Hey, hey. I was not 'pissing' on the games, I was pissing on the people who make them less fun. Quite the contrary, I enjoy a lot of the games there, I was only providing examples of how it's not the game that's bad, it's the people that play it.

And what's a 'snerk'?
What you call "bad" other can call good its opinion. "One man's trash is another man's treasure"

this explains all
lol at that

as for the topic at hand halo can never be anthor star wars for alot of reasons.Frist is the most apperant reason that Star wars is a movie rather then a game. 2nd Halo's story is so uninspired its full of more cliche's then a speech to a freind after his girl leaves him. 3rd star wars was and in alot of ways still is very orginal and taps into religeious and mythical elements that speak to everyone. and lastly ( well not really but ill end here) starwars was had better games then the halo id rather play KOTOR 1,2 or battlefront1,2.

Back on topic, (sans-fanboyism) I can't imagine Halo challenging Star Wars. Normal people, God's honor normal people with real lives, loved Star Wars. Critics, experts, and everyone and their mother has heard of/seen/enjoyed the Star War's franchise. I'm not saying Halo couldn't excell in the full market, but it hasn't had that test yet.

Secondly, and from a more critical point of view, Halo doens't have the literary content to measure up to the things that do. It's not just about creating a universe that's fun and interesting. Those things are great, but that's not what Star Wars (just as an example) is about. Star Wars is, in the end, about Luke facing his father and overcoming his hatred. Its about Han choosing the right thing over the profitable thing. Its about Chewbacca confronting his blatant homosexuality. You get the point. Even if you aren't a Sci-Fi fan, you can still relate to these emotions. The "I'm a genetically engineered killbot destined to save the world" simply doesn't have the personal appeal that alot of people can connect with.

Just my humble opinion.

Any franchise has the possibility of mimicking Star Wars give time, if the owners want to milk the merchandising rights dry and the fans get rabid enough about it, but of course as long as Star Wars is still being raped for revenue it will always have that head start in its favour.

What I find interesting about the comparison is, it seems like the same people who are deriding Halo 2 for it's ending, are saying that Empire is the best of the trilogy.

On a separate note, did I just read that right? Chewbacca confronting his blatant homosexuality; bloody hell, I've been watching the edited versions by the sound of it.

I haven't seen anything in Halo that really shows the originality of the franchise - it's pretty standard sci-fi stuff, really.
Star Wars, in it's day, was a very original cross between science fiction and the stereotypical medieval fantasy cliches, and some how it all just worked. And, of course, Lightsabres.

Until there are more people other than just the stereotypical immature male American teenager talking smack with a shamfeully high pitched voice on Xbox Live, and legions of disproportionally male obsessed fans dressing as Marines and Brutes and Master Chiefs carting around replica weapons to game conventions and selling pathetically over priced items on online auctions site, Halo doesn't even come _close_ to Star Wars.
there is allot more to Halos story than you think, you just have to look. for example, In the novels there are some great stories about the inner workings of the covenant and how its social structure is under the constant threat of a total breakdown while the only thing keeping them together is a zealot mad with power and leading his people on a path of destruction
The books are even shittier than the game. Halo 3 won't be classic sci fi because really, when you get down to it, it's Aliens with a dude.
well your logic can easily backfire because when you really get down to star wars its aliens with a dude but both stores are good because of all the other things going on, wether that be the miseries of the forerunners or the powers of the force

Unlike Star Wars, Halo is the fad of this generation. give it a few years then the next big FPS will come about and all the little children will want it and go apeshit for it. Hell, we saw that for Doom, Quake, and Unreal, although Unreal, in my humble opinion, is a hell of a lot better than Halo.

I've played all 3 Halo games and read the books but all I can say about the OP's question is; No, Halo while a good game is no were near as inventive as Star Wars. (the original 3 not the bastardized prequels.) The Halo universe just is not original enough to be able to lend itself to many things besides more games that will end up just being generic at best pretty soon.

And having said that the same goes with Star Wars, it wasn't the first time the core idea had ever been thought up but the first 3 movies got things right. The games and other media form the IP has lent itself to have all really been a mixed bag, ranging from awesome to painfully awful.

Star Wars is unique and nothing will ever be as great as Star Wars is.

Even if the Halo universe has great depht (if you have read the books and not only played the games) it can't become Star Wars.

I am a big fan of both Halo and Star Wars an i have spent men days an nights researching about Halo and Star Wars.

Don't get me wrong, Halo is a great Sci-fi adventure but it is not Star Wars.

