The question I ask here is: is a rapist who worse than someone who takes people to the limits of pain for pleasure (non-sexual).

PS I'm not trying to trivialise either of these things. As always, keep the discussion civil.
Rape can be a form of torture. as torture is such a vague term, this question is without meaning.

Bad escapist! Bad! I thought we'd kicked this habit!

OT: They are both terrible life-altering events and I feel it would be trivialising of me to try and guess which is `worse` as I have not experienced either and cannot know.
I think anyone who commits either is a scumbag.
Well done. This was a test to see if the Escapist could move beyond the sea of rape...and you passed. I owe you all cookies if we ever meet in person
Have you not noticed that even while we were having threads on rape, people were telling others to shut up? Phasmal really isn't doing anything other than what she normally does dude :p

OT: Rape can be used as a form of torture, question irrelevant.

I nearly typed formal torture, whoops. "Good sir, please kindly hand me the probe" "Here you are" "thank you jenkins, onwards with misery I say!".

Goddammit late night foruming.

They're both violations of a person. I'd say that rape is a bigger threat to most people than other forms of torture. For the united states, the rate is around 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men. In terms of big picture harm, I'd say rape has hurt more people than torture.

But then again, having someone peel my fingernails off with rusty pliers is also beyond the scope of my imagination. I'm going to say I'd put both on my list of things I wouldn't want anyone to experience, and would require lots of therapy if I ever went through.

And it depends on whose being tortured, some people actually find pleasure in it. My evidence being from this one guy I won't mention...

But it's got to be torture that's worse overall.
Lots of people enjoy sex too, but there's as much difference between sex and rape as there is between BDSM and real torture. People who are really tortured don't get safe words.

Incredibly hard to say, because there's no real right answer. Rape and torture aren't exactly mutually exclusive and both generally cause lasting physical and mental damage on the victim. Therefore, I consider them equal.

Rape IS torture. That is to say, torture takes many forms. There are many ways to hurt someone physically, many to hurt mentally, and of course...there is hurting them sexually. Rape is just a sub-category. Since you can't rape the willing, to do so to someone IS torture, because they remain violated, have traumas and nightmares, and often fear any possibility of relationship for years on end, maybe permanently.

Is coffee worse than tea? Well, yes it is but that's not the point.

OT: What? Why?!
Can't we just agree that they're both terrible things that nobody wants happening to them? Why do we have to quantify everything like this, there's never going to be (or at least i hope not) a situation where somebody is going to be asking "Would sir like rape or torture for dessert?", and then you will be like "Well, I did the maths behind this and asked around on the internet, and I'd prefer to be raped rather than tortured thanks". NO.

Comparing the two is like prioritizing which threads out of gender politics and rape need to go, they both need to go (hint hint). Rape and torture are both extremely bad, they're both very non-objective for the victim and saying one is worse than the other is just pointless, and possibly insulting to those who's life has been ruined by either.

Hey, you can like tea all you want, but how DARE you hate on coffee like that!

In any event, I do agree with you. I don't like these comparisons because it makes one traumatic event seem more bearable than the other. Does it really matter? They're both terrible and can ruin a person.

Rape is used as a method of torture. Torture is anything and everything that can be done to a person to inflict pain, depression, etc.

rape = torture; torture = rape. Their definitions are broadly comparable if you can connect the dots.

Concept is right. Torture and rape really aren't all that much different - sure, the particulars might be different, one has red hot clamps and electricity and the other typically has unwanted penetration, but the end result is pretty much the same - a violation of your mind and body.

I'd personally say torture. Rape, to me, always seemed more of a mental/emotional thing, since the physical side of it probably isn't what affects a majority of rape victims so deeply. And for me, physical pain is far, far worse than emotional pain. So I'd be more scared of raw physical torture, honestly.

Depends on the type of torture really.

Here are some tortures that i believe are worse than rape. In a nice list.
1) a power drill through any part of the body, especially the privates.
2) boiling tar and anything having to do with it.
3) having your bones snap through your body forcefully.
4) the torture rack.
5) the pear of anguish (look it up)

... while googling pear of anguish myself i found this, a nice list of tortures far worse than rape. This includes the pear of anguish.

I have never been raped, but i can not imagine how it would be worse, or even really comparable, to these.

I'm inclined to agree with the rest of everyone.

To me, rape is a form of torture. I've always believed they went hand in hand.

The "pear of anguish" is an especially bad one, but there was a worse one that's name escaped me. Basically it would give you an extreme circumcision.

OH GREAT, it's this thread again.
Asking which is worse is like asking which arm you would want to lose, both are horrible things to have happen to you, you don't need to try and make one worse than the other.

Well considering rape in non-consensual contact of a sexual nature, and torture is prolonged non-consensual abuse of any kind (including rape) I'd say that torture can be potentially more painful and more humiliating than rape just because encompasses a much wider variety of physical and mental anguish.

Might as well ask whether it's worse to be shot in the face or murdered.

Here's a novel idea. Actions that are of a sufficiently vile nature are not comparable, or at the very least, not worth comparing.
