Lol @ elitism.

Let's not try to be narrowminded. Yeah, Ke$ha's a talentless *****, but pop music IS considered music, even if you look down your nose at it. I personally think hardcore metal/screamo is grating to the ears, but I wouldn't say "hurdur anyone who listens to that is a loser".

Oh, so you'll only judge what falls into your lap? I suppose that qualifies you to make a non-biased assessment of a genre as a whole.

Can I suggest you go sit on your lawn with a shotgun and tell passing kids to stay off it?

Because seriously, That's how this thread makes you appear.

"I like real, classic music, and while I haven't bothered to actually explore current music, I've heard a few pop acts and a couple of "indie" songs, and didn't like them, so all modern music is shit."

Modern music is very much still music, you just haven't exposed yourself to any but the poppiest of it.

There are still plenty of really great bands making music today, some of which are actually pretty popular! Metric and Muse come to mind, and the indie music scene is always rich with fresh and enjoyable talent. So yeah, music is still music. The majority of popular music certainly isn't worth checking out, but that's not a problem considering this wonderful thing called the "internet" which gives you access to a multitude of things, including music from all over the world.
Muse is good I like them but to a limit. I also like gorillaz buuuut not the plastic beach album. Dunno why just hated it.
Really? :( Plastic Beach was soooo goooood. It sounds more like a Damon Albarn CD with guests than a Gorillaz album, but every single track is highly poished, 100% pure, certified gold.

Just because you don't like music doesn't make it not music. Sure, I'd easily take a song from the Beatles, Brian Wilson, or Bob Dylan over the music of today, but the music of today is still music.

The media runs it all now, look at all these pathetic emo bands and how everyone looks exactly the same, like some sort of whiney self harming anime character. It's all gotten out of control now and it's just silly, people just want to fit in and live fictiona lives and buy whatever is popular just because a magazine said so, whilst good bands get sod all recognition.

Most of the "rock", "punk" and "metal" is shit now too, mainly because its all so influenced by pop I had to use air quotes.
...eh?

OT Yes it music, saying that it isnt just makes you sound like a jackass. There are many genres outside of your preference surprisingly enough. Sorry for sounding like a dick but i get pissed off when people say this about screaming vocals so i can relate.
I hate most rap and some pop but that doesnt make it non-music.

.

It was good I tend to like somewhat electronic music, but Plastic Beach just stepped over my limit of electronic sound. My favorite song from the Gorillaz is either Dirty Harry or Clint Eastwood so compare those to Plastic Beach and you'll see my limit. Left Hand Suzuki Method was great too.

God fucking damnit.

Look, I once met a kid who would get in your face if you said you didn't like the band Rush and you hadn't heard at least three of their songs. This seems somewhat reasonable to me, but then he ruined it when he proclaimed that rap was not music. Of course, he couldn't name a single rap song, and he could barely name three rap artists. I mean, how fucking pretentious can you get? Just because you don't prefer a genre of music, that doesn't mean that it isn't music. It just means that you don't like it! The same goes for any genre or band. This is common sense, people.

DISCLAIMER:
My favorite bands include AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and any random song I find that I like. From any genre.
I do not force my opinions of classic rock upon other people. I told this chick who loves Rush that I didn't like Nirvana and she flipped and started yelling at me. Then to push her over the edge i put my hand to the side of my hand in the shape of a gun. And said Boom. That reeeeallly pissed her off.

You want proof that music still exists? These guys. [http://www.myspace.com/modernhell]

Pop music is mostly crap. I don't listen to the radio anymore. Occasionally there is the rare great pop song like Forever or Replay (shut up, you know those songs are great) but mostly it's trash. You have to get into the underground stuff to find the real music now.
THE FUCK WAS THAT?? I'm thinking I'm gonna a hear some pretty great music i press play and this ***** starts screaming. You can understand him but "metal" singers need to learn; you don't need to scream to get a fucking point across. You aren't Dane Cook or some shit.

Technically speaking, they are music but they are not good music. Pop in my opinion is absolute crap, I prefer Metal and Jazz myself. Pop is overly simple, there is very little difference between artists and almost all of it is made for the sole purpose of profit.

"Good music" is a relative term.

Different people have different tastes.

So lets all just enjoy whatever music we want and be done with it.

I don't understand. Michael Jackson did fall into my lap. Never really got into him. My wording as such might have been what caused confusion. I was trying to be tactful. Less tactful, but also with less confusion is this:

I've heard Michael Jackson's music. I hate it. Just my personal opinion.

I consider rap a type of poetry. Mind you, it can quite often be terrible poetry, but still poetry.

MUSIC on the other hand... well, I don't know how to describe music. Pretty much anything with a good rhythm, good instrumental parts, good lyrics. Basically anything I find good that has rhythmic sounds.

Or Gorillaz. They're just awesome.

There's amazing music being made right now. You just need to look for it. Every era has it's crap bands, and often it's the crap bands that make the big bucks. But that doesn't mean they define the time period.

Matters of taste and opinion do not take away from or add to the definition of what "music" is or is not. Despite how many terrible bands/performers there are out there today, there were a lot of them back then, it's just a matter of who became popular and who didn't.
