Yeah your just wrong. Modern games include split-screen, it's just generally not used. I know because my friends and I do split-screen all the time, as well as playing in the same room on dif consoles so, ur wrong

Me and 3 of my friends have a gaming night every Monday. It annoys us that multiplayer in most games these days is online only. Sure there's splitscreen but usually that only goes 2 player and there is 4 of us and it's not like we're going to bring an extra Xbox and TV round to my mates house every Monday so we can do system link.

HELL. NO.

http://i.walmartimages.com/i/if/hmp/fusion/RVL_hardware_photo29540X478.jpg

This system, right here, brings about cosmic amounts of living-room fun for millions of gamers, INCLUDING 'young adult' aged ones, to just a great an extent as any other age group.

But of course, the 360 and PS3 focus on online, so those gamers who enjoy playing games physically by themselves flock to those consoles, where they then surround themselves exclusively with people who like those two consoles. Which is why they think no hardcore gamers could ever like the Wii the best, because they don't spend any time playing games with real goddamn people.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm usually not THIS pissed about the whole thing, but it's like the gaming community is deliberately taunting me; they shut the door on all the fun they could have, then mock those who DO have the sense to enjoy it, and then they all start to look at each other and go "man I guess playing games with real people doesn't exist anymore. Yep, there totally isn't a huge community of couch-gamers that exist. I'm on the internet; I know everything." While they also interchange jokes about how "No REAL gamers prefer the Wii; just Nintendo-struck fanboys who can't deal with the truth. Heheh."

Eh when my mate and his family come round for the annual BBQ or just general get together him, my brother and me will play splitscreen... normally it degenerates into playing Action Sack on Halo... generally for them to start shouting sack action as if its the funniest thing in the world. But does prove that playing together in the same room is not dead yet.

It's still a big thing on the Wii, whether you like it or not . Why would you write off an entire console, especially when it still has many games with a feature that you fear is dying?

Apart from the Wii, I think the focus has definitely moved towards online multiplayer. Still, that doesn't mean back-seat gaming doesn't count. I've spent many an afternoon just watching a friend blast his way through Demon's Souls or stuff like Hard Corps Uprising and I haven't regretted a single minute of it. Couch co-op has never really appealed to me, however, seeing as I hate split-screen displays.

Try playing Gears of War (any of the three) in local multiplayer without ever glancing on your friend's half of the screen for situational clues. That's almost impossible. I had the same problem with GoldenEye back in the day, as much of an awesome game as it otherwise is.

I'd say the Wii is our last great bastion for single-screen multiplayer goodness, personally. I absolutely haven't regretted my purchase of New Super Mario Bros. Wii if only because of the sheer amount of mayhem being part of a full group of four players brings to the table.

That was so much fun, seriously. :)

Messing about in singleplayer is sort of hard over the net. But still, i think it is a shame that lan (the kind that only needs one lisense for multiple computers) and and splitscreen is slowly fading away.

The closest I've come to playing with a friend in the same room over the last year is recently when my best friend brings his Xbox and TV over and we both play Dark Souls in the same room. It's on separate consoles and TVs.. and we're not in the same world.. but it's honestly the best I've got.

I really think they wasted a wonderful opportunity for multiplayer with Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.. Honestly playing either with a friend would be so amazing. It's cool that you can invite randoms to your world but I haven't seen any summon signs AT ALL since I started playing. It's cool to emphasize that you're alone but c'mon games like this DESERVE to be played with a partner. They're so hard that some parts feel like you couldn't possibly beat them without help.

No, many games that allow for local co-op are still popular.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 & 3
Super Smash Bros (Melee & Brawl)
Halo 3
etc.

