So the initial problem i see with this post is the fact that you liked tomb raider you deserve a punch at the very least for that one, second you're going to go watch every zero punctuation and see exactly what Mr. Ben Yahtzee recommends as a "good" game, you're going to play said games if you still don't think any of those games are good, you are obviously no longer a gamer and should sell all your game consoles/ your computer on ebay, and then use that money to explore other hobbies and interests.

Maybe some Brutal Legend will cure your dislike for unoriginal games. Have you tried Psyconots? These games can cure you from your slump of dull games, well Brutal Legend isn't out yet so just go get Psyconots.

I dont think games have got worse, some games are good for the action element, some are good for story, rarely do the two work together.

Portal is a newish game that was amazingly original.

People seem to forget that there were crap games ever since games! Its just the list of greats are accumulated over time. and it seems impressive - people will be saying the same in 10 years but with some of todays games added.

No i get where your coming from. It seems more and more like the originality that was there in the begining became "what? He sold THAT many of copies doing THAT?! OK LETS DO THAT!" so its like if you find a game that you enjoy nowadays its a diamond in the rough. Ive got a Gamecube, Original XBox, PS2, and a 360. I lost my gaming computer.

I have the following for the 360:
L4D
Gears of War 1, 2
Fallot 3
Overlord
Army of Two
Marvel Ultimate alliance
Forza Motorsport 2
Rockband
Dynasty Warriors: Gundam
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
CoD4
Halo Wars
Dead Space
Fable 2
RE5
Bioshock
Turok
MK vs DC
Dynasty Warriors: 6
Assassins Creed
Too Human

Now you'd think, or at least i would, that with all that i have to choose from id be fine until christmas. But im not. It seems more more im being driven back to my older systems PS2 especially. I agree with you OP game devs need to step their game up

It might just be your opinion there are some good games, though there ARE a lot of crappy titles out recently, I'm playing a lot of old school games. Honestly I have more games for my Genesis/Megadrive than I do the "next gen consoles (360/PS3)" with more variety.

Personally I think RPGs of late have turned to absolute crap (Fallout 3 excluded but that hardly counts as strictly RPG) I've been gaming on several older RPGs (Breath of Fire 2,3, Chrono Trigger these by the way I've never played before and have no nostalgic connection to) and they're FAR better than the RPGs I've seen lately. I'm told Blue Dragon is right up my ally but I haven't the interest honestly. The better new RPGs I played is Summon Knight 1 and 2, Brave Story and Disgaea series.

Newer games don't suck, they're just different. I just had a PS1 gaming night, and it was righteous.

Personally though, I still enjoy both old and new games. So yes, it's just you.

I just think we had lower expectations then. People always complain about how bland and boring recent games are, but look at it from this point of view;

Prototype is a decent game, not a mind-bogglingly messiah-game sent from Buddha to grace this Earth. If Prototype was released ten years ago, it would have been the best thing in the world.

Now take a really good old game. Any at all, your favourite old game. If that was released now it wouldn't be half as good; it would get panned by every reviewer for not being up to standards. Nostalgia adds a lot to it, and a great game back ten years ago is still considered a great game now. I personally hate Gears of War and consider it bland and up it's own arse, but in ten years time it'll become the next "Games were better a few generations ago, none of that Wiistation 360 crap like today."

So, to surmise; nostalgia and lower expectations of the past cause this mindset, in my opinion.

Even if it's not just you, it ain't me. I've found plenty of recent games that I've enjoyed.

Also, there have always been crap games, but the nostalgia factor cancels out the memories of those games.

Is this just me?

I havent found a game I like made within the last 4 years!

The games I like: Warcraft3, counter strike cz, Tombraider (1,2,3,4), crash bandicoot, Gran Turismo, Tekken 3, GTA, Diablo2, old PES, worms (2, world party, armageddon), a mmorpg called Tibia a while back. As you can see I play most genres :p

Games I have tried to like: Crysis, COD4, new tombraiders, wow, new fifa+PES, Gears of War 1, Test drive unlimited etc.

I play them for a couple hours (if that even) then just stop, theyre just boring, thats the only way I can explain it.

I got my first games console at age 5, a PS1 then GB colour, GB Advanced SP, PS2, XBOX 360, Wii and a proper gaming pc couple years ago. I sold my Wii after 2 weeks because it sucked, only console I have at the moment is PS2 and 360, havent played neither for over a year.

