And in a good 10 or so years, we'll be living in a future VERY similar to Deus Ex 1.

Seriously, if you haven't played it, do it. Take a good look at the world. I really worry that we're headed that way.
So we'll be like Deus Ex 1 but without going through Deus Ex 3?

Damn.

Hey UK/Australian escapists! American anthro dragon here. How's it in the UK/Australia? Because if America keeps on track with these kinds of bills and freedom-limiting actions, I may reconsider my citizenship here.
Australia's pretty damn awesome at the moment.

Okay, goggles on kids, it's experiment time
Finding things out
checking the news
is it cancer or gout
it's there in the clues
we're seeing the world
and learining with joy
and so let's chime
every girl and boy
it's experiment tiiiiiiiiiiiime

Okay boys and girls, do you have your goggles on.... well lets put them on. Okay? Safety first remember. Okay, today we are going to find out if you are living in a facist dicatorship. What we're going to do is go outside to the shops, and shout "FUCK THE GOVERNMENT" as loud as we can, all together now.... very good. Now, hold up a sign that says "ARREST AND IMPEACH THE CRIMINAL OLIGARCHS"... you're doing very well.

Now, time for the results, lets go to B.E.N.N.Y, the results computer, 'hello benny'
'hello jim'
'benny, we weren't arrested or tracked or killed, what does that mean?'
'it means that we are not living in a facist dicatorship AND THAT PEOPLE SHOULD GO BACK TO THEIR COMFERTABLE FREE AND ENTITLED LITTLE LIVES AND STOP TRYING TO GET A THRILL FROM FIGHTING OPPRESSION THAT ISN'T BLOODY THERE!'
'inside voice benny'
'sorry jim, shutting down'

Well boy's and girls, that's all we have time for today, but come back next week when we find out if you are really to poor to pay for the games you pirate. So, i'm dr Jim, remember safety first and always remember it's
experiment tiiiiiiiiime

It's not at V for Vendetta levels yet, more a very watered down level. The extreme xenophobia an alarming amount of people have makes me wonder if the 'it's illegal to own a Qu'ran' thing is really so far away from what'll happen give or take a few years. The censorship that the American congress are trying to pull is certainly making the V for Vendetta future seem all the more likely to occur.
Although, we do have plenty more than one guy in a Guy Fawkes mask running around and creating havoc, albeit restricted to the Internet. So I guess that's that.

No. I don't think so. On the great scale of total liberty to total subjugation we're pretty far on the liberty side still. People have a tendency to overinflated the issues and I think the problems we see appear worse then they are.

With sopa and the ndaa bills, I feel like we're starting to live in V for vendetta times, mass censorship, people being detained without trial never to be heard from again, hell I'd move to Canada or Britain but then they'd just ship my USAss back. Anyone else feel the same way?
Uhh, no, actually. The whole 'fight back' thing we did hasn't been met with some sort of militaristic backlash. People are not afraid to speak. We aren't actually constantly monitered (because there's way too much cost to DO that and not enough manpower or resources). This isn't a repressed society like the 1950s. This is not a vicious cabaret.

I'd say we're between 5 and 20 years from V for Vendetta, but we are on the path. With the bills in place american freedoms are being stretched to the breaking point. We will lose much of what we are if we do not take drastic actions within the next 5 years.

If you're leaving America because you hate it, why would you go to the two countries most similar to it?
Just because they are similar doesn't mean that they are identical. However, I don't understand them either, simply because as bad as it is here, America is still the best country on earth. that won't be the case for much longer, but for now it is.

Seeing as Alan Moore wrote V for Vendetta in the 80's and was based off England's super conservative, authoritarian government, I'd say we've long since been in "V for Vendetta" times." It's just that Americans are finally starting to realize it.

