living in today sinternet ruled world irony is no stranger from the movie 'birdemic' being called by fans ''the greatest movie ever'' to rebecca blacks weekday anthem 'friday' being one of the most downloaded songs on itunes its no suprise i somehow doubt that my little pony : friendship is magic really is recognized for its plot and characters especially with characters like 'twilight sprakle' and 'sweetie belle'

so to cut this short is 'my little pony realy a great show or just a jab at the show overall campiness

I enjoy the show, but I stick around for the community that it spawned.

It's primarily aimed at kids, namely little girls. Yes, it's campy to an extent, but it's also...intriguing. I thought it was some stupid internet meme or fad at first myself, but it's actually not that bad.

Pretty entertaining stuff, I'd suggest checking it out when you've got some spare time.

The only way to know for sure is to do what I did and just watch it. If you watch, say 4 episodes and it doesn't make you smile then you can safely ignore it.

Just start with episode 1 and keep going. Full episodes are on youtube.

yes its good, basically the show is good because the people making it care about it,they could have just phoned it in and created an extended toy commercial but instead they chose to make each story interesting and well written, the characters are lovable and relatable, the humer ranges from anywhere sophisticated(makes references to classic shows such as have gun will travel) to crude slapstick(think old style loony tunes anvil dropping out of nowhere), it advocates life lessons without being preachy, inspires intelligent discussions, makes a BUTTLOAD of references to classical Greek mythology(myths such as Icarus, and includes awesome monsters such as chimeras, hydras, and pretty bad ass dragons in some episodes)the music is very well done, and many more things make the show great.add to that the fan base is one of the most devoted and welcoming ones out there

i went in a bit ago not as a hater but as an objective indifferent researcher trying to figure out what made the show so damn interesting to people who would otherwise not have given it a look or would have gone to watch something else, slowly but surely was drawn in and by about the 3 or 5 ep i was hooked.

The MLP praise is such an epidemic because every rule of reason says that it SHOULD be an ironic thing. It is not. It is actually genuinely entertaining, and the thrill of genuinely enjoying something that logic says should only be enjoyed ironically is intoxicating.

Then its not for you. Just like Reality TV shows aren't for me.

But no, I don't like the show ironically. I like the show because it warms my black little heart and makes me laugh. :)

I caved and watched the first 3 episodes today, and in my opinion the answer to your question is... yeah... definitely one of those two options. I didn't hate it, despite being an adult male and as such the exact opposite of the target audience, and while I didn't find it as awe inspiring as I had been led to believe I did find myself laughing more often than expected. I think the turning point for me was when one of the ponies was being chased by a crowd and I realised the background music was an homage to the benny hill song.

So in summary, while I'm not about to switch my av to twilight sparkle and hanging out with the bronies, I might watch an episode every now and then as a guilty pleasure. Don't go into it expecting your life to change, but it's decent at worst.

The first 2 episodes are more serious and set the precedents for the characters. People will usually tell you to watch 4 episodes so you get passed the setup, and have a decent sampling of when the show gets episodic. Of course, not only do you not have to like any given show, you also don't have to give a real chance to every show that might be good, there's plenty of stuff to do in the world besides watching one specific show. I will point out, though, that there are some fantastic parodies out there that are much, much funnier once you understand the context.

I watch it because it's good, I recommend checking out, it does have Lauren Faust as the head writer, creator of Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Most of the internet fame of it thou is because of the irony.

Yes, it really is a great show. I don't know what it is about it that's so great, but it is great. It could be the humour, the fun characters, or my secret and very real desire to bang a unicorn, but it is a great show, and I recommend it to everyone.

I honestly think it's one of the best-written (and, of course, animated) kid's shows on tv. Other shows focus too much on formula, and, admitedly, MLP has that whole'friendship' stuff. But the show does so very well, and I think it focuses on adult problems as well, like the Applejack episode. I think a lot of grown adults find it very hard to accept help due to their own pride. Plus, the show is not a sugar-coated as people think it is. It has action, very clever jokes ("Wanna buy a sofa?"), and theres the animation, which is just superb. It's just a cute show that is more appealing to all audiences than it looks.

Well someone doesn't seem to have found the search bar yet...

In a sentence: Yes, it is good.

If you want a little more depth: Yes, it is good. The characters are surprisingly well made, the stories are quite good at worst, the writing is top notch save the occasional hiccup, the animation is very good too, and it's also something that should be supported on principle: Girls' cartoons have become a tepid mess of pleasantry, tea parties and sickeningly saccharine girly things, but Lauren Faust took a stand against the tides with Friendship is Magic and it's damn well paid off.

As it is, I don't see this thread surviving long, so for further discussion, either PM me or poke your nose into the Friendship is Magic Group [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/MLP-Friendship-is-Magic] and have all of your questions answered with a smile. Who knows, you might even watch it and enjoy it. This goes for anyone around.

I think people out there genuinely enjoy MLP. It's well-written/animated/voiced, homie us, and deeper than you might think. While I think that it is ironic that it's attracted a much wider audience than intended (twenty-something males who are not gay, for example), irony certainly isn't the reason why the craze started. It may not be the best show in the world, but it is very good considering it's premise.