I'm not sure why people are putting the Star Wars story up on a pedestal; it's a very simple good verses evil boy realises destiny story with religious overtones. Halo's story is no big deal either.

A story based franchise is not built on the original inspiration (be it a movie or game) it is built on the exploitation of the fans who devour every crumb of information, who buy every book and piece of merchandise, and who become so blinded by the good points that they no longer see the bad.

So to anybody who thinks that Halo cannot do this, I say check out any website forum where Halo is the subject of discussion and prepare to change your mind.

PS - To any of the Halo bashers out there, let me paraphrase the Emperor:
With every negative comment you make yourself more the Halo franchises servant.

I like Star Wars (at least the original trilogy and a lot of the games) but I have to admit that some people put it way up in a pedestal, a bit overrated sometimes. And Halo is the king of overrated videogames, especially when claiming "firsts" in gaming (online multiplayer, use of vehicles, etc.; come on jsut ask a PC gamer). So, they are similar in that aspect. Although Halo is way more overrated than Star Wars. Star Wars has the movies (the Halo movie may be awful) and a list of amazing games (and some pretty bad ones also). The Halo universe is not as rich as the Star Wars universe.

Time for an attack of ACADAMIA!

The reason why Star Wars has such universal appeal can be summed up by the following article.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monomyth

For those of you who don't study mythology obsessively (which I'm guessing is most of you)the Monomyth details a kind of story known as the "Hero's Journey" that pretty much appeals to everyone everywhere and always has throughout time. You can make variations on the monomyth but its core assertions are hard to escape.

George Lucas, in creating Star Wars made very deliberate use of Monomythical tropes and devices to give the story such a broad, sweeping appeal.

Here's a quote from ol' George on the subject...

"it came to me that there really was no modern use of mythology...so that's when I started doing more strenuous research on fairy tales, folklore and mythology, and I started reading Joe's books. Before that I hadn't read any of Joe's books.... It was very eerie because in reading The Hero with A Thousand Faces I began to realize that my first draft of Star Wars was following classical motifs"

This focus on Myth and Folklore is REALLY what makes Starwars so endearing, there is a lot of universal appeal packed into it, all dressed up in a fancy new setting that was so different from anything people have seen before.

Halo on the otherhand, while plenty interesting, really lacks this grounding in the Mythic and the folkloric and is, for lack of a better definition, pretty standard Military Science Fiction that uses tropes from Aliens, Starship Troopers and other science fiction works I've never read. As well, the overriding militarism of Halo may make some uncomfortable and the lack of an Everyman Hero may be what prevents it from ever achieving the same status that Star Wars has. Halo also lacks a strong supporting cast, there's no Chewie, no Leia, no Obi-Wan, no Threepio, No Artoo and certainly no Han Solo, it's (pretty much) just the Chief, Cortana and The Arbiter, none of which I find particularly endearing as characters.

Lastly, here's a list of the people whom I am associated with who like Star Wars (Note: Like, as in enjoy watching the movies, not love, as in obsessively fan over)
My Father
My Mother
My Boss
My Brother
My Sister
My Brother-in-Law
My Best Friend
My Girlfriend
Both of my Roommates.
Me.

That is a pretty GODDAMN broad appeal. I simply do not see Halo as appealing to as many people.

Star Wars has become.....More of a classic now.
It doesn't seem to appeal to the youth of today the way it did to my lot.
They can't release any new films.
They're releasing another star wars movie in a week or two, although it's really just a spinoff

Better yet has the word Covenant appeared on the religious part of a census like Jedi has?

I would have to say, hell no.
However we do have some things to compare:
No matter how burned we get (or say we get.. I liked Halo 3 and even liked aspects of the 'prequel' movies)with each release of these IPs, movies, books, games, etc, they get snapped up like those colored hippos snap up marbles. I don't think that will change. There are all these people who raised voice on high to decry how bad Halo 2 sucked.. they still bought 3. They then went forth (some even in this thread) to decry H.3... they still bought it.. and I would go so far to say (argue as much as you want) that those same people will buy a Halo 4 if/when it is made. They will probably say that one sucks too.
The same goes with Star Wars and all it puts forth. If Lucas made a new movie..say based in the far past of that time line or even just after Jedi, it would do just ducky in the theatre funded by all those rabid sheep who swore they would hate Lucas to death if it were possible and never buy another ticket, game, t-shirt as long as they draw breath.
So, similar in their love/hate relationships with their respective fans, I still say NO to the original question. Halo will never be as big as Star Wars.
Either way... they are both like nookie. We may be out with the hot chick, we may be with the fugly one... either way: when we get nookie, we like nookie... no matter what we tell our friends later.
