Well, you used the key word there. The "original" trilogy. Think about this: the writing in Star Wars is terrible, the acting is worse (even from Harrison Ford!), and the plot is muddled. But Star Wars had something that trumps all that: it was new. It was something nobody had done before.

The prequels had everything the originals did: excellent special effects and music coupled with terrible acting and atrocious writing. But for older fans particularly, it lacked any sense of doing anything new.

One of the things I liked most about the originals was the sillyness of it. The little bits in it when you would have to giggle.

The (Millenium?) falcon is on the run from the empire again, Han and Chewie are trying desparatly to repair the damaged systems, Han's in a service hole thing, trying to fix something, the ship is hit by a blast and the tool box falls on him. or the first time we see yoda, who just seems like some senile old coot who picks fights with droids.
Things like that.

Of course they're silly. That doesn't mean they're BAD. Although I always had issues with the first part of the first film (or fourth, if you like it that way), when rebels and stormtroopers are standing literally yards away from each other and the rebels can't even hit one of them, even when they're compressed into a small balster hole in the airlock. How the hell did they survive so long? Also, the line "Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper' was always so corny it made me crack up.

How can you ask such a thing now? SWTOR is going to be huge!
Yes I liked the original triology, alas the prequel was bad... sometimes they managed it though.
There are no such things as Midiclorians! the Force is magical! B'ah!
I look forward to venture across the galaxy as a Jedi Councelor or a Sith Inquisitor.
(haven't decided yet) This shit is going to be huge. so No, star wars ain't silly... George Lukas on the other hand, is.

The prequels were as good or better than the originals. Compare the obi-wans...which is better? and the thing i dont get is why the older story has newer looking stuff...apocalypse or something? or is that what the empire was doing-hunting down new technology and going retro!
I go for the later, lol. Darth Vader is simply trying to bring back the 70s!

Seriously, what's the deal with the midichlorians, and certain fans going all nerd rage about their "introduction" in the Phantom Menace?

Please explain.

What could be strange about incest, a talking bear and a huge slug that eats frogs?

Although the opening scene always takes my breath away when you get a feel for the sheer size of the star destroyer...

Then vader...AWESOME!

I love the original trilogy. I despise Phantom Menace, semi-dislike Attack Of The Clones (take out the awful romance dialogue and it might be okay), and did enjoy most of Revenge Of The Sith (except, again, for the awful romance dialogue). But that doesn't mean I can't poke a little fun at the series...

Silly? What's so silly about hiding away the potential salvation of an entire galaxy by having him live under his real name and on his turned-evil father's home planet...only to have the two droids who served his father (one of whom was built by his father) just happen to come into his possession and help convince him to leave the planet on a mission to rescue a princess who just happens to be his twin sister?

Definition of "Coincidence": Accidents in a busy place.

Also...how this particular conversation should have gone:

BEN'S SPIRIT: "That is the reason why your sister remains safely anonymous."
LUKE: "Leia! Leia is my sister!"
BEN'S SPIRIT: "Your insight serves you well."
LUKE: "Yeah, my insight and the fact that she's just about the only girl in this entire fucking trilogy."
BEN'S SPIRIT: "Bury your feelings deep down, Luke. They do you credit, but they could be made to serve the Emperor."
LUKE: "Feelings? I...oh shit, I can't believe I KISSED her! And I ogled her while she was wearing the metal bikini! GAAAAHH!"
YODA'S SPIRIT: "Disgust I sense in you. Vomit you should. Feel better you will afterward."

I think Star Wars is terribly silly. And I would be okay with that but for the fact that people bend down and worship the story regularly. One person I have met tried to defend it with expanded universe material and ignoring the movies, and that is my problem right there. Star Wars is Lucas's universe. If it only gets good when someone else writes it, then it is not a good foundation. My biggest problem are the force users. The Jedi morality is annoying to me because it bans so many things that are just normal, but the Sith are so ridiculously evil that it cannot possibly a logical choice for any not evil person to join them.
I appreciate Star Wars for what it did for Sci-fi movies and the genre on a whole, but I just find it too stupid and silly to take as seriously as many do.

I just registered to escapist after frequenting here for Yahtzee's reviews, (so there is the intro I guess). But this thread caught my eye, and as an avid Star Wars fan, I'd like to reply.

*Deep breath*

While in context to the question, yes, Star Wars is silly to down right hilarity. If you looked at the bare bones of Star Wars, and not at the "cinematic achievement" it was, is, and ever will be, you will find a slew of bizarre things.

Laser Sword swinging, robe wearing munks, wielding the power of "why are we here?", chasing and fighting those that follow the Sith. Sith, are like the biker gangs of Star Wars, they were popular in the 50's, but everyone realized that greasy hair and tattoos were kind of a dieing breed and make you stick out like a sore thumb. They also choke people with the power of "what happens when we die?".