Like Alan Moore in the late 80's. I've begun thinking of moving to a different country. Despite my dislike for snow, I've been researching Canada. Looks like they've got, at least, the same standard of living and freedoms, better healthcare and economy, they aren't as corporate or war hungry, and no one waves the flag in your face and asks, "Did you thank God you were born American, today?" Any Canadians in the audience who want to shed some more light on their country for me?
Our culture is extremely similar to American culture. You pointed out all the benefits. It does come at a cost however. Our income tax is about 23%. By the end of all federal and provincial taxes, it's about a 30% cut out of your paycheck. We also happen to be extremely spread out. There are really only a few large population center. The worst part is that we have Harper in with a majority government, so we're going to see a passing of several conservative focused bills over the next 4 years. It's probably better than the US right now, we weren't as affected by the recession compared to the US, but overall I personally think it's a better place to live right now.
Just keep on thing in mind... as conservative as Harper is, if you stuck him on a chart comparing him to American conservatives, he comes out pretty much left wing.

I think Mike Kupari's answer to this entire brouhaha belongs in this thread.

http://larrycorreia.wordpress.com/2012/01/18/sopa/

You didn?t care when the government decided it could spy on you without a warrant. You didn?t care when they started telling you what you could eat. You didn?t care when your kids? education was turned into indoctrination. You didn?t care when they were more worried about military veterans than Islamic terrorists. You didn?t care when they spent so much money that our entire economic system may co?llapse. You didn?t care when they gave billions of your money to unions and corporations that were their political contributors. You didn?t care when inert cosmetic features on guns were felonies. You didn?t care when they made it a fucking crime to not have government approved health insurance.

All of these things were done in your name. On your behalf. To help you, protect you, take care of you. Each time you gave them more power and gave away more of your freedom. Each time you believed them when they said they were protecting you, or helping the less fortunate, or sticking it to ?the rich? who ?aren?t paying their fair share?.

Each time you applauded their efforts. Mocked those that were concerned. Called them uncaring or racist or alarmist or stupid. Each time you asked for more. You begged them to take care of you, protect you, right wrongs, enforce equality.

But now that your Internet porn and bit torrents are threatened, NOW you care?

It?s too late for all that, kids. Turning off Wikipedia for a couple days isn?t going to win back the freedoms we?ve pissed away. It isn?t going to undo decades of expanding government power. They?ve already decided there?s nothing they can?t do, no law they can?t pass.

We watched it happen. We let it happen. We have the country we deserve.

So go ahead, post a rant about SOPA on your blog. Link to Ron Paul?s web page. Pretend you?re doing something. It?ll make you feel better. Then you will go back to business as usual and so will they.

Democracy in action. Isn?t it beautiful?
This article is more or less why I am pissed off at the population in general... I am doing what I can to right these wrongs, but I'm only one man, swimming against the current.

It's simple really, those are the only two first world countries people in the US can think of that won't require they learn a second language. Yes, I'm dead serious about that. They are literally the two laziest options open to us. Hell, we can just drive to Canada if we want.

So why do Americans say they'll move to Canada or the UK if things get worse? Laziness. Pure laziness. Be honest, did you really expect a more complicated reason than that? We are very simple minded people after all.

You mean the world has become a really bad, stupid movie?

..............

You might be right.

OT. It's always the people in the world who have the least to complain about whose complaints are the most vocal.
oh come on, the movie wasnt [i/]that[/i] bad, I loved it at the time, though after reading the comic and everything, plus looking back I dont see it the same way.
I'm~~~just~~~trollin'.

I just find it rather funny that people are crying totalitarianism simply because Megaupload got taken down.

An honest answer; Yes, we do live in V for Vendetta times... if you live in China, or Russia, or North Korea, or larger parts of the Middle East and Africa, etc. But America and Europe. Fuck! No!

Heh heh, so true. England has been emulating America more steadily year by year. Hell, those who hate the lawsuit and fast food culture blame it squarely on the USA over here.

No, in V for Vendetta it was a totalitarian takeover by Conservative leaders, this is a totalitarian take over by Liberal/Progressive leaders; tooooootally different.
