1. sounds that produce effect: sounds, usually produced by instruments or voices, that are arranged or played in order to create an effect
2. art of arranging sounds: the art of arranging or making sounds, usually those of musical instruments or voices, so as to create an effect
3. type of music: music of a particular type, place, time, instrument, or style
"rock-and-roll music"
4. written music: written notation indicating the pitch, duration, rhythm, and tone of notes to be played
5. pleasing sound: a sound or group of sounds that creates a desired effect
"the music of the wind in the trees"

this is the definition of music i found and yeah music is still music just may not have much of a message to it

HELL NO THERE NOT MUSIC ITS SOME IDIOT SPOUTING PROFANITY AND TALKING ABOUT WHAT HE DID WITH HIS GF LAST NIGHT.
That's been said about pretty much any artist in the past hundred years. No offense, but that response made you sound way too out of touch to actually take a look at the music you're CAPS-attacking. Although I agree that new music can be mindlessly profane at times, the same can be said about music from almost any time period. Some jazz lyrics were freaking terrifying. Then there's metal, which has been around since I think the late eighties. The point is, your argument is invalid, at least in my opinion.

To return to the topic, mainstream music is definitely "music", but it's really awful music. Some people enjoy it, and that's great for them. I don't give a shit about what other people listen to unless they're making me listen to it. That aside, I do think that mainstream music has gone to hell, save for a few popular bands (Foo Fighters, Gorillaz, Weezer before the shitstorm that was Raditude, probably a few others), but people can listen to all the disposable crap music they want because Rock can't die. It'll come back eventually, and this can already be seen with a lot of indie bands.

Oh for God's sake.

I don't like modern music either, but I have enough presence of mind to realise that rock and roll is hardly the same as Mozart, which is also considered music. The music you liked was condemned in its day by people who liked music from the fifties as 'not being music' youa re absolutely ironically repeating a cycle which has been going on since the first cave paintings and war chants, and will likely be going on as people argue over what hymns to sing as the sun explodes.

Yes, the music being produced today is music, just like everything deemed music for the last entire course of human history has been music.

Look, I once met a kid who would get in your face if you said you didn't like the band Rush and you hadn't heard at least three of their songs.
Yeah, most of the 'kids' I know are like that... though to be fair I know a lot of adults are like that too. I don't mind people sharing their favourite music, 'cause you can find some really awesome stuff that way, but the snobbery is ridiculous.

To me, it doesn't sound remotely anything like music. However, it is still music, no matter how shitty it sounds. Because believe it or not, there is such thing as good pop (Michael Jackson) and good rap (Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Immortal Technique). Every genre has their ups and downs in anything, whether it be music, movies, television, the like. There are even good romantic comedies if you look VERY carefully.

I used to feel a bit like you (never been big into music, kinda like what yhatzee said in his last guitar hero video is how I got into music, so I didn't have you're RAAAAAGGGGGGE!) But thanks to some of the good people of the escapist I was turned onto current music that I do like for the most part, alternative rap.

Oh god. If you get your examples of todays music from the pop charts which it looks like you did then youre not getting a real idea.
I would agree. I mean, I respect anyone's music choices, whether they want to listen to pop or not, none of my business. It's still music, whether you like it or not.

Still, you can't condemn modern music outright because you've only taken a glimpse at it. You've got to dig a little deeper.

Here's a personal example. Although I've always liked noise-punk and other abrasive stuff, I've always had a soft spot for classic metal, like Black Sabbath or Pentagram. However, as much as I love them, I always thought they weren't heavy enough nowadays. I looked at what the mainstream thinks is 'heavy', things like Slipknot and Metallica, and came away deeply disappointed. Too fast, too dumb. No groove.

Then, after some looking, I found Electric Wizard. They sound just like they're from the 70's, but they're so much heavier. It's perfect, they're just what I was looking for, and they're now my favourite band of all time.

So what I'm saying is, great music is still being made, you just have to look.
But the WIzard is dead! Long live Ramesses!

And generic, boring shit has always been produced, just history forgets about a lot of it - one of the reasons the Beatles did so well to begin with is because they were a breath of fresh air in a stale market.

Well. Yes. There are good bands out there. New, good bands. But it is truly subjective.

However, once you learn about musical theory, certain kinds of music ceases to entertain. After taking years of voice lessons and a two years of theory and improv, I can say that pop no longer entertain's me. It's too simple, too unoriginal. Not varied enough. For me to like a band requires that they do something exceptional.

Dispatch, Reel Big Fish, Rise Against, and Dragonforce are the only relatively new bands I listen to. And they're pretty main stream. But you won't see them on MTV or in the magazines too often I'll bet.

Music, like art, is determined valid only by the individual.

' The tune, the beat, the rhythm and the sounds just send goosebumps '

I would bet your soul that people nowadays say the same about the crap that is current. I don't think music has much originality now a days, so for me the last 5 maybe 10 years = crap music.

