I've read through alot of answers which are all full of complete bullshit, i'll be the first (i think) to answer this correctly:

We Don't Know!

There is no imaginable way to proove any of the claims made in this thread, its all theories, which is why this entire question is about as stupid as any other subject based on theories/belief.

OK, i will answer the question, SPACE is infinate, as space is nothing and there is infinate nothing, as there logically has to be,
Since when was space nothing? Space contains vacuum energy. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_energy]
Yes it containes energy, but this energy has infinate range and can be infinatly small, its bloody strange but true, therefore infinate space, this is most apparent in the weak nuclear force which is noted as having infinate range, so yes space does have energy but effectivly no energy the further out you go, i was simplifying things. soz.

However in our known universe its about 3 degrees kelvin background energy btw

I know that, but the fact that the line is simultaneously straight and arriving at it's beginning is what we can't understand.
Sure you can. Imagine for a minute you where outside the rest of the expanding matter bubble. Since there is nothing outside it the "universe" it would technically be smaller then its schwartzchild radius making it a black hole.
Oh dear, sorry, I don't follow you, I've reached the edge of my knowledge on this.

The universe is expanding and yes space is infinite!

As for the post above me, you're an idiot and your logic is flawed... Light travels both as particles and waves. they dissipate over time and space, not to mention the dust other particles in space that would hinder your theory even more so.
Sorry but if you believe the Big Bang your the idiot; finite starting point+ finite expanding speed+ finite time to expand, doesn't equal infinity.

Well it may feel stupid to you and it does to me to some extent but in the end people like a good debate and/or other have an insatiable hunger for answers.

We have no idea just really, really vague speculations on a small amount of potential evidence it really is mindblowing but godamn it if there is not a beer planet full of chocolate lesbians I am going to feel really, really fucking cheated.

No... not infinate, just massive. Nothing can in reality be infinite as infinity is merely a useful theoretical concept. Thousand monkeys on a thousand typewriters, in infinite time they would write shakespear. In reality they never would as infinity can never be reached

You're going to want to look it up if you want a real answer. Best I can so is this:

If you go in a staright line, you'll eventually get back to where you started.
Cargando said:
Yes. Of course it is. It's infinite and expanding.
That doesn't work. If it's infinite, it can't expand.
Aren't things infinite because they expand constantly?
The best way to describe it is, imagine that you had an infinatly long pole, hold it, the volume is infinate, double the width, its still infinate, double the height, it is still infinate, it doesnt matter if it is expanding or contracting, it is still infinate, Just to clarify, we are talking about space, not the universe, space has no mass therefore can be infinate as it can contain infinatly small amounts of energy, hope that is a help

Put me down for infinite.

You can go one way and you can keep going that way forever. Trippy as fuck if you saw a sign that said "Please turn around, you have gone too far."

...then what is it expanding into?

OT: No, it's still expanding from the Big Bang.
The question is what lies beyond
I've wondered this myself. If the universe is expanding, there must be something beyond the universe that is bigger than the universe, allowing it to expand indefinitely! Which would mean the universe has an end.

So no, space is not infinite.

P.S.: OP, since you're new here, I'll be easy on you. Spelling, Grammar, and Punctuation. The three Pillars of Escapism. Learn them. Master them. Become them.

Corrected for you.

OT: I like to think that in 'the void' beyond our Universe is a giant frat house party, slowly being absorbed by our stupid boring Universe of shit and bright colours.

Also, how come the OP spells it wrong, everyone corrects him but then some people continue to miss the fact there's no a in it and some people still miss that, even when quoting said people.

The universe is flat, infinite, and constantly expanding at a faster rate as time goes on.

Current scientific theory is the space is infinite and expanding.
This is not a contradiction.

Take the number-line. That is infinite in every direction.
Now stretch the distance between each number to twice it's current length.
You have now expanded that number line despite the fact it is infinite.
The universe is expanding in exactly the same way.

caz105 said:
The universe started out at a single point. In order for it to be infinitely big then it has had to be expanding for an infinite amount of time
That's not true.

If you took the natural number line and compressed every distance between each number to zero, then the number line would be a single point, but if the distance between each number was even slightly greater than zero, then the number line would be infinite again.

My brother is a mathemetician, he tried to explain to me once that infinity and 2*infity are different numbers even though they're both infinite (I hope I'm not totally butchering his statement here). To be honest, I didn't get it at all. But if he's right that'd mean that the infinite universe could indeed expand beyond infinity into... more infinity... I guess. Huh.
