If the band shirt is for the Wiggles, then that's childish. Otherwise you're probably ok. IMO.

I've seen people in their 50s rock band shirts. I never look down on adults wearing band shirts, they're usually the "chill old guy." I see no problem in it at all.

Now, if you excuse me, I have to set up which of my MLP shirts I should wear for tomorrow's afternoon outing... (The AC/DC parody shirt or the Gangnam Style parody shirt?)
Option C: The Big Lebowski/Phoenix Wright "Mark it Zero" parody shirt.
Even better! Especially since my friend e-mailed me about wearing his Big Lebowski "Urban Achievers" MLP shirt during the outing...

I thought it was no White Stripes shirts after Labor Day...

I'm sorry, but anyone that goes around telling you NOT to do something because it's childish...

Is really being rather immature, and has some kind of personal insecurities.

While for instance, yes, playing with toys is a children's activity, if you like it, then trying to deny you do isn't mature, it's actually the act of someone who feels so insecure they have to PROVE their maturity through very visible and dramatic displays.

"Oh! Look at me! I dress in really formal clothes and have no hobbies whatsoever that a child might also enjoy doing! I am so mature!"

Except, of course, this attitude is anything but.

It is a sign of severe emotional insecurity to be so concerned about the appearance of maturity, rather than actual mature acts.
(eg. Responsibility, being dependable, reliable, trustworthy, considerate... Able to think for yourself... Make your own choices...) THOSE are actual mature traits. The other stuff is just play-acting. Trying to look mature to hide the fact that you aren't.

Personally I like the satisfaction of walking around with t-shirts of death metal bands nobody's ever heard of.

Now that is a bit childish. But just wearing band t-shirts in general? Wear what you want and pay no attention to people that pressure you into changing for the dumbest of reasons (like the girl you described).

I once knew a girl in school who wanted me to ditch my luxurious long hair for a trendy emo haircut. I refused, doesn't matter that she was cute. I make the rules when it comes to how I look.

No and even then, what's wrong with "childish"?

I mean yes you wear formal cloths when needed like furneal and wedding etc but NO ONE should tell what clothings to wear!

What if somebody knows who they are, saw them at their album launch, owns a copy of their split 7" with a glorified Incantation cover band, and won't shut the fuck up about it? If that sounds like fun, think of it as a routine conversation whenever I go to underground metal gigs, and please consider trading places.

I don't come across many of those to be honest. Though if I did I can imagine that it'd be torture. In that scenario the only option is to get into even more obscure bands. If they have more than 100 Facebook likes, forget it.

I'm 21 and I mainly wear band t-shirts and jeans daily, except for work. The only exception is when I wear one of my 10 Marvel t-shirts. I love wearing band t-shirts as it attracts people that are interested in that music to you, and gives you an easy Icebreaker when meeting new people because you know you have a common interest.
I don't have a Dying Fetus shirt but I do have a kickass Nile shirt and a fair few Metallica shirts :)

No, it's not.

However if that's all you ware all the time then maybe you should think about expanding your wardrobe a bit.

Also this lady is criticizing your fashion sense and she's not even your girlfriend? Yeah red flag right there.

Unless you're in a situation that demands adherence to a certain dress code - a job interview, or a networking function - why lose sleep over what others think? The average schlub at the bar has no standing to dictate your value.
true...but I don't mean stressing over it, just having a little self awareness

for example people often mistake me for being a lot younger than I am, this is partly because of my looks but also because of how I dress, I have longer than usual hair and favour jeans/sneakers/t shirts. I could change that if I "dressed my age" more, and while I'm in no hurry to do so just yet I am aware of what image I'm projecting

[quote/]Just quietly, 'fashion' is not rocket science. It's all about quality materials, designs/cuts that accentuate an individual's attributes, and confidence. There is a reason why certain items, like the pencil skirt and woven shirt, are considered timeless. Eschewing tacky gimmicks is great for one's wardrobe.[/quote]
heh...womens cloths are often poor quality

anyway as someone who has a thing for graphic tees I can attest to the fact that the style of the T shit (which varies quite a bit for women) can make a huge difference

Says you sometimes lolita fashion can seem like rocket science. Requires correct corset/bustier, garter of some description, correct stockings, correct shoes, petticoat/panier, many dresses have lace up bodices or sleeves, need the correct hand bag, and head wear, and you gotta do your make up right. That's all if you're not wearing a coat or shawl too, then those have to be correct too. It can get downright insane. Especially on more complicated outfits composed of three or more pieces.

I've had the occasional conversation, or even just a short "Awesome shirt, dude, love them." with/from randoms because of band shirts.

How is wearing a band shirt immature? I'm super into music. The band shirt is an extension of my personality.
I don't wear them at work or weddings or whatever, but general in public? Yeah, band shirts.

If someone finds me expressing my love of music (in a non-in your face way) with my clothes to be immature, then fuck 'em. Stop judging the way I dress just because you don't dress that way, hypothetical person.

If it were up to me we would all live by the Debretts guide to dressing.
But I am not one to actually try and effect how others dress... unless it is for an actual event. Going out for dinner with someone for example, I would be in a Jacket, and maybe a tie depending on the location, a proposed partner would idealy be in an equivalent.

Pretty much my whole wardrobe save a couple of proper shirts and my suit consists of band shirts.

And I'll be honest, I don't /want/ to wear what counts as fashionable for men at the moment. Cardigans? Low cut shirts and skinny jeans? Yeah I'll pass.

T-shirt and proper jeans is a timeless look. Not only that, the clothes actually mean something to me, rather than just being some meaningless logo or zany design. Football shirts would annoy me to hell if I were actually into football. Wearing the shirt for the team you support is all well and good, but they've got so many advertisements on them, you look like a walking billboard.

That's not childish at all. In fact, that's probably the most acceptable way to dress casually. People who wear button-down shirts for no reason all the time are dorkus. Unless you're wearing striped polo shirts and bolo ties, don't let people tell you how to dress.

Having only recently found a band I like enough to wear their shirts, when I buy their latest album, I plan on buying at least 3 shirts. And I'm thirty...something. Wear what you like. The shirts I have that aren't band shirts are great icebreakers and I get many people asking me where I got what I'm wearing so I trust my own personal taste. Any woman that takes issue with your personal style is looking too hard and shouldn't be trying to change people into something they are not. The first part of being in a relationship is knowing your boundaries. Your own personal tastes, likes/dislikes, unless it's something completely new, definite boundary.

I like dark-colored graphic tees and black jeans. Now, I wouldn't show up at a funeral dressed like that, but for everyday walking around I'm going to go with what's comfortable and appealing to me. Anyone who has an issue with that is likely someone whose opinion I can do without.

I am 26 and I wear band t-shirts (actually, at the moment I am wearing a t-shirt from The lego movie, so make of that what you will). I have to dress smart, (or at the very least smart casual) for work, so I am not going to dress smart just for lounging around the house and drinking tea. Dress in whatever makes you feel comfortable (as long as its not illegal).
