How on earth could any of you possibly know if the universe is infinite or finite?

Well Einstein did say "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity," but then he went on to say "I'm not sure about the former"..

Anyway, I believe that space is finite but bounded/confined to "free space" which is expanding. If that makes sense.

Another question, How on earth could you know that the universe if everything? That is complete speculation. I have yet to hear someone say something about how the universe is that isn't complete speculation.

The universe is infinite by definition. Space might have a wall round the edge somewhere, but everything on the other side is still part of the universe.

It's believed to be. The bigger question is, if its expanding, just what the fuck is it expanding in to?

Something else that intrigues me (I think about this a surprising amount in between what people I'd get off with) is the theory of Multi verses. So you have our universe, which is a box for instance, then just like... More space, then another box (universe).

Oh yeah, take a look at this: http://buytaert.net/we-are-small-and-insignificant

Be warned, your mind will probably implode. It's quite astonishing.

No, if you had telescope very, and i mean VERY powerful and you pointed it to the sky you could see the Earth.

[HEADING=2]LIGHT DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY.[/HEADING]
Thank you.

OT: No. The expansion of the Universe will last only until it runs out of energy, at which point it will begin to collapse in on itself. Of course, when it runs out of usable free energy, we'll hit the point of Heat Death and no-one will know anyway.

Yes. The Universe is expanding faster than ever. It's expanding at about 71 km/s/Mpc.
No it isn't infinite, if it was then there wouldn't be night because the sky would be full of stars and light.

That has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.

Oops, I meant to say no.

The universe is indeed thought to be finite, but it is so unbelieveably large, that we might as well consider it to be infinite. It's kinda like comparing a protozoa to a Nimitz class aircraft carrier. The size of the protozoa is negligable when compared to the size of the carrier. Both have finite masses and dimensions, but comparing the two is difficult because of how far apart their sizes are - you might as well not even try.

I also feel that I should point out that if the big bang theory is indeed correct, then the universe originated from a single point in spacetime. Therefore it cannot be infinitely large since it started from a finite point and has been expanding for a finite period of time, albeit a VERY long time.

I don't think the Earth has been around long enough for that to happen yet.

It's infinite in the same sense that a circle is infinite. You can go round and round as much as you want, but it still has a definite and finite circumference.

Well no, as in a link above areas of the night sky that appear black to us have thousands of galaxies in them. If the universe was infinite then not all light would reach us ever anyway.

'If you travel in a straight line forever you would end up where you started eventually' Assuming this were true then you would have no end of the universe, and then you could assume everything could be the edge of the universe, but then we know that we aren't on the edge. /Brain hurt.
