What the title says.
Considering putting down a horse due to the costs of keeping one.

I'm almost certain that's some form of animal cruelty, I would think there would be somewhere you could give it to, but I don't know anything about that.

Just shooting it dead...? That's probably illegal.

Why not just sell it?

It will vary depending on where you live, but I know here where I live, you could easily be prosecuted for animal cruelty for shooting a perfectly healthy horse in such a way.

if its healthy i suggest having it butchered since as i hear it horse meat is tasty but you might want to consult your local butcher or better yet one that deals in the more exotic meats since they might even be willing to take it off your hands without costing you a thing

I would recommend selling it to either a butcher or a local stable. Putting down a healthy horse is never a good thing ^^

I am sure there are plenty of places that would take a free horse and killing it for no reason is just disgusting.
He asked if it was illegal not unethical .

It is illegal , it goes under some bullshit animal cruelty law , if it was sick however there would be no problem

Depends on the country.
Mine has a fucked up system where it is illegal to kill cattle on your own because the government wants some tax on that shit, but legal to kill your pets.

If there is nothing wrong with the animal just sell it, quicker disposal and you get payed, double win.

Its probably a lot more ethical than what some other people do with their horses..
Some people get all upity about this kind of stuff, "killing any animal is wrong!" Ya, well after my state got rid of some horse processing plant because of these 'ethics', rather than having horses being sold and humanely put down, you wind up with an epidemic of horses starving to death and being forced into the wild. without the horse processing plant to sell horses to, the price of horses also dramatically dropped, allowing people who severely lack the financial means to take care of a horse to be able to buy a horse, only to let it slowly starve to death, which dramatically added to the epidemic. Its like the backwords logic that animal hoarders use...

but this is all beside the point. i don't know what the laws are on putting a healthy animal down. frankly, I assume that as long as its done in a humane way its probably legal

lol you'd be surprised at just how few homes there are for horses, even free horses. You'd be amazed at how many horses slowly starve to death because their owners can't afford to feed them and can't find any home to give them, despite desperately searching. and in reality, even a free horse is quite expensive, as a horse eats over $100 in hay every month, plus all the other expenses such as boarding, vet costs, etc.

People don't really want a good horse when hay costs 10-20 dollars for horse hay.
Btw Texas.

A Goggle search for your local laws would serve you better. I'm sure it varies.
This. Also look into selling the thing like this guy said:

Hell, I'm sure some farmer would be interested in it for something.

I'm pretty sure it is legal, PROVIDED that you do it in a humane manner, and as painlessly as possible. It's really only animal cruelty if you prolong the death (and besides, leaving it to starve would be even worse). I suppose you could always let it go.... but that might also be breaking a law (governments hate it when people let animals just go free. In Australia, it is illegal to let a cat just go free because we have an exploding population of previously domestic cats that just go around killing the birds).

Phone the police - they should know. If you live in Texas, I think it should be legal. If they say you can't kill it, I'm sure they'll allow a vet to do that for you. If you genuinely can't take care of it due to costs, then you should be allowed to visit..... whatever the USA's equivalent to the RSPCA is, and they'll kill the horse for you.
