Thanks for all the replies. I don't mean to turn this into a Mac vs PC debate - I have plenty of my own reasons for owning (and enjoying) my Mac, I just said that at the outset so people wouldn't just tell me to go with the PC version.

After searching around for a while online, it seems that you guys were right - Valve has been indeed promising a "major update" for at least the 360 version of The Orange Box that will include everything done for the PC version. It might not be free, though, which would stink, but whatever.

Since I don't get the chance to play consoles when I'm at school, it seems like this is just going to have to be a game that I keep in the back of my mind until more news eventually surfaces about the 360 version. I'm still unsure though - is it really as unplayably laggy online as it was when I tried it?

Quotes like these worry me, but a few others have said that it's just fine.

If you're always gonna have a mac, why not just dual boot with windows? The newest OS (leopard?) has Bootcamp implemented quite well. Hell, even the beta version is useful.
This is actually a good idea, thanks for giving me useful to work with. I'll look into that, but I'm not sure I would want to buy/download a windows OS and take the space to install it onto my hard drive just to play a few games. But if it's pretty easy/cheap, I'll definitely want to try it.

Do you mean The Orange Box for 360? Because I couldn't find it online. :( Thanks though!

The only crappy thing about running Windows on your Mac is that you (should) have to buy a legit copy of the OS. As for getting it 'just to play a few games', look at it like this: You can get crappy versions of the game and have to pay for extra content, or you can get fully supported versions of the game so that you can enjoy them the way they were meant to be. Consols have their perks... but for RPG's and FPS's, I think you might be happier with a little windows on your apple :p

In short "no"
In long "nooooo-"
*Spartan Smacks himself on the head*
"Bad Sparty, bad."
Basically, it's not worth it without the DLC, get it on PC.

There were a few posts that came after I started to respond, and I didn't see because I spent so much time searching for info before posting. Sorry.

Best bet, get it on PC, and dual-boot your mac, new macs all accept it pretty easy, and will open up a whole new world of gaming for you!

This might be of some use? http://forums.gamespace.net.au/steam_mac_oh_hells_yes-t12363.html?t=12363
That was really interesting.. and only $40 or so. Thanks a ton! I'll definitely look into that.

So here's the thing. I see what you're saying, but if Windows OS costs anything around what I'm expecting (between $70-$100), I would be paying for that, then paying for the game itself too. And as superior as PC gaming might be, I simply prefer playing on consoles. I don't use a mouse (trackpad yay!) for my computer, one of the key highlights of PC gaming, and we have a nice TV at home that I enjoy playing on, and I don't want to have to go all out of the way to tether my laptop to my tv to get that benefit. So while everyone might argue till the cows come home that PCs are objectively better than consoles for gaming, I simply enjoy the console more. So unfortunately that means for me.. waiting for a patch and paying for it on XBL.

Though for everything I said, I am gonna look into the bootcamp and crossover stuff.. no matter how much I enjoy consoles, when I only have my computer with me at school, it's not really a competition. X)

It's a Valve game so you should buy it on the PC if you can. I don't know how the 360 version plays.

Everything is inferior to PC versions... Natasha, sandvich, and I will make them cry some more for you!

Seriously though, I have faith that Valve has tried everything they could to get the updates to you guys, and for free. Valve loves all gamers. Well except those gamers who get their account hijacked it seems, but that is another can-o-worms.

I liked the console version, but the PC version comes with some cool little things you won't find on the xbox, like a lot of custom maps. Not sure about any mods though but seeing as Counterstrike has quite a few, I guess that TF2 will have some as well. But if you can't get it for the pc, for whatever reason, I found it really enjoyable for the 360 as well. Worth the purchase, for whatever platform.

I fell in love with the game on the 360, but I'm tired of not having all the perks the PC has (not to mention players!). Go ahead and get it!

My dear boy, it's a thing called bootcamp, and it comes with your copy of OSX 10.5. You'd be surprised at what a Intel 950 GMA can play. I mean, I can't play a ton of things, but I can play Hl2 and the OB, even if I do have to turn the shadow and lighting effects off.

Seriously, just boot camp your mac. TF2 is better on the PC.

I have both the 360 and pc versions of tf2 and aside from a few goes on the console when i first got it i havent even touched it since. I found the console version pathetic compared to pc.

I'd have to agree about trying to get it on the PC if humanly possible. The control system is a moot point as you can plug a gamepad in if you want, but there's just so much more content thanks to all the (free) DLC.
I can't imagine playing TF2 without the payload maps, the backburner, and the different tactical options provided by the kritzkrieg.

I ahve a couple clan mates that use trackballs for there PC fps, and they're still pretty damned awesome at CS:S (one of them especially!) Though if you mean trackpad as in touchmouse build into laptops, then seriously invest in a cheapo USB 3 button mouse from your nearest pound/dollar store.

Valve would rather give their updates for free but it's MS who force a charge for their stuff. It was supposedly the same with Epic. They wanted to give free game updates to the 360 version of UT3 but MS didn't like that.

is there anyone who doesn't play PC games and is enjoying the 360 version?
This is The Escapist, almost everyone here has a PC capable of playing TF2. So why on Earth would they buy it for 360?

Orange Box only costs $20 on 360 now, and I've been playing it consistently since about November. Well worth it in my opinion.

Why on bloody Earth would you want to get the console version?
The PC version has better maps, customs maps, more players, more servers, custom servers, faster loading times, better GUI and connectivity, (STEAM > XBL) better controls, customizable macros, better graphics, smoother framerate should I go on?
