I've been clicking around and it kinda seems like every game from here to there is being bashed for one reason or another by a healthy portion of the website's population non the less. I get the idea that there's the whole "it's my opinion" thing, but I'm also starting to get the vibe that the Escapist is one of the more cynical websites around. Considering that it's the home of Zero Punctuation I guess that I shouldn't be surprised, but seriously guys. Any thoughts?

Not really. Skyrim is universally praised, the Witcher 2 had a great reception here, Deus Ex: HR was met with a positive reception here,.....I don't see it. Personally, most of the games I played this year I liked/loved.

oi?
Have you SEEN the hype for Skyrim this website generated?
Have you SEEN how much love this site has for Mass Effect, Silent hill, Half-life, Portal, etc.?
We aren't THAT cynical, and I wouldn't say that just liking a game isn't "in" as you put.
unless I'm horribly misunderstanding the point of this thread.

I completely agree with you. I have games I dislike that are loved by many but I try to avoid souring your milk with my tastes. Sometimes, it can't be avoided if talking about the progression of a genre or something where games get used as examples. IF you are using a game as an example I, personally, don't qualify it as "souring your milk".

Today it seems people are playing games looking for something to ***** about. I mean Arkham City was being mauled for being "sexist", it is popular to say that Skyrim's writing is horrible because it is Bethesda, Deus Ex is racist because there is a black woman with an accent, etc. Instead of asking "what do I like about this game?", it seems people are asking "How can I make an argument against this game?"

Can't say much for Half Life Portal or Silent Hill (And call me as ass if you wish but I suspect that half of the support for those games comes from Yahtzee saying how good they are) but Mass Effect is most certainly coming under fire.

this does happen more often it seems than it should...this era is slowly reminding me more and more of the "being politically correct and non offensive all the time" era, which i fucking hate. instead of focusing on good things a game does, everyone constantly points out every nook and cranny the game has that wasn't polished/done correctly, and then crucify the rest of the game for it.

I was referring to the overall reception on the site. Some people are not going to like a game. And complaining that a company can't properly patch a game is uncalled for? Hell, one of your links is a site contributor explaining why he didn't like Skyrim. I still don't see it.

There has been tons of skyrim thread recently, but hardly any of them were to do with the actual game itself, for example what are your favourite parts of skyrim, instead it's just endless nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking, and meme threads.

Yeah, this community has gone to shit, I've seen better topics on the skyrim boards on gamefaqs, at least they talk about the game...somewhat.

Isolated threads criticizing parts of a game amid tons of positive threads or threads just discussing the game? I don't see how that qualifies as "taking fire from all directions".

I've dug through the Skyrim threads and I've seen a lot of people getting really annoyed with it, a lot of people saying "STOP ALREADY" and if I'm wrong and the game is an exception...ever other game is still getting torn to shreds arounds here.

I think part of it is that a very large amount of people use this site. Yes, we have games like Skyrim, Half-Life, Mass Effect, and others that are liked by a lot of people, but there are always those who don't. And since one who doesn't like a game is usually far more vocal than one who does like a game, they seem to pop up more. I see a lot of people bash Skyrim for being too buggy, or continue to freak the fuck out over Mass Effect 3 "going off in a horrible direction" or whatever the latest bullshit is. I do agree with you though, cynicism runs high on this forum, and it does get irritating sometimes.

It's always been "cool" to be indifferent to things. If you care about something and like it that means something you like could be open to criticism, thus questioning your taste. It's much safer to just not like anything and hate everything, that way, your ego never has to be challenged!

You need to point me in that direction, because whenever I look up games that I like, I get reminders about how much they suck.

That's pretty funny. I'd also like to add this:

As for the topic at hand, well I don't have much to add. I just get bent out of shape with "Am I the only one who..." threads and I haven't had a chance to post my zebras before now.

The patch thing is understandable and I don't even consider that hating so much as expecting the quality Bethesda was more than happy to promise in the name of hype.

However, First person shooter is the type of person the I dislike. The whole article says "Skyrim sucks because 1 NPC didn't react the way I think it should have." It ignores every other aspect of the game including the spirit behind the game. Considering that it is ignoring the spirit behind the game, it is no wonder his claim is it has no spirit. The entire piece is really contrived all for the sake of nerd baiting a popular game. This is how professionals troll. 1 bland NPC in a sandbox world = game that sucks and has no soul. (A non-story centric NPC at that)

The point is it is easy to find someone who is trying to hate on a game and it is rare to see someone trying to like a game or give a game the benefit of the doubt.

Just like how no one is ever the only one, there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that every living individual believes. Some people will hate anything you like. Their hate does not mean that it is out of style to like something, they just have their own opinion which happens to be different than your's. The hate that this site heaps on certain games is often shocking, as is their very negative view of the term fan, but it is also astounding how many people absolutely love games like Portal, BioShock, Skyrim, and just about any AA wRPG.
