I don't really like how games are rated on the 1-10 scale so in that since, I would say every game is...not necessarily 'over rated' but rather, that their ratings are kinda ridiculous. The people who like MGS5 certainly don't think they like it more than they do, there are absolutely people who don't like it as much as they thought they would and there are people who are a bit miffed that it's breaking sales records for reasonable reasons, I'm sure. I wouldn't say MGS5 is over rated but it just doesn't look like something I would pay full price for...really there aren't many games I would pay full price for. It's probably not as good as E3 made it out to be but it's probably really good anyway and it looks a Hell of a lot better than MGS4 so there's that.

Phenomenal game and the most fun I've ever had with a Metal Gear title but I have the impression the developers(or Kojima in particular) tried to aim too high and the game reflects many of these meandering ambitions. They basically build an entire engine from scratch(and a really impressive one at that) while re-inventing the series with open-world and organic gameplay(a far cry from the series previous linear and scripted structure). The result is impressive given how the environment and all these different gameplay systems interact. MGS5 is a technical marvel polished to near perfection.

However this is one game I think would have been better in an episodic format(one that each would still be 30+ hours in size). Repetitive filler missions, a sub-par story with an unresolved ending and a 'second act' where you can just see the development time and budget shrinking all indicate a rushed effort on top of pristine groundwork. Which is a shame. But probably also symptomatic of the strained relationship Kojima had with Konami at the time. Which is a shit company anyway.

I don't want to call it overrated because it was very fun in the beggining, but then I realised I clocked 32 hours on it and I only made it in the first Chapter.
I decided when I get bored to see the "movie" on Youtube and I saw it until the end........then I realised this was only the first chapter. The game had 2 more chapters to complete the game!
Think about it. You must play these kind of missions over and over again just to see what will really happen with Big Boss Future.
You get bored, REALLY REALLY BORED!!!!!
But it was fun for 30 hours and because I get it with discount I am very glad.

8/10 game. Very good game, but repetitive and very long to trully finish the game....
To be more specific I only complete 17% of the game in 30-35 hours.....

Everything is overrated, Everything is underrated, everything sucks, everything is great.
I seriously hope that there are less people going on about games they don't like they're the end of the world for the rest of the year.

No. It has its flaws which most people seem to be aware of and acknowledge freely. This isn't a game where the masses or even a minority I'm aware of pretend it is the most perfect amazing game of all time. They acknowledge its strengths and weaknesses. So I argue by this logic it is not overrated.

My personal opinion on the game was that it had a weak narrative but the gameplay was probably the best third person action I've ever experienced. The attention to detail is awe inspiring too. Compare D-Dog to any other video game dog out there. He puts them to shame with how real he seems. Dogmeat from Fallout 4 is a joke by comparison.

I dunno, it was fairly forgettable. But can't be as overrated as Quantum Break or Hitman though, can it?
Does anyone really think those games are going to be anything special?
Judging by their past threads the OP does.

I do like the look of the game, but the thing is I have read some very unflattering reports concerning the game's story. Unless the game tells a story and tells it well, my interest is minimal. Some have said that it is easy to look past the flawed story. The idea of the FoB sounded like a deal breaker, but then I read something about how when the alert comes in and you open it up, you can quit out of it and it counts the "mission" as complete, and you don't have to build anything. I don't know though, it's on my Steam Wishlist. Maybe if I have money I am not using on anything particular, I might have a look at it.

Acknowledging a games faults does not automatically mean it can't be over rated. MGS got way more plaudits than the actual game itself was due and I suspect a lot of that was on the back that the game industry felt it owed Kojima something after seeing how poorly Konami treated him.

The question isn't was MGS5 over rated the question should be is Kojima over rated? (The answer is a big fat YES!)

I watched the ENTIRE playthrough done by some youtubers ... so I don't think I'd really be qualified to answer honestly even if I had completely ignored the entire Franchise up to this point. But I will say I noticed one huge glaring problem with the game and it wasn't its "Story" like so many others bring up. But rather how the "combat" is just a huge line up of neatly placed nails and every single thing in you arsenal is a just the same reskined but really effective Hammer and 9 times out of 10 your S-rank comes from rushing the stupid thing and bypassing content instead of being creative and thorough

Is the overrated game 'Is MGS5 the most overrated game' the most overrated 'overrated game' among overrated 'overrated game' threads?

MGS5 is utterly fantastic. The fact that it is so fantastic despite the problems with the story is an achievement in and of itself. It plays awesomely, and has brought some really impressive stuff to the table with regards to open-world and sandbox gameplay. If someone doesn't like it, that's fine too.

I think this review of Rise of the Tomb Raider makes for a good meditation on the bullshit of modern gaming.
Ugh. That Youtube guy. What a petulant whiner.

"How dare these people buy and/or enjoy a game that I don't approve of! They've fallen for the bullshit!"

By all means criticize the game, but throwing a fit over people enjoying something is just childish.

Now I think I need to go and mewl at someone who bought a Bethesda game.

"Guys, stop falling for the bullshit! You're not allowed to enjoy games I don't like! If you do they'll just keep making games I don't like!"

Dear God that 'review'...

Okay, I wouldn't mind so much if he didn't insult everyone who thought differently. He does the same "screw everyone who likes this" in his Firewatch review (and apparently men who like books have something to be ashamed of), but at least gives reasons pertaining to performance and length. Rise of the Tomb Raider...okay, he mentions that it's linear, and doesn't do anything new, but if that's the criteria for a game to be bad, then a lot of them fall into the same category. Fine to dislike, sure, but as the saying goes, "insult the product, not the person."

No it isn't. If anything than because the game has already effectively become the Metroid: Other M of the hardcore Metal Gear fanbase. The game is a joke to them, even worse than MGS4. And the game only got good reviews from reviewers who went to the bullshit Konami Reviewer bootcamp thing and played 10 hours of it. Notice how everyone says its great at first in this thread? The fact that they even describe the games story as the best in the series while using screenshots from scenes that were cut from the game was enough for me to just completely disregard anything they had to say. Online reviewers like SuperBunnyHop and such gave much more honest reviews that reflect more of the games content and aren't so obviously paid for. Konami has been blatantly buying reviews for Metal Gear since 4 anyway. The players don't like it. Anyone who spent a lot of time with it didn't like it unless they look back on their game time and say "Well I spent 100 hours with it so it must be good." but if that's all you can say to define the experience then it was probably terrible and you kept with it because of the way the game is designed to waste your time but reward you just often enough to keep you going like a shitty mmo. MGSV wont be remembered in a couple years and be looked back upon as a black sheep in he series. Peace Walker was a far better game despite MGSV being an upgraded version of it gameplay wise. The controls may be better but the level design, story, bosses, and mission variety were all there in Peace Walker. MGSV is a barren waste of time in comparison and that is no secret among anybody. Even people who like it only like it as a time waster they spent maybe 30 hours playing before putting down. It's shit. It's only overrated by paid reviewers who clearly never finished the game.

I never really enjoyed the metal gear games in their entirety so in my opinion it is overrated. Other people like em but each to their own I guess.
