Is Shovel Knight worth playing if you don't like most platformers. I happen to have a low tolerace for failing in platformers due naturally sucking at most of them. while I can slog thought many of hour of boredom play though the poorly paced first witcher game until it finally got good.

I don't mind platforming elements in game that is mainly about something else as long it not done so poorly that it frustrates.
when main purpose(s) and gameplay is platforming then I am usually inclined to dislike said games or get bored fairly quickly.

Thomas was alone- I played about half of it before getting bored and never playing it agian. but from what I played it did a good job of giving shapes a personality.

limbo- playe 2/3rds of it then got bored but still respect the game for It atmosphere. near the half way point I more or less forcing my self to play the game. at somepoint 2/3 the way thought there was a time puzzle that failed a few times. that is what wore down the little interest I had left in playing this game.

every 2d Mario game I played- I never cared enough for any 2d Mario game enough to even coming close to beating them. At best I can play them in short burst and before getting bored and I would have to force my self to keep coming back to those games.

Closure- I like the atmosphere and mechanics of the game are conceptually cool. After 3 hours I lost interest ever playing the game again.

Briad- I played this game in about an hour. I swear I felt like I was played this game for at least 2 hours. When you feel like that it is a sign your very bored.

capsized- I got as part of a humble bundle and gave it a shot. I played for less then an hour and came out feeling meh. The best I can say about this game is it looks nice.

dust force- A precision speed running platformer, I played for 13 minutes. I could very quickly see this is the kind of I will never like.

super meat boy- I don't like game at all but I can respect what it does.

too lazy to type about anymore platformer I did not care for but I can make the list longer.

Most platformer I have played at best in a category I made for steam called "Meh but interesting/respectable" but there are rare exceptions.

The Rare Exceptions:

trine- I got frustrated one or two levels away from beating the game and feel no desire to continue the game but overall trine was a good game. few platformers ever hold my attention anywhere near the 11 hours steam claims I played.

trine 2- I liked better then the first trine and steam claims I played 31 hour of the game. what both game did that appealed in a way that many platfromers about creative thinking, and it's fairytale like atmosphere. combat is decent and the grappling hook/rope is fun to use. There was almost always multiple ways to solve puzzle and traversing the environment. on top of that trine 2 looks fucking beautiful, to point of a screenshot can easily make a good wallpaper for a computer.

VVVVVV- some how I like this despite dying hundreds of times. I am going to guess the music was Pushing me Onwards while was cursing out loud on occasion. other then that why still like this game is almost a mystery to me. It is on the list of game I want to replay one day.

I have come to the conclusion I will get it at some point either during as part of a humble bundle or on sale at the price of $5 or less. If I like the game enough playing many hours of it then will be a pleasant surprise. at the least, I will be able to say I gave the game a chance while not loosing anything of great value i don't like it.

Well I can't really tell you based on those games. There's no combat in those games worth speaking of. Shovel knight is an action platformer. Platforming is like 1/3 of it. The other 2/3 is combat. With a shovel. It's pretty good. If you get it on a good sale, I can't imagine you regretting it. It's more like Rogue Legacy, except better.

Shovel Knight is an excellent modern take on the classic 8 bit action platformer. It owes a lot to games like Mega Man, Ducktales and Castlevania. If by "don't like platformers" you mean you don't like modern platformers then, yes, you may enjoy Shovel Knight. If by "don't like platformers" you mean that you don't like them at all then, no, you won't like Shovel Knight.. and I'm not sure why you're even asking.

well I am asking because I hear it is good game and due exceptions existing to general feeling of not like platformers that much.

I never play any of the Mega Man game before nor have I played any of the Castlevania games. I don't see what so great about mega man from just watching it being played. Some games not interest watch but fun to play so that is not saying much.

I think it's more like a proper Legend of Zelda 2. Some platforming, mostly combat utilizing basic and magic moves, collect mostly arbitrary points for killing enemies and finding secrets. Shovel Knight is waaaaay more forgiving, less grindy, and easier to control than Zelda 2.

It's linear like Mario or Megaman games, it controls like Castlevania, it has a lot of way to approach how you beat stages... again like Megaman.

Es good.

Ever play those old school 2d platformers? Well it's them games, fuck all special about it.

People are praising it 'cos people love nostalgia, X com, syndicate, new star wars, new jurassic park, stryder ... you get the idea. Why do you think 2d side scrollers from indies are so common? Not just 'cos they are easier to make but 'cos they sell on nostalgia.

Then again I haven't played it, so it could be amazing and im talking out of my arse. To me it looks just like Mario with more direct combat.