But, again, that is the bare bones of it. You don't have to fully appreciate everything Star Wars is, was, and ever will be as a film, because that's only half the experience. It's silly to see people fighting over "Who shot first?" (before that got taken away). "Why is Boba Fett cool?" All these questions are what make Star Wars fun, because it is silly.

If Star Wars took itself any more serious then it tried to be, it would be like every Star Trek episode I always seem to stumble across. That's not a shot directly, I know Star Trek has their thing and everything, but the point I'm trying to make is that Star Wars doesn't take itself serious, which is why, chaos ensues. Every time I watch Star Trek (again, maybe it's just my luck), they just seem to be like what America is doing to the world now. Police the galaxy.

But Star Wars is the epitome of Galactic Epic. That I am currently aware of, and not stemming into the debate of books and comics and what not, ask yourself who has the most diverse range of species in one movie, and the answer is easily Star Wars. And they're doing stupid things. Look at the Mos Eisley Cantina scene. It's not camera angles or anything too detailed. It's that glimpse of the first T-shaped-head alien, with sparkly yellow eyes, that just pops right up. Like a Family Guy "remember the time...". Then it flashes to like a furry sloth with a straw for a nose, and a dude that looks like Satan. There's also a hammerhead shark in there too. (I know all the species, just "bare bone" it)

The gap between the first and second trilogy is simply that the first, wasn't fully meant to be taken seriously. Han Solo, case in point. While all this bad stuff is going down, he just wants to get by. He doesn't care. But this kid and this old guy show up, and next thing he knows, he's in a world of pain, all the while, being snarky. But, as a whole, it was simplistic, gritty, real, and sarcastic in of itself. It played on emotions, but never lost its charm. Like watching a Jawa try to walk in sand, it was a kid and/or midget.

The new trilogy, took the Star Trek route in story telling, and demanded to be taken seriously, with a love story shoved down your throat, even though we all knew what was going to happen in the end. There was too much talking. And the payoffs were let downs. But, while it demanded to be taken seriously, there is a lot of sillyness to be had. Yoda bouncing off walls, was cool for a minute, then you realized this is the crippled midget in Empire Strike Back that can barely move. Then there is the Droid Army... (Roger Roger). Jar Jar. Gungans in general. Having to take a submarine through a planet core. The flower fields of Naboo. And of course "Nooooooooooooooooooo". It was a let down entirely, because it was all political, all love, and everything, was overcooked. Like watching a Jawa try to walk in sand, and stepping in a pile of poop... all in CG.

But 1, 2, and 3 all at least maintained some Star Wars to it. While it wasn't the same experience, a lot of kids now have their own Star Wars trilogy to grow up with, and in that sense its cool. So that's not the issue.

My biggest disappointment though was when Anakin became Darth Vader, simply being knighted by Sidious in the room with a broken window, that Mace Windu just five seconds ago flew out of, with his arm chopped off.

I got a little off track, but take this for the rant that it is. But, I'm just trying to say, that the lore of Star Wars, outweighs any merits people try to give the films as cinematic achievements. And it was all a pipe dream on camera. Looking at documentaries and seeing backstage pictures of Star Wars... those guys didn't have a clue that the movie they were making was gonna be as big as it was. Everyone that was a part of it admitted it. If you don't think its silly to any degree, then life must be pretty dull, because it's silly to think that a movie STILL gets debated about to this day. Star Wars is a punchline. People love it, because anything can happen inside of that world. Anything your mind can think of, can be made better in the Star Wars universe.

So, yes, Star Wars is silly. Comedic. But like a squeaky fart during a serious movie. You're watching something amazing, but every once in a while, you'll find yourself noticing how clumsy it looks. But it's okay.

P.S.

Even if you don't want to believe Star Wars is silly in any degree, then theres at least some people out there with a sense of humor you lack, like the Washington National Cathedral, which touts a Darth Vader bust/gargoyle.

To a degree, yeah, it's silly. It was, to a degree, originally just a movie with spoofs off fantasy, history, and myth. Hell, the Empire had several things that were blatently ripped off Nazi iconography (The storm troopers and certain helmet designs come to mind). The scolling intro text was taken right out of the old Buck Rodgers films. The story was pulp fantasy and the setting was pulp scifi.

But that doesn't mean there's nothing to it. Lucus created an entire world based off our own, essentially characturing everything to a significant degree. Yeah, it went into dark territory in the prequel trilogy (which I liked the Palpatine's rise from nobody to galatic emperor in true American iconography), but all the serious elements balence out the silly elements to form a wonderful universe to explore in side story.

Lucas was going for a space nazi theme afterall, and he ripped off everything from westerns to the earlier sci fi films, but hey it worked :D
