Is music, music anymore?

I myself love classic rock. Hendrix, The Who, Eagles, too many more to list. The tune, the beat, the rhythm and the sounds just send goosebumps. I am, also, an avid listener of Old-school underground rap The Roots, Mos Def, Jurassic 5 etc.
But as watching television and hearing the new... New wave of music? Is that what they call it? I don't know. But you know "bands" like Lady Gaga or Ke$ha, oh God, I felt dirty just typing that. Are they MUSIC. Take that how you want it but think of it this way if you listen to them. But do you listen to them cause they are good or because other people like them?
There is also the subject of indie music (independent). I'm sure there are actual good groups but from what I've heard, it's all shit really. Please feel free to express various opinions about that as well. I just want to know whether or not if music has just gone downhill over time.

Oh god. If you get your examples of todays music from the pop charts which it looks like you did then youre not getting a real idea.

Yes pop is music. Dispite the fact you dont consider them so in technical terms and in the opinions of other it is

You like Hendrix but can you honestly say that back in the day when he was first coming out there werent people saying the EXACT same thing about him you are saying about Gaga and such.

To each his own. You might want to consider that. Everybody likes what they like. Just because you do not like it does not mean that its "shit".

Rap isn't music in my opinion, but there is such a massive spread of modern music, that you'll be hard pressed to find nothing you like. And yes Lady Gaga is music, I sure don't like it but it counts.

OT:

There is some good music. Pop is shit, but when has it not been? Most of the "rock", "punk" and "metal" is shit now too, mainly because its all so influenced by pop I had to use air quotes.

There are still some good bands though.

There are still plenty of really great bands making music today, some of which are actually pretty popular! Metric and Muse come to mind, and the indie music scene is always rich with fresh and enjoyable talent. So yeah, music is still music. The majority of popular music certainly isn't worth checking out, but that's not a problem considering this wonderful thing called the "internet" which gives you access to a multitude of things, including music from all over the world.

You want proof that music still exists? These guys. [http://www.myspace.com/modernhell]

Pop music is mostly crap. I don't listen to the radio anymore. Occasionally there is the rare great pop song like Forever or Replay (shut up, you know those songs are great) but mostly it's trash. You have to get into the underground stuff to find the real music now.

You know that your opinion on modern music is pretty much just a repetition of the endless cycle of music criticism that's been going on for centuries, yeah? I'm gonna bust out my Bach and complain that your damn 'rock' music isn't music either. See what I did there? Yeah, that's what you're doing. Ignore the crap you don't like and stick to bands you do like. Music is a general term, like all forms of art, and it's nonsensical to claim that some examples of it don't belong to the category. That's like saying a painting's not a painting because it's ugly.

Can I suggest you go sit on your lawn with a shotgun and tell passing kids to stay off it?

Because seriously, That's how this thread makes you appear.

"I like real, classic music, and while I haven't bothered to actually explore current music, I've heard a few pop acts and a couple of "indie" songs, and didn't like them, so all modern music is shit."

Modern music is very much still music, you just haven't exposed yourself to any but the poppiest of it.

Pop? The ghost of Michael Jackson would like to have a word with you.

And of course there's still music. Sentimentalism takes it's toll, so you'll never hold it as high as what you consider as "classic", but it's all still music.

oh, today's music is MUSIC. It's simply not my kind of music, so I'm too biased to comment further and any further discussion on the "music" of today will result in cerebral hemorrhaging.

Depends on your tastes, I guess. There's no arguing with the Classics. Even if "Classic" rock stations have started pumping out stuff that's too damn new to be classic for me! Since when are the 90's classic?! oof.

But I listen to a lot of electronica-styled music, not clubby trance bullshit, but I love music like Shpongle and Bluetech-- very layered and structured, deep rhythms, just good sounding stuff to me-- and jammy guitar and electro-stuff like STS9, so I think there's a lot of promising directions music is taking these days, but you can't really find it on the pop charts. Then that's all a matter of taste in the end, I suppose.

Pop music is.......well you know.....un-talented noise that manages to sell. Dont get me wrong, there is a lot of crap in every genre and I also happen to not like pop and r&b especially, but Im sure there is probably some noteworthy pop artist. Just think back to 80s mainstream music, yea rock in general is cool, but there was a hell of a lot of shit there too.
Edit: For example Michael Jackson doesnt suck

I would like to have a word with him too, about how I really can't be bothered to listen to his music.

Just never really got into it.

...You know that there are a lot of bands who make wonderful music who were only just being born in the eighties, right? Don't get me wrong, I'm half a throwback to the seventies myself. But I wouldn't judge a CD off the bargain bin by the copyright date.

I find it kind of offensive that you're using Lady Gaga to classify the entirety of music for the past twelve months, if not twenty years--or, no, I won't say that, but the idea of choosing a single genre to represent music of a single decade is a little off its rocker. Certainly the generation will be remembered for what was most popular, but that isn't what everyone listened to and it isn't what everyone made.

Very true. If instead of looking at the most well known pop bands and dug a little deeper for something that is made in your genre of preference, I'm sure you could find something. Hell, I hate most pop music, but there are still quite a few modern bands that I like.

I guess they're music becuase really, all musicians are entertainers, which is the only thing I could categorize their work other than music and they have no where else to go.