Or people actually liked the games. I picked up the original X-COM when I heard about a remake. Loved it through the interface was.., cumbersome. But then I find out the remake is a FPS my interest waned till the spiritual successor came around and loved that one.

As for the game, it's not bad. Shove Knight himself feels a little weird to control(usually when you want to make small movements) and certain areas are kinda BS(Plague Knight stage, I'm looking at you). But it has a certain charm and polish that other indie games have(like Super Meatboy or Dustforce.)

Pick it up and you should enjoy it. Worst case, wait for a sell and get it cheap.

And why did they like them? They hearkened back to the good ol days, when times were more simple. Simple ass games with merry chip tunes, wall chickens and I'm guessing a little bit of nintenhard.

Actually I was more going on about XCOM than Shovel Knight.

But there's nothing wrong with going back to more simple games. The amount I can understand disliking. Bring something new or polish what you have.

Put it this way. As a child, I think my entire 2D platformer library consisted of a single Mario title and Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. I'm too young to give a shit about retro platformer nostalgia.

I fucking loved Shovel Knight.

I'm sure plenty of people do enjoy it for nostalgia reasons. But I enjoyed it because it's simply well made, charming, and challenging. That is all. The only other 2d platformers I've enjoyed so much in the past few years have been Rogue Legacy and the Oddworld remake (that one had nostalgia going for it). And even that one isn't strictly 2D.

Anyway, to answer the OP - no, you won't like it. Shovel Knight is pretty damn hard once you get to the later stages. If you have no patience for difficulty in platformers you won't get on very well with it.

You know I asked the same question to myself for a different reason. Basically I have no nostalgic love for NES platformers because they were before my time. Turns out the game stands out on its own.

In your case however, I would say this wouldn't change your mind about platformers. They are my favorite genre so I gave the game a shot and I was happy I did. Shovel Knight is pretty challenging though especially in the beginning and middle of the game with the end game a little less so after all the upgrades are unlocked. You'll get bored rather quickly as while the characters are endearing the story isn't anything to write home about. The "gimmick" with Shovel Knight is that it is a 8-bit NES inspired game to a tea. If that's not your thing, don't bother or at least wait for a price drop.

You list a lot of great games in that genre that you simply didn't enjoy.

Shovel Knight is a great game.

So, no. I don't think you would enjoy it. :p

Shovel Knight is a great 2D platformer.

it's more old school Mega Man then Mario though, so keep that in mind.

I suggest you to NOT play Shovel Knight, base the games I saw you played.
If you are very easily frustrated by the difficulty of a game, Shovel Knight isn't for you.
However with that said, Shovel Knight is a 10/10 game for me. Very colorful, enjoyable, funny, challenging and a lot of FREE DLC for the future. A must for the lovers of this genre.
Worth Playing [for the others]

Well I loved it, being 23, not getting/playing my first console till I was 8, which was a playstation, I'm too young to /have/ nostalgia for the NES/SNES 2D style games, I thoroughly enjoyed them when I played them in the early 2000s because they were good games, There's been plenty of games that I had genuine nostalgia for that have been pants when I've played them now, but great games will stay great regardless of nostalgia or age; Megaman X is one of my favourite series, I've played XCOM Enemy Unknown to death because it was a great game (even better with Long War)despite never having had contact with the original X-COM games till last month.

True, Shovel Knight isn't ground breaking or original, but is it fun and does it play well? Yes. And sometimes that's all you need, to play well and be fun. They're not professing to be special. Why have a chip on your shoulder because people enjoy them?

Well, I guess that settles it. If you don't find the appeal of games like Megaman or Castlevania, Shovel Knight is not really for you.

It is fine, though... I would still keep an eye on it in case it gets a massive discount.

I've seen shovel knight on top games of the year lists. Which astounds me, how can a very generic idea with the only thing going for it being nostalgia be one of the best games of the year? Hundreds of games are released but this is top 5?

Sure fun and play well are important but shouldn't that be all games? Candy crush plays well and millions have fun with it but like shoval knight, its been done a million times and adds nothing new but its still top 5 of the year?

I have another question that people in this tread might be able to ask. There is an independent game store near where I live that specializes in retro gaming. Recently they just ordered in a shipment of USB NES pads used mostly for emulators. What I want to know is whether or not Shovel Knight will bind well to an NES pad. Would this be playable?

mm well I didn't realise it was getting /that/ much hype, I didn't realise that was where you were coming from, thought you had an issue with it just being. Saying that, 2014 was a pretty naff year for games so I'd be hard pressed not to put Shovel Knight on a theoretical top 5 just because most things have been pretty mediocore, broken or disapointing.
