well put it this way. From my perspective people say skyrim is less complex than oblivion which is less complex than morrowind. they also say skyrim has fewer bugs than oblivion which had fewer bugs than morrowind. all accounts are saying i would HATE morrowind since i hated oblivion. I have not played morrowind so i have no idea if any of this is true. Skyrim is by far one of the best games i have ever played and is tied for if not IS my favorite game of all time. So from my perspective Morrowind would have to be like Reaching Nirvana to top Skyrim.

I still think Morrowind is better than Skyrim but that is because I played Morrowind when it first came out. If you have never played Morrowind before, you are probably too late to enjoy it. Unless you spend a lot of time modding it, it'll probably just frustrate you.

Nope, Morrowind is very, very good. But outdated now compared to Skyrim. I made the mistake of expecting better than Oblivion when I bought it later hearing it was better; went back to Oblivion after a day.

Morrowind is better to the people who played it first.

You would have a very hard time playing it after Skyrim because Skyrim made many many gameplay improvements over Morrowind, such as stealth and archery. Good luck killing some guy in Morrowind with one arrow and good luck going back into stealth after someone spots you and every guard in the region becomes aware of you.

I loved Morrowind and I do like it's world and setting more than Skyrim. I also like it's alchemy and enchanting system more as there are no limits to what you can do. You can make a belt in Morrowind that could do say, 300 points of fire damage in a 50m aoe, while also doing 300 points of frost damage to a target on touch.

Morrowind is worth trying if you think you can overcome the combat issues. I would recommend trying it after you watch some videos on youtube or even get a hold of a demo or something if one is available.

You could also beat Oblivion in under ten minutes. That's such a terrible point to make against the game. Sure you can beat it in 4 minutes, but you'd be an absolute fool to buy a game as big as Morrowind which has hundreds of hours of story and gameplay, only to follow some guys video on youtube on how do it in 4 minutes.

I liked Morrowind way more than Skyrim. It's an amazing game, and one I will always remember. It was just so much more deep than Skyrim and Oblivion.

Morrowind is incredibly good, and coupled with the Morrwind Overhaul it can even look the part compared to Skyrim. In terms of combat friendliness, ease to follow the story, and general intuitiveness it's clearly dated and clunky, but the story remains solid and if you can run the overhaul the landscape is far more varied and visually pleasing than Skyrim's "grey, dark green, white, more grey, a tree" layout, with its crazy giant mushrooms, colourful swamps, Silt Striders and Cliff Racers, among other outlandish things.

To me, Morrowind feels more like a fantasy game, Skyrim just doesn't do that so well with its enemy variation of Draugr, bigger Draugr, even bigger more angry Draugr, bear, dragon, wolf, more Draugr.

Like i keep telling people, download and install MorroBlivion.

Morrowinds story and depth with oblivions graphics and combat system, which IMO makes it at least on par with skyrim, possibly better depending on which you personally prefer.

Myself? I like skyrim a tiny big better just for the updated combat system and voices, but Morrowind has massive depth and is much more challenging.

For it's time, Morrowind was fantastic. It's more of a 'traditional' RPG, with more classes and a slightly more technical (some would say unforgiving) feel with regard to levelling.
It doesn't have the polish of Oblivion and Skyrim, but has some extra detail that those games lack (loads more weapon and armour types, more spell types, more freedom with play style and exploration in general).
Also, it has a fantastic modding community, so you'll never run out of things to do.*

But it is old now. The engine is crap by modern standards, the graphics are a bit rubbish (though you can fix that with mods) and some of the gameplay mechanics can be downright irritating when you're used to playing something more streamlined. That said, it's aged far better than other games of similar age. If you like playing older games, you shouldn't have any problems.

This article might give you an idea of the differences between the two (I know that the page compares to Oblivion, but Oblivion and Skyrim are fairly similar)

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion_for_Morrowind_players

All in all, it depends on what kind of gamer you are really. I still really like it (albeit a horrendously modded version), but that could be because I've been playing it for years. If you like the idea of a slightly more complex and customisable version of Oblivion or Skyrim, and think that you'll have the patience for the 'quirks' that all old games have, then get it!

* Note: If you decide to get it, there are plenty of mods and bug fixes that make it a lot more fun to play. The Morrowind Overhaul has already been mentioned, and that's a good place to start if your PC can cope with MGE. There are loads of other mods as well, so feel free to message me if you want an idea of what else to use as well.

