I think it's a bit of both. MLP is not that bad (granted, I only saw the first two episodes), and can be funny...but I think some people might like it just to be ironic as well.
I kinda agree. It's a good show, which is why we like it. But we make such a big deal about it because the name of the show is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I guarantee you if everyone ignored the previous generations of MLP, they changed the name, and this show premiered on Cartoon Network, not nearly as many people would care.

living in today sinternet ruled world irony is no stranger from the movie 'birdemic' being called by fans ''the greatest movie ever'' to rebecca blacks weekday anthem 'friday' being one of the most downloaded songs on itunes its no suprise i somehow doubt that my little pony : friendship is magic really is recognized for its plot and characters especially with characters like 'twilight sprakle' and 'sweetie belle'

so to cut this short is 'my little pony realy a great show or just a jab at the show overall campiness
It's honestly good. It's a lot like the better cartoons of the 90s, slipping in a good amount of adult humour and pop culture on top of the typical kid's cartoon. Nearly every moment that veers toward camp has some quick indication, a pained sigh, eye roll, or snide remark, that the creators are very aware of what they're doing.

I think a lot of the draw is that it's also the first such cartoon to be made by someone of a particular age bracket that intersects with a lot of internet forum-goers.

It's primarily aimed at kids, namely little girls. Yes, it's campy to an extent, but it's also...intriguing. I thought it was some stupid internet meme or fad at first myself, but it's actually not that bad.

Pretty entertaining stuff, I'd suggest checking it out when you've got some spare time.
NO! NO DON'T LISTEN! IT'S A LIE! THEY JUST WANT TO ASSIMILATE YOU INTO THE PONY COLLECTIVE!!!

*flees in horror*

...But in reality, it's rare for a show for kids to be really good. The first (few?) seasons of Sponge Bob are kinda like that too, but this is even bigger since it's a show primarily for little girls and yet it isn't promoting "get in the kitchen" mindsets as well as being...well...just fun in general!

I enjoy it, but I can't really explain why. It's just one of those kids' shows that's really for everyone, like The Last Airbender and Phineas & Ferb.

The only way to know for sure is to do what I did and just watch it. If you watch, say 4 episodes and it doesn't make you smile then you can safely ignore it.

Just start with episode 1 and keep going. Full episodes are on youtube.
i tried watching an episode but i really ..really couldnt finish

EDIT: I fucked up that quote heavenly
Add one [ at the beginning and you're golden.

Guys, you're wasting your time, the OP is obviously "too cool" to actually enjoy the show, so he/she is not even willing to give it a try. I've been reading his/her replies and all they've done is take one look at it with a closed mind.

Seriously man, I don't know who you're trying to impress but if you're not going to give things an honest chance then why bother asking in the first place? It's fine if you don't like it, but it seems you're just being negative about it offhand for reasons only known to yourself.

Yeah it's pretty good if you want to forget you have mountains of work to do on your desk. Because of that show, I managed to learn I could close YouTube, open up the escapist and start watching a ZP or read o thread in 5 seconds as my brother walked in.

If you're sceptical to the internet's word, then why are you asking us?

Go watch the show. I personally enjoy it a lot.

no offence but i'd rather do jello shots from jim belushi's navel in my spare time..
i kinda feel the same way, ive seen people make that "good writing" argument and stuff before but i cant even get to a point where i would sit and watch a cartoon for kids.

i guess it does appeal to 20something people that can make this step

"some guy on the internet told me to watch a cartoon aimed at little girls, maybe i should" just doesnt compute in my brain

could someone type out some of this good writing or good jokes? maybe works better without the anime looking horses in fluo colours

Wonderfully open minded, aren't you? You should really give it a try, it's quite good.

I don't think anyone is actually going to type out scenes from the show and post them just to convince some random person on the internet to give it a try (though I could be wrong). Frankly, if watching a show you've heard many, many, people claim is good doesn't "compute" in your brain then don't bother. At the end of the day it is only you who is missing out.

Note this applies to everyone looking for further confirmation before trying it. Trying the show isn't going to make your penis fall off, just give it a go and you'll know exactly what it's like and if it's for you. If it isn't then fine, you've lost nothing.

One of the directors and storyboard writers for Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends is the creative lead behind it.

So yeah, [better than expected].

@ the OP: Trust me, the show is actually pretty good.

If you want to know if you'll like it or not, jump straight to episode 4 (the apple season one) and watch it all the way through. If you can't stand that one, then the show is not for you. If you liked it, then you'll probably like the show.

It's like Firefly for 12-year-old girls (in terms of dialogue, humour, characterisation).

Here's a great 1-minute scene that sums it all up nicely, I think:
(Background: One of the characters put on a fashion show which failed and made her look stupid, and the others come to (sort of) comfort her)