I'm 15 now, the only game I play ocassionally is warcraft3 and thats it, am I just getting too old for games or what??

It feels like the new games are too easy, in terms of requiring creativity and theyre just not.. exciting.. I remmeber playing tomb raider finding hidden areas and actually caring about the game, wanting to complete it, finding out how the story ends.. the stories on the new games are just crap, I just dont care about them, it feels meaningless ???
This game is new, and most certainly does not suck.

You are 15 now, so that means you have a great list of games from the past to play \o

I get really enthousiastic for a few titles, instead of midly for a lot of titles. I can name 4 games I want in the next 2 years F/E but I cant wait to play those.

There have been plenty of good games and bad games over the years, I can rmember plenty of games that sucked back in the day, the balance has always been the same.

Well... the first new game I've bought in a while is Empire: Total War after having a very pleasant experience with the Total War series... quite frankly I was immensely disappointed.

Well, older games always seem better. People just don't realise that more games came out in 1998 than just the great ones, only we've forgotten them. I don't think games have gotten worse collectively, but certain genres have, Horror for example.

What I can tell you is that developers have gotten worse, they've become more money hungry. Am I the only one who wants to punch CliffyB in the face for giving off the very strong aura of a douchebag? :p

I used to think that, until I went back and played those old games. Then I thought to myself "Oh, look! That was a waste of Microsoft Points. It's alot easier to entertain a 5 year old than it is to entertain a 15 year old, and you just retain enjoyment out of old games because of the kid in you. That doesn't mean your growing out of video games, but alot of games are more fun as long as they're simple. Take Portal and Katamari for instance. Very basic rules, very well praised. Back then video games where more commonly simple like that, but hype nowadays demands intuitive, sophisticated gameplay engines and innovation, rather than simple fun. Also, try some of the Xbox LIVE Arcade games if you're a Classic Junkie. Even stuff like the new game 'Splosion Man has that classic feel.

I dislike these threads of people whining about how "mainstream" games suck and how things used to be so much better. I have been console gaming since 1991 (I got my Sega bundled with the original Sonic) and gaming on computers since 1988 on my dad's Apple IIc. That makes me 2 things; old(er than 15) and VERY experienced in video games.

Games have changed a lot in the last 20 years (fucking DUH) and there are a lot of new options available to developers. There are also a lot more genres (they do make AWESOME games that aren't fps btw).

If you liked Warcraft 3 try Supreme Commander (on PC before xbox). The game is probably the most unique rts ever concieved (spiritual successor to Total Annihilation). Instead of Warcraft's micro management focused gameplay it emphaises macro management and balancing economic growth and mass output that can lead to some AWESOME battles. You couldn't do that on psx or n64.

I personally also really love the "popcorn" games (as I've come to call them) that are coming out lately. Games like Assassin's Creed, Ghostbusters, and Dead Space. Games that give you a fun, dazzling cinematic experience. Yea they might not suck you in like a great strategy game that gives you 30+ hours, but they are a ton of fun (and piss off my neighbors from the bass in my surround sound system).

EVEN CASUAL GAMES HAVE SOME FUN STUFF TO DO. Anyone who hasn't had a late night Rock Band session (you are 15 so NO DRINKING YET. At least don't let your parents catch you). If you don't have fun rocking out to Journey with three of your closest (read drunkest) friends then you have something wrong with you.

There really are a lot of innovations and new ways to go in games and, weather you haters like to admit it or not, a lot of developers really put some great work into crafting new, unique experiences that give a great sense of immersion and are a ton of fun.

To end my rant its just you and a bunch of loser nerds who don't like anything.

We need to band together as gamers and not buy average products and instead put our money into the games that truly excel. Then we'll get more quality in games.

There ARE a few good titles these days. They're rarer but they're there.

Fallout 3
Bioshock
Orange Box
Braid
Street Fighter IV

And many more. It's all about digging deep enough to find those diamonds in the rough.

Well I think it depends on what youre looking for in a game, if I want an "experience" ill watch a movie, I have a proper gaming desktop with gaming mouse/pc expensive 5.1 speakers and I can admitt it wasent "crap" but it was far from "fun" maybe I just need to try different games like fallout, but I dont want to waste £20+ on a game I might just play for a few hours..

Good games aren't that hard to some by, originality is totaly off the point. big guns big monsters, seen it before right? dosen't mean it's doomed to be crap. Some games do require a little bit of teething to get into.