Edit: Grammar fix

I would disagree with those who say that morrowind is better

Morrowind is good but definitely is old. Old doesn't means bad it means you know based upon the ways of thinking and limitations of said time. To say it it is clunky, enjoyable but clunky! Just like oblivion and skyrim you have to learn to work with the game.

Morrowind is huge has allot to offer, great story and so on.. but it is well.. it is old. It will definitely feel odd to you, worth playing yes but keep in mind when it came out.

I watch b-movies and you know many are old. That means you have to keep in mind what they had to work with.

I think skyrim is better because it works relative smooth less clunky. I would put morrowind over oblivion, as oblivion is nice looking but lacks things to do almost. Morrowind has allot to do! Skyrim beats morrowind hands down! In being a modern, smooth game that offers so much.

I really get the feeling that people who rant on and on about "morrowind is better than skyrim" are more complaining that skyrim isnt morrowind.
I have one of these friends, who (pre-skyrim btw) got rather upset when he found out that they removed traditional skills in favor or the "do this and you will get better at it" approach. nothing worse for a franchise than fanboys.

I've tried morrowind, couldnt get into it, skyrim has far more immersion for me at least.

also: question asked in one year, answered (atleast, my answer) in the next

In my opinion, yes it is.
It's deeper. More stuff. More skills and weapons. Bigger map. Much more interesting map and enviroment. The story is about the same class. It's pretty, even in todays standards, it's ok. I prefer the music of Morrowind to Skyrim.
I think it's an utterly mindblowing experience.
In my opinion Morrowind is better than Skyrim.

Since pretty much every single TES story and 99% of the characters are horrendous, all you've got is a world to explore, and Morrowind's world is much, much more interesting than Skyrim's. If you're up for a bit of modding to improve some of its outdated elements, Morrowind is the finest free-roam RPG ever made.

Try Morroblivion

morrowind modded into the oblivion engine, dont know how complete it is but you might like it more than the old morrowind.

either that or just mod the fuck out of it.

I got an hour into morrowind before realizing how terrible it really is and i stopped playing. Skyrim is continents ahead in every way.

I personally love morrowind, mostly for the main story. I played it for a long time before I ever beat it. First thing you have to do to get into it though, turn the difficulty down to its lowest point. When you first start the game, EVERYTHING is going to be able to kill you until you get the combat down. Once you start getting your skills up, then you can start turning up the difficulty if you want but its still pretty challenging on its lowest settings.
It may have just been the fact that I took so long to try to attept to face the final boss on the original story, but the main story seemed bigger than both Oblivion and Skyrim. Add to that the expansions and it will keep you busy for a while.

Its worth the money if you want something deeper than Skyrim. Not saying its better than Skyrim, they are too different to try to compare, but there are much worse game for 9.99 on steam.

Morrowind is a richer experience, with factions vying for political power, tonnes of quests - the whole shebang. It even has vampire tribes you can join, as opposed to the kind of half-assed vampirism in its successors. it's totally non-linear, in that you can actually fail the main quest, if that's what you want to do.

On the other hand, you can mod the shit out of it, but the characters will still be weird, the conversation mechanism archaic - although with more depth, the animations will always suck, and I've never found a decent nod to fix the broken, boring and uninvolved combat.

It's a much larger time investment than Oblivion or Skyrim, and therefore deeper, but there are a lot of little things that are going to bug a modern gamer, from the lack of any real handholding - no compass for instance - to massive walls of text in place of voice acting, but it works, either way.

If you're a fan of the genre, or want to explore a rich world, then go for it. If you're just thinking about it because you hear people bitching about the good old days, then forget about it, because nostalgia can make up for a lot.

And whatever you do, get the game on PC. Skyrim might have been console-centric, but Morrowind will suck if you get it on Xbox, not to mention the fact that mods are the lifeblood of this game.

You are comparing an automotive to a locomotive in the sense that they were products of vastly different eras.

Rincewind summed it up nicely for those who have lived through both:
"
Better in some ways, worse in others.
Morrowind still has superior atmosphere, a more interesting setting
and much more choice overall.
Skyrim has better graphics and much better combat.
"

The ship has sailed and the sensibilities, values and understandings of the yester era with it.
You can either try and catch up with it or simply move on.
