girl in class: *slaps me because shes a ******
me: *punches her in the jaw*
teacher: you can't hit a girl!
me: This is american history class and yesterday you went on a big rant about how women should be treated equal to men. If a guy had hit me, I would punch him. Why should I treat her the different?
teacher: ..fine, you both get detention

I'd say its a semi sexist comment but it has a point.
But as someone pointed out already its less to do with why they can't (because that simply isn't the case) and more to do with why they don't.

The short answer is its a double standard thats hard wired into us.

The comment is true. Women complained about having equal rights, then they complain about everything else in their life. You got your equal rights. Now act like it.

With this specific situation I say your friend was being a bit dickish and sexist. I'm sure the girl was being lazy (like people are sometimes) and thought hey that person is going to put their book up maybe they'll put mine up too and asked him. Anyone in her situation would of asked.

"If women wanted to be treated as equals, why cant they do things themselves?"
I don't see the problem. I do services for women and men alike.

well, men do things for women, consiously or subconsiously, for sex (or chivalry, if you buy that). several tasks/gifts + good looks + or - personality=sex. doing a good job of that=pancakes in the morning.
so, depending on how attractive the man in question is and how much he likes pancakes, it might actually be unfair in the guy's favor. :)

He is a sexist, women actually do equal the amount of work and labour as men.
even more often, they deserve to get the same amount of payment, and to be treated just like men.
Why can't they open the fucking jam jar then?! >.<

OT: Your friend's a bit of a dick, not being a gentleman and all that.
Funnily enough, I think this post validates his point. That he must comply to expectations to not be a dick, but a 'gentleman'.

That said... he was kinda being a dick. If it were a woman demanding a door be held for her and kicking up a fuss, or something similarly outrageous, he might've been justified. But refusing to carry a book a short distance for the sake of 'making a point' is kind of... rude, above anything.

I imagine he meant "Why won't women..." rather than "Why can't women...". If so, no he isn't a sexist, he's anything but. He's still kind of a jerk, because I also imagine that the girl was just asking for someone to help out because she needed it, not because she was female and expected a man to do the heavy lifting.

Although if he meant "Why can't women..." then yeah he's sexist. But pointing out the double standard present in today's society is not sexist.

Well it seems more like an issue of courtesy then female incompetence. Like holding the door for someone. Though that doesn't make your friend sexist, everyone says something dumb and regrettable at one time or another.

I'd say he was sexist if he made more comments like that though.

I know alot of guys who can't either, besides if you are going to look at the general streangth of women compared to the general streangth of men, if they both train equally, or don't train equally, men will be stronger due to biologics. got nothing to do with lazyness as OP directs towards.
And I was clearly being honest in that... [/sarcasm]

Well if women want equal rights, they have to make some concessions.
What the hell are you talking about?
In general, like no more women first out of a burning building, they need to start bring money to bars and maybe sending the gentlemen a free drink now and then, and certain things like that.
