It use to see things like IMO, or SP? and be able to look up what those letters meant, but nowadays I can't help but notice people are just making them up at their leisure. Does anyone else feel this way? Or have we just gone crazy.
are the two mutually exclusive?

Leet speak isn't out of control. Sure, bad grammar and spelling are; but the only time you ever see leet speak is in people's names.
Yea i don't mind people putting numbers in for letters for say their gamer tags, that's how my whole clan is.

IMO, people use whatever they are most comfortable with. But I believe there are some places people should(IM, texting) and should not(Reviews, comments, posts, web sites, etc) use short-hand unless it fits within the context and can be figured out without looking up (see IMO, and for those who won't get it: "In My Opinion").

I'm fine with it if I can understand what's being said. For example, Lol and IMO are fine, but those are well known. I mean, if you make it up on the spot, people aren't going to understand (and yes, I have a friend who does that and doesn't understand why people don't get what he's saying). I'd say it's a slippery slope.

I know it's been said, but it all depends on where short-hand is used. Text and chat are excusable, and most informal forms of internet communication (in small doses), but I tend to threaten people who use it in spoken conversation.

Are there any specific examples of short-hand that bother you more than others?

When the entire sentence is short-hand? ROTFLMBFAO for example?

What's really sad is when I get memos at work full of this crap. I get emails from clients I can barely read and it's my fault for not responding to them.
