What..... the fuck.

Really, you are thinking of shooting a healthy horse?

What the hell is wrong with you?!?!

Give it to a frickin' vet or shelter ect., sell it for money, give it for free. God damnit, you could do a million things to get rid of it, and you choose to shoot it?!?

Really, all this stuff about "Oh it cost's a lot to own a horse, the kiddies won't want it cause it poops." is bullshit.

Have you even tried?!?

No? Then get the hell of your computer, run around your town, and find someone how wants a free horse.

That don't work? Take it to a shelter or vet and explain. Be tough if you have to. They won't put down a healthy horse, so they won't leave it to die with you either.

Christ.... the stupid.

IT BURNS!
Is that an offer I hear you have an extra 2500$ laying around do you?

Um, did I say anywhere, "Oh hey, I want the horse!" No? Then why the reply. Also, notice you want to shoot it, so why not give it away for free?!? Really, read a little more carefully.... YOU. CAN. GIVE. IT. AWAY. FOR. FREE.

Only horse meat.
Which is not what I am doing.
Your Google-fu is lacking, my son.
sixth **edit** fifth (I was counting a sponsored ad BS link at first typing) link on a search for texas law on killing a horse:

http://www.animallaw.info/articles/ovustxcruelty.htm
the pertinent part of that article I linked to says said:
For cruelty convictions involving depriving an animal of food or water, abandoning an animal, transporting an animal in a cruel manner, injuring someone else?s animal, and overworking an animal, the defendant will be punished with a Class A misdemeanor, which may include a fine up to $4,000, jail time up to a year, or both. If the conviction is a third offense involving these actions, the state may punish the defendant with a state jail felony. Under Texas law, a state jail felony may include jail time ranging from 180 days to 2 years and a fine up to $10,000.

Some cruel actions warrant harsher punishments even on the first conviction. For cruelty offenses involving the torture, killing, seriously injuring, poisoning, fighting, or tripping of an animal, a state jail felony may be imposed on the first conviction. If a defendant is convicted three times under these harsher penalties, he may be subject to a third degree felony sentence, which translates to imprisonment ranging from 2 to 10 years and a possible fine of up to $10,000.
Killing your horse is a crime. Potentially a felony. You may consider craigslist. I don't know what city you're closest to, but there's bound to be a market for horses somewhere around there.

Read this NO. ONE. WANTS. IT.
You want a free horse?
Free doesn't mean people will take it, because it isn't a free horse, you have to feed it,vaccinate it,make sure it's hooves don't rot,and feed it grains.
Let me put it this way a horse costs about 20 times as much as your dog per month.

It's called anonymity.
It's not like I have shot the horse yet anyway.
I am asking for a reason.

So, you have tried to give it to everyone?

The vets, shelters, people, tried to sell it, the little frickin' four year olds that would die to have a horse?

You have talked to EVERYONE, and yet you still consider shooting? Wow.

I really doubt that everyone in an entire town would not want a horse. I also doubt you have spoken to everyone in that town.

And if that doesn't work, why not try the internet?

I can bet you someone will buy the horse online, because people go online looking for horses, therfore they know and have the money to support one, and if they see one for free (and you explain) they will jump at the chance.

Something nobody else has suggested I guess.

How about you lease the horse?

You own it, but, people pay you to rent the horse, take it out for a ride, or do whatever it is people do with horses.

Claps.

You have just made up another of the 3121 ways to deal with a horse without shooting it.

You need a reason?

Tell your 7 year old daughter (I'm assuming it's hers) that her horsie suddenly jumped her daddy and tried to eat out his eyes with his horrible horse teeth. After hours of struggle you barely came out alive as you both reached for the gun. BUT YOU WERE FASTER! You killed the demon horse in self defence! AND GET A MEDAL!

This way you are a hero!

I am almost positive it is illegal. Why don't you sell it or just give it to someone else willing to take care of it? I am sure you will find someone.

That could work. No one really wants to own a horse, but they wouldn't mind borrowing a trained one.

This is a good thought.

Shooting it is a bad one.

Good thought is good.

Go with good thought.

What the title says.
Considering putting down a horse due to the costs of keeping one.
call. a. butcher. the sausage for your salami has to come from somewhere. also, they can probably help you with whatever paperwork etc. needs to be done. they'l probably even give you money for it. better then shooting the thing dead and having to dump it.

Well I guess things in Texas have really went down hill. Have you tried kentucky? Seriously work horses typically sell for round 1k or better. Racers usually much more. Hell as long as its got working genitals, you can usually get someone to take it for well over 500 for nothing else but for foals.(let me guess, its a gelding? Thats about the only reason why you might have trouble getting rid of it)

I honestly have no idea how you cant get rid of it in Texas unless your on the east end of the state and unwilling to go to the west end.

Simply put. People WILL want it. your just looking at the wrong people.

And yes... destroying someone elses property is illegal. If its an instance where it belongs to your child, and they are a minor the animal is technically yours, and yes, under texas state law it is illegal to kill your own horse if it is healthy. Its also incredibly lame and unethical. I get that it is expensive, Ive raised horses in the past as well as growing 20+ acres of hay to support the beasts, But as it has been put repeatedly. If you dont want it SOMEONE will.

Other thought... I seriously want to know how the hell ANYONE would possibly be successful at killing a horse with a lawnmower.

Edit: also, on the butcher thing. I think you would have a harder time finding a butcher in the US willing to work with horse meat than you would finding someone to take it off your hands. Horse meat is almost as vile as venison.

EDIT: Final: Here, give this a try. http://www.horsefinders.com/

In Texas, yes it's illegal.

Just put out an ad saying 'Horse; free to good home, must pickup, giving away because is illegal to shoot.'

SOMEONE will snatch it up, especially if they realize you're about to cap dat nigga fo' takin' all yo' paper.

Fo' real, dawg.

But the idea of renting it out is certainly an option. Make the horse work for his keep!

Either way... you strike me as very cold and callous about this whole ideal. Whose horse is it?

Yeah, I say it's illegal, but I understand the position your in. I'm not sure where you're based, but here they have shelters for them. You should check if there's something like that near you, otherwise, you could probably get it euthanised at a vet.

Umm you do realise that that quote says nothing about puting an animal down right?
Humanly killing is a completely different thing to cruelty leading to death.
Nothing there implies you can't kill the animal, just that you can't do it in a cruel fashion.