I find it pretty funny, multiplayer is creeping into more and more games and yet the gaming expereince has become more "solitary"...in a manner of speaking

because to be honest, aside from fighting games like mortal combat or racing games (I think) and such I really cant think of many games that allow you to play multiplayer with somone else in the same room, with another controller...it seems the only use for a second controller is charging rotation :/

its also funny that "split screen"....you know that thing we did on the N64 with golden eye...is pretty much non-existant...and yet our TV's are generally bigger than ever

OR am I wrong? my first question is are there any relitivley recent games that make use of "in the same room" multiplayer?

AND...well why? is it purley greed? (an extra console/game per person) or is there somone other cost/technicla reason?

(yeah I know this is one main point of the wii...but...well Im not a fan of the wii)
I guess it depends on the friends you have and the level of commitment all of you have to get together.

At least once a week unless something comes up, my friends and I come together at a friends house and have a game night. We all bring our own TVs and our own 360s. Sometimes we all play different games and just talk, and sometimes we all hook into my the one friend's LAN box and and play Halo or Borderlands.

Now this last week, they had the get together at a different home, and I couldn't come because I had something I had to get done, but having a good internet connection and Live is very helpful since I was able to join in with them later that night at my home.

But my group of friends do get together in the same room, so it isn't dead. Halo is the pure definition of in the same room play, with one TV, but you do like my friends and I do, bringing all of our TVs together and systems with a LAN box, games that don't allow for it are easy to turn into in the room with friends games.

Also several months back, I got that Risk game from XBLA, and that can be played in the same room on one system. I've actually played a few rounds with one of my friends.

In my case, yeah. Splitscreening sessions and LAN parties are few and far between - It's much more sensible for me and my mates to stay at our own places, able to use our whole screens, and all the benefits of being at home. It's less social, I suppose - But more logical.

MW2 had Spec-Ops which was fun, Black Ops and W@W had Zombies, Halo ODST and Reach had Firefight and Gears of War has Horde... you get the idea. I know you can do those online, but they're still very fun offline.

For me it seems more and more games are adding a cooperative campaign, while playing agaisnt eachother split screen is going completely out the window, shooters seem to only be able to manage to players at the most, making even system link not worth the bother as you can still only play 2v2, i couldnt get over the latest burnouts/need for speeds being single player only unless your online >.<.

It very much annoys me a that a lot of games these days only go for online multiplayer and not local.
Local multiplayer is still alive, but barely and is slowly dieing.

If it's the Wii then yeah...Sure it has a number of great and loyal franchises but in general it has less triple A blockbuster games.. and it is, technically speaking, the most inferior gaming platform out of the three (four if you count PC).

Maybe I'm just a dinosaur, but I pretty much only play multiplayer locally. My (old, backwards-compatible) PS3 sees a lot of old PS2 fighting games and 4-player LittleBigPLanet... and my house has a LAN party room with three gaming PCs and space for 5 more.

I really don't like online multiplayer, more often than not... but it's not the games that turn me off of it so much as the people.

You know what a problem with some games that even have couch multiplayer? The split screens are fucking vertical side by side. Developers think it's a good idea because screens have gotten wide, but it's just counter intuitive. Most games are horizontal, which means you'll being looking left and right more often then you are looking up or down, so this kind split screen just makes things difficult and uncomfortable.

Sorry I didn't stick to op's topic.

My dad, my little brother, and I play xbox every other weekend. I have spent hours trying to find games that we could all play. My dad can't use the controller for shooters, and since I have much more practice in most competitive games are not fair. Here are the games we play:

Crimson Alliance(All players on same screen up to 4, RPG.)
Blur (4 player local split-screen, driving)
Aegis Wing (All players on same screen up to 4, arcade spaceship game)
Castle Crashers (All players on same screen up to 4, not sure the genre beat em up?)

Hell I don't know really, when I was younger and my house was the sort of hangout area for my friends we played a lot of split screen. Now that I'm older and everyone has job, and more responsibility, and time constraints its easier to play online for us.

Still I don't really agree, with the attitude multiplayer means playing with your friends in the same room, that's just silly.
