same as every other shooter for the past 3-5 years
I just want to make sure you know how little sense this makes. A game that came out 8-9 years ago is generic because everything else copied it? Is Evil Dead generic now that every second horror is "teens in the woods get killed off"? Is Lord of the Rings generic now that it'a law that every Fantasy setting must have ancient Elves, miner Dwarves and a young upstart race called Humans who have destiny on thier side?

As far as I'm concerned Halo didn't do anything special for FPS games...
What it did do however, is bring things that PC Gamers had had in FPS games for years, to the consoles.

Just Cause 2, really? How is that anything like Halo?
OT: I liked the first Halo a lot but since then every game has just felt like the same game with updated graphics and a few minimal changes.
I dunno. The only thing I could maybe relate is how high you jump. o_o;

No offense, but every game released after 2005 feels like that, generic. That's why I'm probably going to retire from gaming.

No,the anime suggestion is what I'm touchy about if you are going to suggest to someone watch such a thing...

Read the whole thread from beginning to end and the only reason most people hate it is because of the fans who blindly follow it.

It is an okay game besides the rabid fanboys, major story flaws, and gun flaws that come with it, but it isn't no Mario.

I have to agree with this, I would keep some nostalgic games though.
