Wow, you could play Jesus, and you have to run across a huuuugee map, informing people and you have godly powers. That would be, sick.
Accually everytime Jesus ran up against a hate filled crowd, he ran away before they beat or stoned him. Like Assasin Creed, but not killing anyone, and just being loud in the market place.
So Jesus is that guy you follow and beat the shit out of to get info?

Holy shit, I think this is possibly the best idea ever.

It'd have to be tongue in cheek to work though, and I doubt the church would be up for it. Still, you never know, pretty much 3/4 of the bible concerns violent battle.

Yeah, but if you beat the hell out him it's ok...ya know he'll forgive ya. And if you accidently kill him, he'll respawn.

A good series that has many references to christianity : Halo series.
Well... It may not be a bible game, but it's as close as we've come with a good game so far.

Recently? Yeah, old testament for the win!

Hell yeah! You get to be Jesus and do all kinds of awesome stuff, and kick demons asses and save people and shizzle and free the holy land from sin by acquiring followers by saving cities and villages and what not. You could put points into different skill sets to different skills like holy avenger skills or blessed healing and that kind of RPG related jumbo. Have your own way with Jesus' adventures. For a twist, multiple ends, good, bad and neutral! I don't think the church would be all for it though. Anything that depicts religion as remotely not tedious and / or terrifying is blaspehmy.

As long as it has a positive message, I don't think that the Vatican would have any issues.

If they made a game like the "Passion of the Christ 2: Crucify This!" joke from Family Guy that would be funny.

Sorry, but I really can't see how this can be made into a decent game. I like to keep my bible far away from my Xbox.

Considering how ridiculously violent parts of the bible are, it could be done. I for one want to lead the armies of god against the antichrist in a fiery climactic showdown.

Oh, I think it's very well possible to make a game that covers the events from the Bible..but it might get a little tricky if you actually want to make it a game with the same theme and moral conclusions. I mean, the parts in the Bible that are 'gameable' are mostly action scenes. All the moral stuff is way too boring for a game.

I realize that the Escapist isn't exactly the best place to discuss religion, especially Christianity. But I want you to ignore your own personal religious or anti-religious stances for this thread. Is it possible to make a good game based on the Bible?

I think so. You'd have to stick to the Old Testament, because that's where the most action is. The folly of many Bible 'games' (and I use the term VERY lightly) is that they don't take the subject matter seriously. Take, for example, Moses saving the Jews from slavery. Make that a pulse-pounding stealth/escort game. Don't make it a kiddy platformer!

Anyway, that's my stance. How about you guys?
They tried this in the NES era.
The problem tend to be who are you marketing to?
The problems they befell the nes games is they where meant primary for very young children.

I can see the possibility of a good one being made. I just can't see anyone making it.

Personally, I could easily see an Assassin's Creed/Eternal Darkness style setup with the plot specifically taking place in the future, but the gameplay focuses on events that happened in the past (entirely, or almost entirely, in the Old Testament), simply because there's a variety of game styles that could be accommodated. Pretty much anything involving the Hebrew/Phillistine wars could be an action-oriented setup, with heroes like Samson, Saul, or David, possibly the same with Gideon and Jericho, and almost everything Elijah did was worthy of a third-person action or story game. The Judith or Ehud stories could conceivably fit a stealth game, and I could see Esther, Joseph, or early Moses fitting an intrigue game.

Might suffer from lack of focus, but like I said, I don't think anyone could make it in the first place. We can only <url=http://www.cracked.com/article_15699_9-most-badass-bible-verses.html>fantasize.

In that case;

Escapist community project, anyone? I'll do the soundtrack. ;)

Agreed for the most part. They aimed for what seemed to be the appropriate audience at the time. This really does not excuse the lack of quality in the titles, though. Most, if not all of those games were made to make a quick buck. They added colorful backgrounds to appeal to kids, and Bible quizes to appeal to parents. That is the true failing of Bible games.