' do you listen to them cause they are good or because other people like them? '

I think people become aware of this 'new music' because it becomes popular, and then decide to give it a listen. Just the same way it was when I was young, kids now a days decide what type of music they like based on experiencing it. But many people who are not musicians don't look at music the same way those who are do.

It's all about taste, and I for one think current artists have no taste or originality, but producers make them stars, people seem to like them, they make money, and it's all good cause people are finding entertainment from this slop of pig shit that is modern music. (Wow, that's a run on sentence)

I am currently finding joy in classical music, so I guess talk of this modern stuff is lost on me, but like I said, it's like art, and it depends on whoever you ask. I for one think music stopped being music when artists started to make a gazillion dollars because they were a popular trend.
I actually think there is more originality in music now than there has ever been. You can find anything from ambient, psychedelic post rock, to technical death metal, to rap, and everything in between. A band I'm really digging lately called Kayo Dot combines elements of modern classical composition with vocals and instruments more usually found in rock, metal and jazz. Please find another decade that offers as much variety and get back to me.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that there is a lot of crap out there, and that what music is good is very subjective. I just strongly disagree on with your statement of there being a lack of originality.

Industries are basically like any other competition, if they generally agree with one thing, that they shouldn't sell out and be as unique as possible then one person sells out, eventually the whole shitstorm starts and all these new artists pop up and sell out leading the good ole ones to do the same.

This doesn't mean that you can only consider what you like music, I mean then your just like any other generic elitist metalhead who thinks he's above everyone else's music tastes because he listens to underground bands, complain how other genre's fans make fun of theirs even when they do it much more, the best thing to do is to take the mature approach to something you don't like and just ignore it, I mean its not like you are forced to listen to it on a daily basis and have a say in it, at least most of us aren't, you can always switch the radio station or pop in a cd/ipod, switch the channel if you do happen to hear it, or just cover your ears.

As someone who plays music, I try to listen to as much as I can, whether by using some of the iTunes features, grabbing songs from my friends, or just going on the internet and saying "what are some songs you like?". There is music that I definitely don't like, or at least wouldn't buy, but I've never called someone out for liking a particular band.

If you dig a little bit (which is a serious effort with the sheer volume of music available via the internet), it's possible to find contemporary music that you will like, no matter who you are.

I like the trend of "mainstream" music going towards music with emphasis on both rhythm and melody (instrumental or vocal), like what the Gorillaz have done (On this note, Demon Days is my favorite overall album in my library at the moment).

Anyway, you can't say something isn't music, as long as it has at least one of the elements of music in it.

Exactly. What you think is good music, I may not. What I think is good music, you may not. What the majority of people think is good music, both of us think otherwise. It's all a matter of taste.

Pop Music sucks. Listen to some metal of recent for some good ass music both fundamentally and technically. Metal is really the only stuff that I can tolerate anymore, the rest just seems like a desperate attempt to get the money from the teen girls and frat boys.

Just putting this out there. These are the 9 base elements of music [described simply], and can be found in anything called music, or can be used to describe something as music.
[notes are just sounds, for the purpose of definition]
1. Melody - the "tune" of the piece (what you think of when someone says "raiders of the lost ark theme")
2. Harmony - two or more notes played simultaneously
3. Rhythm - the "beat" of the piece (how the notes are arranged in time)
4. Tempo - how the music moves through time (fast or slow)
5. Dynamics -how loud or soft the piece is
6. Timbre [pronounced "TAM-ber"] - the characteristic sound of an instrument (violins & cellos have similar timbres)
7. Form - how the music is arranged (like verse chorus verse bridge chorus verse)
8. Texture - the number of independent parts
9. Aesthetic - the emotional impact of music (the only real subjective element, here because I feel it is an important part of music.

As some one who is taking voice lessons and has been brought up on classical music, a lot of modern music bothers me. What pisses me off the most with modern music is auto tune. To me that is cheating because you do not have to train your voice to be able to hit pitches just right. If you are a little off you can use this program to correct it. This to me is the downfall of music as us traditionalists know it. That is not to say there isn't good modern music, it is just going to be a lot harder to find. Just so you guys and galls know I do like a variety of music ranging from techno to classic rock. And for thoughs of you who think all indi bands suck you guys should check out Full Service. They are a band that I deeply respect.

Being a nut job who only likes classical music...
Its music, but music encouraging people to go do drugs and whatever. And Gaga is ruined by the fact one of my friends said "Imagine a chick dancing to this music. Naked. But shes actually a guy and could rape you." Disturbing mental image forever.

I am of the opinion that, if music is simply the expression of emotion through sound, then wolves howling is very much music.

Have you heard a wolf howl? It sends chills down my spine. And that was in a cartoon.
