I am playing Resident Evil 4 for the first time now, and are loving it.
I have heard from a lot of people that it is really scary and that the plot is also supposed to be really weel writen. Personally I did not think it was scary, at all, and that some(a lot) of the parts of the game is hilarious. I find myself laughing during parts of the game (giant statue of midget napoleon chasing you).
I did also think the plot was really weak, and are thinking it migth be a parody during some parts, while other times it was trying to be serius.
So I was wondering if this is only me (and some of my friends) who thinks this (and are therefore insane) or are this a common opinion on the game.

Whoever told you it was scary or well written was obviously having a laugh. Everyone knows RE stopped being scary after the third game.

Nah its not scary. One of the best games I've ever played but not scary. Its pretty much a straight action game, compared to the survival horror route of old though.

Yes. I got scared shitless by the opening village assault and never played again because when every time I considered it I would collapse in cold sweats, sucking my thumb and begging for my mummy.

but that's just cause I'm a pussy of epic proportions.

There are a few really terrifying parts, actually. I don't know how far you've gotten and if you've reached any of those parts -- or maybe you're just really hard to scare. xD But me and my manly guy buddy both agreed on certain parts being particularly scary -- and even more scary when you play it in the dark completely drunk, but maybe that's just us. (The right hand part scared me shitless -- and I really really disliked those invincible dudes in the labs, and the chainsaw dudes kind of gave me the willies for awhile. BUUUUT then again, it was my first survival horror game so I could be bias in that I have nothing to compare it to)

UM. The plot however enh... well, I dunno, the dialogue is hilarious. So I can't really assess it properly without giggling to myself. It's kind of EPIC how badly it's written actually.

Maybe I should do a second run through and then give reviewing it another go....

Hahahahhaah. You should play it again. :p I would love to hear how you react to some of the later monsters. XD

BUT ACTUALLY -- the first time playing my run in with the chainsaw guy in the village gave me a heartattack. I think it was just the damn sound effects and his laughing that really gave me the chills. And his faceless self walking hastily towards you as you try to reload your shot gun in time to not get your head chopped off. *shudder*

No, Resident Evil 4 is not scary. It's just an action game with some survival horror elements.

For me it was just cause I didn't know what to do. I looked at a guide later to find your meant to run around and fuck about in loads of houses in the area, but when all you can think is "I LIKE MY HEAD ATTACHED, FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF!!!" you tend to throw strategy out of the window and just run around shooting like a madman at anything that's wielding any kind of weapon and/or piece of farming equipment.

Plus my aim is total shit and I generally suck at gaming, so I quickly ran out of ammo. Then the chainsaw...

*laughs ass off* Ya, I had my friend over when I started playing and he was kind of my instruction manuel. Though his instructions were a bit complex to me at first, "Shoot them in the head, run up to them and kick them, and then knife them to death." I WAS LIKE WTF. But I s'pose he told me that for a reason because I found later in the game I should've listened when I had NO AMMO and I had to resort to knifing the shit out of everything that came my way and hoping to God they didn't spout a parasite out of their neck and stab me with their tentacles. Apparently the game doesn't give you a whole lot of ammo (especially later on) so you kind of have to conserve it a bit.

But I feel ya, initially I had aim like utter crap and did the whole shooting about liek a madman play style, but it gets easier once you keep playing. I really do recommend you give it another go! It's really such an amazing game.

Is it well-written? No. Is the plot silly? Yes. However, it almost seems as though capcom knows how hilarious their dialogue etc is, as they almost seem to be parodying themselves at times. The silly plot adds to the fun really!

As for it being scary, the first Resident Evil game I played was RE:make for the gamecube, just me and my friend at night in the dark when I was twelve, even now it still scares me, so you can imagine what I was like then! Compared to that, Resident Evil 4 is a walk in the park; however, it can still be really intense, I often find myself getting very nervy when playing some parts. To be honest, the only part that genuinely scared me is the part in the laboratory with the monsters that you have to kill with the heat-scope. Just hearing their creepy breathing... bleehhh!! haha I really don't like them :p

Yeah! Right up till you get the shotgun and just blow the kneecaps off anything in a 4m radius.

"Salazar!? How did you?!"
"We jacked the line..."

Scary? No

Uneasy? Yes

It's not scary by any means but it is kinda edgy in some places, in my opinion, hearing the revving of a chainsaw or the grunt of a garrador in the distance with no idea where it's coming from makes you slightly uneasy.

As for the story, it's blatantly a piss take, it's to cliché and cheesey not to be. I love it. some of Salazar's lines are hilarious (Where's the satisfying sound of one's impalement?).

RE4 goes down as one of my favorite games ever, I really do love it and have completed it at least 10 times over 3 different consoles (GC, PC, Wii). The PC version was fucking horrible though.

Part of the charm of Resident Evil is the campness of the whole thing, it's normal that you find it funny.

As for scary, there were two parts that scared the shit out of me:

The sewer confrontation with Salazar's right hand, and the first time I met a regenerator

It did have a few unnerving parts such as when you're trying to reactive an elevator while Napoleon's 'Hand' thing was was attacking you with no way to actually kill it (I don't think you could anyway..I might be wrong), and also when you first meet the regenerators about two minutes before you get the device that teaches you how to actually kill them.
Overall though, yeah it wasn't very frightening due to how much fire power you could carry around.
Although that probably helped me enjoy it more since I'm a massive coward! =D
Still one of my favorite games.

It wasn't scary for me and i laughed quite a lot during the dialogue's between Leon and Lil Napoleon. However i do have a friend that has an irrational fear of chainsaw's thanks to that game.
