Or Sonic. Wait, what?
I'm sure you could list a lot more examples to the contrary of what I'm saying. I could also list more games that haven't ended up like Sonic.

My point just is that there's no rule here.

Oh, and in response to the last post: in my experience Ensemble has been far better at balancing their games than Relic. It may not matter if you're playing their games single player, but DOW didn't last the years of plays AoE did. At least not where I'm from.

Despite being manlier than anything anyone could ever dream up on a non-drug induced trip, I don't think DoW2 will appeal to fratboys, even those with computers able to play it. Even if it came out on the 360 I don't think it would sell to that demographic very well. Even if it was advertised well and had a big picture of an ork with rockets on his back shooting his guns at a guy with a chainsaw doing a front flip in the air on the box it wouldn't sell well because it's an RTS with depth.

Or I could be way off with all of this as well.
You're not.

The whole issue is the depth of the game. Anyone with a minimal background in shooters can pick up Halo and be decent at it in an hour or two. To play an RTS at anywhere near online standards, you had better practice for a very long time. Especially one as complex as Dawn of War or Company of Heroes.

Killzone 2 isn't a Halo killer, Halo Wars is. Wait, let me explain.

Even if Ensemble manage to pull a miracle out of their collective arsehole and make a functional console RTS, the game is still going to be replacing the run and gun style of Halo that makes the bulk of its fans love it with a calm and methodical pace that requires actual thinking - be honest, how many of the fratboys will really stick around after that? With the name Halo stuck onto a game they really don't like, they drop the series. Thus, Halo is killed by Halo Wars.
Halo Wars WILL be bought by the halo fanboys, which in turn may turn them into RTS fans.

Good God that would be the end of days wouldn't it?

I know you did a lot of work to make all those graphically-aided comparisons of the game to Halo, but here's a novel concept for you to think about. Did it actually occur to you that the game isn't trying to be Halo!?

Nice theory. Too bad they'll still have Halo 3 to come back to when they ultimately lsoe interest in Halo Wars, and Halo 3: ODST coming out later this year will clumsily compress the chest of the story to stave off the death rattle - probably attracting some new people to the online multiplayer in the process.

I'm sure some of them will turn into RTS fans, but I'm honestly expecting Ensemble to dumb it way down for the console crowds. Then when the fratboys who LUV Halo Wars will attempt to try another RTS and fail miserably because they are much more complex. This isn't set yet, as I haven't seen any gameplay.

What I really expect is for the fanboys to make it go multi-platinum during release week, then everyone will return it, moaning that "it's not a real Halo game". Caveat emptor, *****.

I've been a member of the Halo community for a while now. And that is where it's strength truly lies. What keeps the game going and in the gamer consciousness is the strong following by hyper dedicated fans.

Despite my ties to the Halo community, I hope Killzone does as well as a game can do. I'd much rather have two good franchises to look forward to than just one. But I don't see why one or the other has to be labeled a "Killer" of anything. KZ, even if it's immensely popular, will only "Kill Halo" in the minds and hearts of Sony fanboys who likely have no idea what Halo is even about. And inversely, the Halo zealots will chirp on about how their game is vastly superior even before KZ comes out.

Bottom line is that hype killed the first Killzone because it was a decent game but not nearly as badass as it was promised. Like Fable 1, if the devs had kept their gob shut during the production time and just let us experience the game without the "Halo Killer" moniker attached it would have been better for all concerned. Here's hoping we don't see a repeat of that nonsense.

I will admit that I am a PS3 fanboy, but I can see why all these PS3 fan sites and other gaming sites are calling this a "Halo Killer", well first off on the fanboy sites its because that we PS3 fanboys would love to see thousands of people waiting out in the street for Killzone2, and watch people ride ATVS up and down the street that have some sort of plastic covering resembling some vehicle from Killzone2 and then going into a building decorated entirely in a Killzone2 theme and then watching some guy in a Helghast suit hold up the game while everyone cheers.. sort of like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reaXYMihM1Y . And on the other random gaming sites they just say that to throw fuel on the fire that which is known as the console war.
Ive been waiting for Killzone2 ever since It was first announced, and I will love it when it comes out.

Nice comparisons. Personally, I don't think Killzone is a Halo killer. Different platforms, different ideas, different universes. Not to mention, how can any franchise kill another realistically? Halo-killer is just some silly phrase that was bandied about to start this thing up.
Will it be awesome? I hope so!

Killzone won't even make Halo feel bad, let alone kill it. Even if Killzone 2 is a perfect 10 it will never unseat halo as the top console FPS. Even Gears is just holding Halo's seat till it gets back. I'm not being a fanboy, just stating the facts.

Neither is halo wars because the game is being sold to a wider audience than just frat boys.
Your point is invalid until you can come up with a reason why the general RTS fan won't buy it.

Killzone one was a bad game, it was fun for the first play-through but I wouldn't play it again. Why would I buy the second one for that? The smart thing to do is wait untill I play the game, then get called a fanboy for enjoying/not enjoying it.

If Killzone turns out to be better than either CoD or Halo then I'll eat my hat. I know I'm not an advocate of originality if it costs the gameplay, but Killzone looks too generic and bland even for me. Even the name is stupid and generic.

Pretty much every FPS ever looks generic and isn't original in any way.

I really enjoyed the first Killzone, me and some of my friends used to play the multiplayer modes on it all the time. But to call it a Halo killer is pretty stupid in my opinion, like it's said in the OP, it's nothing like Halo, the pacing is completely different, and more importantly the FEEL was very different. Still I'm looking forward to the second one, assuming that it ever happens, and it's not another Duke Nukem Forever.
