Is sexting really a big problem as the media makes it seem?

I think the main problem is risque pictures, which count as child porn if you 18. And that is just a whole world of legal nasty

That and those pics can be pretty embarrasing later in life
I assume you mean under 18, and yeah I think that's the real issue that the media is getting worked up about. This "sexting" thing, although really pointless and stupid, doesn't sound like that big a deal. However I would think they'd be a time and place for that sort of thing, ie not when with a large group. Although the thought that young teenagers (ie 16 and under) are doing it does concern me a bit.

No, it still makes up only a small percentage of all people do it, though I worry that the media telling people about it will encourage it.

A friend mine did, what happen was his mum went on the internet to see every text and picture he recived. His mom is also a real ***** and didn't bring this up 3 weeks later intill she found out, and I was there at the house. She then began to grill me on his pics and text as if I knew everthing about it, which I didn't.

I've talked to a lot of people who are in the right age group for this kind of practice, and almost none of them have ever gotten any "sexts".
My god, you make it sound like you went on the street with a clipboard. :D
No, I've sent and received these things. Sometimes you're in a relationship with someone, they're away for a while and it just sort of happens. How does that bother the media? It doesn't. I wish news organisations would focus on actual news and the challenging of authority, but they don't so... I don't regret what I did though.
It's a different story if it's a forced thing. I mean, I did this with my ex and if some dude just goes "hi, this is my penis" to some girl or vice versa, then that's not "sexting", that's sexual harrassement. Straight up.

If the young people where not sending sexually explicit text messages then they would be calling each other and saying sexually explicit things that way, nothing can help that. Give young people technology and they will try to use it for sex, it's just a fact of life.

Response before reading original post: Nothing is as big a problem as the media makes it seem.
Now to read it and see if I'm right. *reads* I was right!

A problem? No. Pointless? Ho yeah.

The media just likes to make anything that is even remotely sexual in the public sphere seem like the devil is crawling out of the ground.

The only person I know who's done it was a friend of a friend who as it turned out was the victim of a cruel practical joke and that picture wound up posted online. The poor bastard.

Seeing as how I had no knowledge of this being an issue before clicking this thread, it is safe to assume that:
a) It is not a serious problem.
b) I don't read enough news.

Well, I'm 15 and my 13 year old friend asked me if I wanted to sext last summer. Never actually received any though as I'm good at changing subjects without people even noticing (oh, and her boyfriend walked in lulz).

no but to be honest I have in fact seen one, they're retarded and people make a big deal over nothing. let me give you a hint, this isn't really porno grade stuff, if I wasn't told who the picture was of I never would have guessed, they're taken on crappy phone camera's, you can barley tell the person is nude, I never would have if not told. although I don't know, maybe there are people out there taking picture on $500 cameras then transferring them to their phone.

It's not bad...in most cases...but it's idiotic.

you can even get charged with possession of child pornography is the naked picture is of someone under 18 (in the United states, at least)

I don't see the issue honestly. Nobody gets pregnant from sexting. The only issue is if the guy/girl puts the pictures up everywhere but in that case it's your own damn fault for giving nude pictures to a complete douchebag.

If someone tried that shit with me I would just say, "hey I can drive, why not some real sex?" Also if you get pics from your girlfriend or boyfriend and they piss you off, if say you're a teenager sending that shit out for revenge is a felony.

Long as no underage stuff is involved i think its fine, if two teens underage want to sex thats ok too so long as theirs no pictures.
